I don't know how this thread is just ignoring the explosion of Keanu memes caused by this announcement. Keanu is basically the new Chuck Norris

I'm deducting one point for the 1995 picture not being from Johnny Mnemonic.

Just because YOU have worked in the 'field' doesn't mean you know how all studios operate.
FYI this was your mistake. You could have just stated your opinion without trying to shoot his down. I guarantee that if you hadn't led with this, you wouldn't be getting this kind of pushback. Of course the response was a bit over the top - bog-standard escalation cycle.

It's been building for a while! The guy has such a great reputation as a human being that it doesn't matter if he's not the greatest, ahem, actor. I think filmmakers must sometimes cast movies based on who they want to work with for the next six months to year of their life.

There's two things in the 45 minute gameplay video I'm not happy about, however...Boss fights.
The guy with the machinegun that you overcome by going around and distract him so Jackie can drop him.
The gangleader that has the shield generator in his exoskeleton you have to blow before you can finish him.
I hope there are more ways to finish those fights than...
Realize anything you do is ineffective ->Discover the scripted Weak Point Strategy->Utilize the Weak Point Strategy to win.

I agree, but unfortunately, that's most videogames by a wide margin. At best they will have 2-4 weak points designed for different build types, and everyone will praise them for non-linearity.

Which is why TTRPGs remain singular and unopposed!!!

Until we get actual AI=run games. Which I expect to come right after the sex robots and immediately before the Robopocalypse

There are exceptions like the STALKER series where each entity in the world is a simulated life with behaviours, needs, etc and autonomously pursue that (something no tabletop GM in the world could realistically replicate) but overall you're right, most videogames are very limited in this regard.

Interestingly, the electronic RPG genre is among the least developed in this field. Tactics, Strategy, Sim, etc. genres are usually more open and present better AI than it. I wonder if the storytelling aspect RPGs isn't a factor here. Probably is.

The Robopocalypse will be triggered when an AI GM has a session utterly ruined for everyone by one trolling player who then says, "But I was just playing my character!"

Good point. Crusader Kings II is a better RPG than any actual CRPG I have played.

As long as it's pretty to look at, I don't give a flip about linearity or find the one way to beat boss.
I can relate to that. I understand the Krueger's frustrations about the limitations of CRPGs, but their strength is that sensation of really being able to walk around inside them and look at the scenery.

All hail our new machine overlords. Seriously, I don't see how they can fuck it up any more than... oops, nearly got political

And that was a demo, nothing says they need to include boss fights like that. Maybe it makes sense in certain contexts. Maybe it’s just the one. Who knows, too early.

It's clever casting him as Johnny Silverhand. You don't need to sell players on the idea that Johnny Silverhand is some big deal celebrity when just having Keanu there is going to do all the heavy lifting for you.

Well remembered! CK2 is one of the most addicting and pure fun games I've ever played. Also: King of Dragon Pass and Alpha Centauri.

I remember this time in Alpha Centauri when I was trying to negotiate an alliance with a neighbour but she always refused. When we were on the verge of war, my FISSION PLANET BUSTER project completed. The next turn she calls me on the comms and say "Ok, let's talk". It was one of the most humanly reaction I've seen from an AI.

(Sister Miriam is a bitch, by the way)

Well, CP2077 is going to have two main challenges as a CRPG.

1. It has to do a good job of representing RTG’s Cyberpunk world.
2. It has to meet or surpass the Deus Ex series as a Cyberpunk CRPG.

I can turn the brain off and FPS it with tons of titles, but I expect more from a CRPG. These are the Witcher guys, after all.

Anthem’s proved once and for all that Bioware’s dead, Bethesda shit the bed with Fallout ‘76...there’s really no reason you couldn’t have a good RPG underneath AAA graphics.

I'm guessing the art direction will be significantly improved, while the rules will be based on Interlock, not Fuzion. I'm hopeful, myself.

Probably take a look at The Witcher RPG. The rules will probably be a copypasta of that.

The whole thing of Pondsmith saying the rules would be Interlock instead of Fuzion never filled me with confidence. He had stated in the past on the Mekton mailing list that he didn't see any difference between Interlock and Fuzion. In his mind they were exactly the same.

Fuzion isn't really bad. I'm not sure what I'd call it. But I think the Heroization of Interlock didn't feel right to Interlock fans and the Interlockization of Hero was immediately dismissed and ignored by Hero fans. Fuzion needs something. Better editing, less floaty content (just about every version of Fuzion has a very vague skill list)...

But one thing I've definitely come to realize is that Pondsmith is not a rules guy. Any of the detailed mechanical bits of R Tal games come from other writers. I'd say Ianus Games had a better handle on the mechanics of Mekton II than RTal products did, for example.

I'm aware of the STALKER games by reputation - games like that are truly innovative and extremely hard to make, but truly worthy of praise. Minecraft, Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress...stuff like that (and STALKER I presume).

i feel like this is common in the industry, as it seems there are folks who are good at story and folks who are good at rules/math, and it is very hard to get both.

He must have some aging secrets, as wouldn't Silverhand be like, nearly 80 if he was in his early 20s during 2020. (Then again it is Keanu, dude doesn't age).

It's the curse of working in a "fun" business. If you aren't willing to work insane hours or work for free, there will be plenty of other people eager to replace you.
[ . . . ]
That's a primary reason I work on data integration jobs in the City. It's unglamourous, difficult to do well and has a chicken-and-agg problem to get involved in to begin with. End result: persistent skill shortage and good contract rates. If you're going to work with arseholes make sure the arseholes need you more than you need them. I wouldn't work for a video game company for all the tea in China.

I only learned of the game last year, I don't even know the differenced between the 5th edition iterations haha
For Pendragon 5.0 to 5.1 grappling is fixed, damage can be dealt to multiple foes in one round, some weapon stats corrected, clearer rules on when you need chirguery and how passion states are resolved, restrictions on glory to prevent explosive growth from land holdings, "famous" qualities give glory.

5.2 is mostly an art and layout change with spelling errors corrected. Pious is reworded to Spiritual to fit with Pagan characters and the land earnings system follows later supplements like Book of the Estate to make book keeping easier.

But isn't that it? I mean, its actually Bernard Cornwell Winter King setting, but everything else is there - Arthur and his vassals, with their virtues, passions and all.

The only question is: RPGPub CK2 Multiplayer when? :hehe:
Bernard Cornwell is on the more realistic side of Arthurian legend. Pendragon is actually complicated in that respect as it starts closer to Cornwell during its earlier period, but once Arthur takes the throne, it becomes both more fantastical and anachronistic.

Oh I know that. But the essentials are there for good multiplayer: saxons to kill, lands to grab and neighbours wives to covet! :hehe:

He appears to glitch when he shows up, suggesting he's not around physically or someone is using his image to manipulate you.
