What are y'all up to these days?

I own the Lucha Loco book. Bought it in Oaxaca two years ago. During the same vacation we visited Tulancingo, Hidalgo, birthplace of El Santo and home to a very small Santo museum and a Santo statue. I posted pics of this on the Pub at the time.

We also own three Santo DVDs, Santo contra las mujeres vampiro (1962), Santo contra los zombies (1961) and Santo y Blue Demon contra los monstruos (1970). Mujeres vampiro has been described as a masterpiece of surrealist cinema and I would rank it as the quintessential Santo movie.

The best Luchador film I've ever seen is Champions of Justice, perhaps the greatest film ever made?

I actually own that on DVD. El Santo had a bigger film career, but this Blue Demon film had so many big names from Lucha Libre at the time. That fight with the minis is pretty cool.

Yeah I own it as well. It is much loved.

You don't own a copy of Santo y Blue Demon contra Drácula y el Hombre Lobo? I know you have seen it!

I saw it on TV, in Mexico.

Funny enough, it's actually quite hard to find DVDs of old luchador films over there. Lately we haven't found any in Mexico City... Seems like it has become a kind of nostalgic campy/cult thing, not something a mainstream younger audience is still interested in. You can often see old luchador movies broadcasted on TV, though, together with other Mexican-produced Hammer-like horror and crime cinema that used to be popular.

Working up notes for a Merc game on Saturday, wherein the PCs* will be invading by sea, at night, the fictional Caribbean island nation of Santo Refugio, for which I am using Grenada as a model. Thus I'm looking up maps and information about the invasion of '83, although the game is tenuously set sometime in the '70s. (Fun fact: the date of the invasion is now Grenada's Thanksgiving Day.)

* and associates, treated essentially like henchmen, as we don't have enough players for an effective fighting force and I didn't want to have players running multiple PCs.

That has a very Father Ted feel to it. Instead of Priests wandering around always dressed as Priests, you have wrestlers who never take off their costumes.

Creepy, but I like the idea.

They do don a proper suit with the mask, though. They're not walking around in fighting costume all the time. This makes them way more stylish and tasteful than a lot of "ordinary" superheroes.

And actually, IIRC priests wander around dressed as priests ofttimes in luchador films as well.

Whew! Just finished cleaning up after having the group over to play the Dinosaur Island boardgame. Lotta resource management mechanics to play with and a whole lot of dinosaur meeples. I heartily enjoyed the game.

On a happy sidenote I was able to figure out who was swapping books from my RPG library and the end result is it looks like I'll be starting a new chronicle with a new group for the summer. This is the first chance I've gotten to try out the Shattered Dreams book with the Gurps Ice Age book thats been on my shelf for ten years.

Still reporting my RQG sessions on my blog.
Somehow this last week I ended up reading more about Glorantha than studying.
Also played some 1999 King of Dragon Pass, I found that this game is a time travel machine. I sat on the computer with the sun shining outside and after "five minutes" I looked again and it was dark.
I have realized that I'm getting burned from running 2 published scenarios one after the other, and want to get back to my scenarios before diving further on the last one on the GM adventures booklet. I also got burnt from playing 4 weekends straight, life is claiming It's price on it, gotta manage time better.

I know the feeling, though it was a different edition...

My personal project for today: pancakes with honey and cheese, dealing with taxes, and visiting a seminar on Ba Ji Quan.

Well, unlike superheroes they don't lead dual lives. If you're Santo or Blue Demon, you're Santo or Blue Demon all day, every day.

I think I'm going to give in to my urge to try running Lucha Libre Hero. I have a scenario in mind already. To keep things simple, since no one is especially up on Hero System, the players are going to give me brief descriptions of their respective luchadores and gimmicks, which I'll translate into Hero to the best of my ability. I'm not going to do the math because (1) it's a pain the ass to me and (2) I never did understand the obsession that everything must balance perfectly. I'll just eyeball it to make sure everyone seems about equally talented and has a unique move (read: power) so they don't all seem the same. I have my neat little plastic luchador dolls we can use as miniatures if necessary, plus my kids have a lot of Scooby-Doo monsters (mummy, withdoctor, electrical beast, Black Lagoon-type creature, etc.) as well, although I could really use a vampire and a werewolf if the game lasts as more than a one-time event. Anyway, my initial premise is that the PCs will be técnicos on a package tour through Mexico (along with some rudos, of course) and stopping off in Guanajuato to put on some bouts. For those who don't know, Guanajuato is well known for its mummies. I remember seeing them; they can be disturbing sights if you are expecting the Egyptian type. Anyway, simultaneous with the técnicos being in town, their old friend Profesor Saavedra will be on an anthropological/archaeological dig in the area (there are many sites there). His beautiful daughter is in tow, too, or it wouldn't be in genre. Anyway, some colleague will go missing and the authorities will be scoffing and useless, then when the daughter disappears the profesor will send word, probably by some urchin I can endanger later, to the técnicos that he desperately needs their aid and fears supernatural danger, etc. Obviously the profesor's bumbling manual laborers have disturbed the resting place of a powerful and evil mummy who hates all living things but also craves an undead bride. He'll mesmerize the laborers into doing his bidding to collect what he needs to perform his wicked ritual, and so on. He'll probably also need to enlist the rudos as his unwitting footsoldiers--maybe he can disguise himself as a charming nobleman and promise them riches to serve as his bodyguards. I'd like to fit blond Martians in there but I'm not sure how and I don't want to use too many enemies at once in case we play again. Maybe a fugitive Nazi mad scientist is involved. Am I borrowing a bit from the Santo-Blue Demon-Mil Máscaras classic Las momias de Guanajuato plus La venganza de la momia? Or El robo de las momias de Guanajuato and El castillo de las momias de Guanajuato?

Probably, but only from vague memories as I haven't seen them in at least a decade and they all blur together in my mind. But none of the players have seen them at all, therefore any ideas I rip off will pass for my own brilliance! :hehe:

Since payday is this week, I am probably going to pick up a copy of LL Hero. I saw a copy at a really good price on ebay, so I hope to try and get it (if it's still there in a few days)

There's a Drivethru sale on Goodman 3e stuff so I just bought Castle Whiterock for £3.92. I might run it using the DCC rpg or maybe Old-School Essentials.

I just took the plunge and ordered a dead tree copy of OSRIC. More news once it gets here.

Okay, that happened. I was just handed a book entitled Tails of Equestria The Storytelling Game and asked if I might run a game Saturday evening. I'll read it before making up my mind.
Let us know how it goes.

Let me guess: your SO handed it to you?

Not for me. My wife doesn't go in game stores anymore than I shop for kids clothes.
You'd almost think that our wives might be different people, right:grin:?

Nah, that's nonsense. They both married gamers, right:tongue:?

We have our spheres that overlap and our spheres that don't. With little kids who have so far shown little interest in what they where she still has little dolls she can dress up. I'm happy for her. I have my hobby she has hers. I'm going to be sad for her when the kids start having opinions on what they want to wear

The Ex Convento del Carmen in Mexico City also has a couple of mummies, but Guanajuato is definitely more impressive.

You must be from a different universe. My wife always wants to go to game stores with me, we don't have kids and we both dislike shopping for clothes.

My wife plays games but leaves the looking for them to me. She has complete control over how the kids look which suits us both just fine. I've offered to help but she has her vision for how things should be and I don't see it properly so I need to get out of the way.

Dealing with first world problems of the highest order. Sometimes choice is it's own worst enemy.

Living Steel, then?
swimming clubs. I realize it's possible to recognize potential Olympic level swimmers at a young age but designing a community club prioritizing finding and training the to the exclusion of other members in the under 8 division seems to be an odd choice. So I switched to the less competative team coached by the multiple medal winning Olympic swimmer.

In other words people aspire to be more bad ass than they are. Bad ass people inspire you to be more by mixing fun with competition. I

OK, they do act the same in many regards:grin:!

I'm a stay at home dad. There's three types of moms regarding childrens clothes as I see it. 1) I encourage them to express themselves. 2) I encourage them to do any task that successfully takes it off my list. 3) I encourage them to put on whatever I put out for them potentially including using a carrot or stick to get agreement.

Meet La Sombra de la Luna, our first luchador PC. This is my attempt to illustrate the description I was provided. Lucha Libre Hero is tentatively set for July 6th but I'm willing to bet someone will cancel due to the proximity to the 4th of July.
