Broken

History:
Sammi McCain was not always a nihilistic broken woman. But the loss of everything she ever loved not once, but twice will change people. Although her mother's race is blessed with an innate understanding of general technological principles, giving them an edge in reaching space. However, being humanoid, but not to the Ultimian standards, they were discovered and hunted to near extinction. The survivors fled to a small, backwater and unimportant planet at the far edge of the arm of the Galaxy, where they hid and merged with the population. A lot of them had children, and Sammi is one of them, and due to her genes, she was blessed with both a high intelligence and ability to 'talk' with machines.

However, being cautioned to not use her powers all her out of fear of being discovered -Despite humanity having known and experienced super powered post-humans since 1984- she always made sure that any sort of breakthrough was either done in a group or a fortuitous 'accident'. While working for Vector-Dyne, a technologically advanced corporation with arms in just about everything from vehicles to personal electronics, she fell in love with a Victor Hines, the amazingly young director of R&D and her boss. Freely and willing to give up everything for him, she became his partner in all things. For him, he knew of her gifts and subtly got her to foster them and build trust in humanity.

Then Paragon went insane. In wars, most human armies target technological and manufacturing centers and communication hubs. But when you're so powerful that most weapons don't harm you, and you want to murder, you simply ignore those and attack centers of mass population. Sammi was at work at a remote lab, having both her children with her at the time, due to scheduling conflicts with her husband's family and that saved them. Her man's private plane was disintegrated on live television in mid-air while Pittsburg was reduced to a cinder in minutes shortly after.

Now a single mother with twins, she began using her powers more overtly, to help both discover what made Paragon insane and to prepare against another incident of the same magnitude, not to mention feed her family. And although she succeeded on the latter, she wasn't in time to save her 9 year old boys nor her side of the family who moved to San Francisco, renamed to Bay City after the Paragon Incident. The Ultimians, her mother's greatest fear, implanted by her own mother (And Sammi's gram) came and began to decimate earth not only for harbouring various fugitive humanoid aliens that their purity crusade deemed unworthy of existence, but because Humans had also failed it and must be destroyed.

Although Bay City escaped mostly unscathed, a lot of the suburbs did not. And Grandma McCain and Timothy and Thomas were among the millions dead. That was enough for Samantha, everything she had and cared for, gone and she could do nothing. Now, she no longer cares. If people want her, they can pay for her. Anything, her powers, skills, gadgets, all for sale, because in the end, what does it matter?

Notes:
Her favourite devices are a pair of X-Ray goggles and a hover-board she made for her boys, as a way to try and feel something more than dead inside. Lately, she's taken to thrill seeking. Her costume has an amazing array of tools.

Once again, sorry for the wait. More RL crap. But I have been think about the backgrounds while away. Both of them are excellent. I can tell both entries took allot of thought and work. It was really hard to come up with a definitive winner. But in the end, I felt Picaroon Jack's entry fit the 'mood' of the image a little better. I know that's incredible subjective but I felt it was a notable difference that offered a hair's breadth difference in the two origin's standing the competition. Congratulations, Picaroon Jack!

It anyone is curious, here is the character: Y.T.''s original sheet.

Ashley Greer, high school honor student, operates as a vigilante in New Sodom. When she first donned her new gear and saved a young couple from a group of gangsters, the obvious question was asked:

“Who are you?” they asked.

She really didn’t have an idea of a superhero name. In truth, she was looking to test out some radically new gear she made from bodging together some heretofore alien technology with her thrashing gear. She thought it would make for an extreme ride she could sell to others (of course she had no way to replicate the power source).

That night, she became so much more.

“Yours Truly,” she said. “Call me YT.”

While her “super plank” (a revved up skateboard) and thrasher suit give her all her powers, her reflexes and agility are all her own. Why she’s this way she has no idea, and doesn’t really have any idea of figuring out how.

While she does, she’ll continue being a hero, leaving tangled up badguys with a little note attached…

“Compliments of Yours Truly.”

American Outlaw

like most Texan's elder Simmons' man was an avid gun nut, teaching his grandson not only how to fire, but to care for and be safe around.
1. Political stereotype of Texans
2. “Gun Nut” is a politically charged term.
3. Someone who teaches their children firearm safety is not a “Gun Nut”. “Gun Nuts” are the guys who show their 90lb girlfriends shooting a .50 cal pistol that recoils so hard it hits them in the face, “Bubbas” who modify pistols to carry loads capable of killing T-Rexes (or themselves) and other such idiocies.

Other than that, great write-up.

Neither did I and I am not Canadian. Don't worry about it, lets just move on.
Nice Job on Haywire.
I will agree with your assessment, looking it over my submission, it feels a little weak.

Its not weak, I rather like it but didn't feel as "four color" as that picture exuded to me. That's really it. I'd readily use the character in a game.

Qualities:

Master of Wind, Ice and Water

History:
Most origin stories happen because of a crisis, a life or death situation, either for yourself of those you love. It's a common story for most heroes and villains, so a lot of foolish young people that decide they want to be super powerful and have more money than sense, throw what are called 'spark parties', to 'spark' the supposed latent gene that no one has ever found, into activating. The worst of these affairs are of course, incredibly illegal and dangerous and often end in tragic deaths. But more often than not they're marked with heavy drinking and drug abuse.

Jamal Stone has always been a slacker at heart, he did OK in school, was a good B grade student but he never really did much outside of his little box. Still he did his little rebellions, to make try and break out. Sometimes it led him to bad places, like shoplifting at 15, others like smoking weed, was a fun diversion.

So when a friend of his invited him to a Spark Party a rich college student was throwing, he decided to go on a whim. Expecting to get blasted out of his mind, get drunk, maybe score with the hostess, things started getting weird as things started to get a little breezier around him, literally. Thinking it was the drugs (never did find out what those were) he started making liquor 'sculptures' in his mug. Most of the other party goers who noticed this thought it was a group hallucination, but didn't seem to clue in either.

When a pretty party goer decided that she was going to try and get some powers by throwing herself off the edge of the penthouse, that's what jolted him into action. Goaded by all the drunk and drugged out of their mind kids, she hopped into the night sky. Jamal knew this was going to end badly. Not sure how, but he knew. So with a strength of action he didn't know was in him, he rush to the side and reached out to catch her.

And every single source of liquid responded. Faucets exploded, tubs emptied, the pool, all the beer and wine and alcohol snaked out and shaped in a pair of ginormous hands caught, slowed and then carried the shivering, frightened twenty something girl back onto the rooftop. Shortly after the cheering stop, the police came and arrested everyone. Jamal himself didn't resist and gave his side of the story, even showing them his new powers and excellent control of them.

While the Detroit police, debated what to do with him, as frankly, the worst they could pin on him was possession and he did save the victim, a well known corporate philanthropist, William Albert Jensen of Ace Industries, came to his rescue, offering a job as part of 'Alpha Team', a registered group of heroes. Using his political pull, he managed to get the new Post-Human into the fold. His drifting University career now over, Jamal begins on Monday. He took the name Chilblains because it sounded cool.

Notes:
Due to his random drug use, he looks a bit older than he seems. Also, evidence suggests that his powers had been slowly manifesting for years, without his knowledge, due to having a Vux'an Grandfather, a now known alien race of that fled the Ultimians back in the late 1940's.

I'm going to bow to Christopher Brady again on this one or anyone else that want to step up.

I am having the worst writers block right now. I get the seed of an idea and it fizzles. Frustrating as Hell. I need some creative Viagra or something. But I didn't want to hold up the thread. Your background was great.

Specialties:
Science
Performance: Dance

Qualities:
Unstoppable
Smarter Than She Looks
It's a Fragile World

History:
Tiffany Winters was a thoughtful, quiet, observant child, watching her perpetually single mother bouncing from science posting to posting and learned of the world from her. And like mommy, she grew up resenting the men around her for real and imagined slights.

Her mother taught her that she could do anything, so when she wasn't good enough for a sports team? It wasn't her, it was the boys around her. It wasn't because she was a petite cutie who struggled getting things from a high shelf at the best of times. Every time she couldn't do something, mommy was right, it wasn't her, it was them.

And like her mother, she had a talent for chemistry and excelled getting a posting at the very same company Mommy started at: Vector-Dyne. However, despite their public veneer of respectability, Tiffany quickly found out that they are as big a group of IP thieves that Mommy said they were. But unlike Mommy, she was not going to take it lying down.

So putting the finishing touches on an enhancement formula, the tiny woman decided that she would be it's test subject. The pain was incredible, almost unbearable. She grew in mass, strength and density, wrecking everything in the process. When it was over, the lab was in ruins, demolished.

Taller, muscular, strong, she felt she could anything! Looking back at the rubble, she smirked, served them right. She ignored the bullets as they flattened on her skin from the feckless security goons. She batted them all out of her way. Now, she could do anything, take what was meant to be hers. And now, after getting an appropriately flashy costume, she will!

Crystal Berman

Terra

Background: Crystal grew up different. She started feeling the earth beneath her feet when she was six. Luckily her parents thought it was just a six year olds imagination. As she grew older the feeling grew stronger. At twelve the earth would move as she wished. Crystal kept all of this to herself though both her brother and sister knew. With two siblings in a too small house it was hard to keep anything a secret. At sixteen Crystal was hit by a drunk driver while crossing the street. She didn’t move an in but the car crumpled as if it ran into a tree. After that her life changed.

Knowing that you couldn’t get hurt took all the fear out of things. Crystal started small, putting on a mask and robbing gas stations. The rush was more than she could handle at that age. Crystal kept up her school work and apparent normal life. The day before her graduation ceremony Crystal robbed a small bank. That day was the last day her friends and family saw her. From there it was a life on the road. Constantly moving, stealing cars, and taking what she wanted.
Crystal was good at it too. For nearly eight years she enjoyed the bliss of the life of crime. Then everything changed. It was a normal bank robbery in Baltimore. She took a bunch of money and the cops showed up. Unconcerned with bullets she walked out of the bank. They threatened to shoot and Crystal made the ground tremble and shake. She felt it first and that second was the longest moment in her life. A rumbling underground that make the ground shake even worse. An explosion of fire and earth happened next taking out half a city block. Crystal was the only one to survive. Bags of burnt money were left behind the gas main explosion along with victims and her criminal life.

Awash in guilt, Crystal has made an effort to make amends for her careless use of her gifts, taking the name Terra and donning a more heroic costume, Crystal fights against those she might have worked with before, trying to earn some forgiveness from the public and from her conscious.

Powers and abilities: Crystal has the durability and the endurance of the earth itself. The earth also obeys her wishes. Shaping and moving as her will demands even created animate creatures of earth and rock. Crystal also has a bond with the earth, keeping her standing firmly when other forces might move her back. Some even say her beauty is so great that has to be the result of other forces, an Earth goddess reborn.

Building this in Supers! Revised:

Caleb spent several years applying his atomic physics knowledge to carbon fabrication. The hope was to create a material strong enough to build a beanstalk.

Budget cuts meant that Caleb and his research was going to shut down at the end of the week. Desperate for a breakthru, Caleb worked three days straight, till a lab accident resulted in the creation of an unique fabric, which seemed to function as a portal to another dimension. Caleb immediately saw the potential of using the strange creatures that poured through to his own advantage.

Now calling himself Importer, he would take the money he needed for his research and one day he'll figure out how to create more of the dimensional cloth.

I'm not familiar with the system, but I like the background. I hope there's more as good ones before the (ostensible) deadline. If anyone needs more time, let me know.

Qualities:
Jumped up Normal
Addiction to Power
The Theatrical Thespian

History
:
Quintin Bloom was a nobody with a nothing life and no prospects of getting better. And he hated it. He hated that everything seemed to conspire to keep him in this stuffy little box, no matter how hard he tried. Or so he told himself. In reality, he was a coward and gave up way too easily. His family life is dull, mostly normal, two parent home, an older brother, nothing really standing out other then getting the nickname 'Squinty' from classmates and workmates about his naturally light sensitive eyes.

His one true love was art of the thespian, although he wasn't ever going to be the main lead -too short and not good looking enough- he was fine with being a 'character actor'. After all, every time his boss came around to yell at him for not 'doing his job' despite being one of the best accountants in the firm, the smile and nod he did was purely to refine his craft. After all, no one need know the dark thoughts and imaginary deeds that lurked behind those dead, defeated eyes of a man who knew everyone was always laughing at him. He caught them sometimes!

Things began changing when he found that odd cloak. It wasn't there last Friday, and no one knew who brought it. In fact, people were looking for missing props, as it appeared that the old theatre had a break in the night before. So he claimed it for himself, and no one argued. At first it was a lark, an old style operatic cloak he wore everywhere. But when he started getting free coffee, by 'convincing' the local barista that he had paid when he hadn't -it even worked on anyone who had been watching him- 'Squinty' realized he had something, something special.

The Cloak was Magic! It could mentally control others, and that was now his ticket out of this hellhole of a life! A few more test runs proved his 'theory', and found that it worked best when he tried fear. His self-named Phantasmal Cloak was amazing! Emboldened, he began to take risks with his new gifts and began his new life as the Fearmonger!

Notes
:
The cloak is not magic, there's no such thing. It's an old Vector-Dyne project for the CIA MKULTRA program that was determined too dangerous to use. It's a psychic amplifier, allowing normal people to gain mental
abilities based on their psyche and personality, unfortunately, it also had a tendency of driving its users utterly mad. But never a company to destroy a potentially useful device, it was stored in a secret Vault. Someone yahoo in security got 'inspired' to stitch the circuitry into an operatic cloak before trying to escape with it. The thief got caught, but without the goods. Now V-D is looking for it's property back and is willing to do anything to get it.

Both entries look good, nice Halloween appropriate mood to them. I'll give things a couple more days to see if anyone else has an idea then make the decision.

I honestly had no intention on making mine appropriate for the season. I saw a cloak of monster and thought... Psychic!

I was thinking of writing a character, too. But I didn't think of anything that l would fit that picture better than the Importer...so what would be the point?

I'm going to go with Importer by a close, close margin.

Ortrail, you're up.

Thanks, it felt like it was a coin flip between Chris and myself.

Okay, let's go to Heromachine dot com and throw together a quick image.
