I adore your take on some of these monsters. Though I worry about the Thri-kreen's balance.

I know what you mean, he seems like he could use an extra pair of back legs, but in this case I iterallky just drew a praying antis, and apparently they manage with just the 2

Having flashbacks to the aunts from Kubo and the Two Strings with this piece!

That's funny, my fiance said almost the same thing, comparing it to Kubo's "Aunts". I was thinking of No-Face from Spirited Away when I did it, and the creepy baby-head mask things from Brazil.

DOODLING D&D - THE FINALE

ZOMBIE

Wow, hard to believe I've already reached the end of this artistic journey. Seemed so far off when I started. I'm a little disappointed that the last monster in the Monstrous Manual happens to be one of my least favourite monsters overall. I find Zombies incredibly boring,. I get the communist/socialist metaphor, the "people are the real monsters" plots, etc., but in the end I just prefer either a much more human or much more alien monster.

As such I struggled a bit with my aqpproach on this one. I have a notebook full of several half-finished corpses. I tried "pirate zombie","sexy zombie", "scary clown zombie", but just couldn't get into it. So I decided to do a Skaven zombie, because at the very least I always enjoy drawing a rat.

I understand the feeling. Zombies have the title of "AsenRG's least favourite monster", too:thumbsup:.

When I was running a game a lot like D&D I'd put more dragons in my adventures than I'd put zombies, and since dragons are outside the expected "enemy range" for said game*, you can draw the conclusions...

*They were used as plot devices, basically.

And now I'm just waiting for someone to run a game of The Witcher RPG using your artwork for the enemies:devil:!

What type of pencil do you use for your initial sketches?

Have you considered selling groups of these as stock art packs on DriveThruRPG?

Just Bic mechanical pencils.

I'd originally planned (plan) on putting all of these into a pdf and including a limited license for reproduction and selling that as a product for folks looking for cheap fantasy art for their RPGs or whatnot, but since finishing I've been consumed with schoolwork for the new term so haven't made any movement on that.

So, Finals are over, summer is starting, and I am about to continue with my Doodling D&D project with...

Doodling D&D II: Doodling Dieties & Demigods

Unfortunately, the first thing I have to do is repair my scanner, which the Covid stuff has made a bit more difficult than it should be.

But, I've gotten an instagram, finally, where I am slowly uploading my work this far..

And I'm tentativelly ready to take on a few commisions, to which end i did up a rate sheet:

Now, the main thing I'm looking into is getting the original set of illustrations up on Drive-Thru.

I’ve read that taking pictures with a camera is a good alternative to scanning. Have you ever tried that? I used to scan my drawings and never tried photographing them.

Yeah, that's what I used to do

You can see the difference here...

It's OK, but loses a lot of detail (even in the low-res version). But it may be my best option for the time being.

I've already started with my Deities & Demigods doodles last night, beginning with the Native American mythos. For as many liberties as I took with the Monstrous Manual, in this case my stuff is going to be nothing like the original illustrations - going more for a Wayne Barlowe's Inferno meets Folk Horror vibe

DOODLING D&D II:
DOODLING DIETIES & DEMIGODS

Got the first half dozen pics scanned in, so here we goes again.

I'm using the first edition, first printing Dieties & Demigods this time, and we're starting with the "American Indian Mythos", which seems to actually be Najavo mythos specifically, though many Gods were common to numerous tribes. I had no intention of trying to copy Native American designs, so instead I've gone for more of a Folk Horror presentation, inspired by ceremonial garb, a bit of influence from Kingdom Death, and works like Goat's Hide from the Sun

So, without further ado...
