I'm now 4 episodes in on GoT. The first two episodes didn't grab me, and I almost decided to stop there. The next two were better, and I loved how the 4th one ended. I will likely get in one more episode before I need to go out. I might watch more when I get back, though I've been eyeing some Bollywood movies on Amazon I might watch instead

The original King Kong.

Rob

I remember being pretty shocked watching that as a kid and seeing KK stomp on the island natives and then the later scenes between him and Fay Wray are definitely uncomfortably erotic. A great film, although I am still fond of the 70s remake too.

Watched The Muppet Christmas Carol on Disney+. The funny thing is how well it all works with Michael Caine playing it so straight and the ghosts of Christmas (especially the ghost of Christmas future) being so vivid and dead-on.

After that we watched The Black Cauldron and while no patch on the excellent books on its own it is pleasant enough.

I'm a fan of every filmed version of A Christmas Carol that I've seen, as well as the two stage versions I've seen, but The Muppet Christmas Carol is my favorite of all of them. Oddly, I don't think I've ever actually read the book, although I do own it.

Since I'm going to be running Tatooine Manhunt for my "Star Wars '78" game soon, I'm making some time to watch the Tatooine bits of Star Wars and Return of the Jedi (original theatrical versions, of course) to reacquaint myself with D̶e̶a̶t̶h̶ V̶a̶l̶l̶e̶y̶ Tatooine and R̶i̶c̶k̶'̶s̶ ̶C̶a̶f̶é̶ ̶A̶m̶é̶r̶i̶c̶a̶i̶n̶ the Mos Eisley Cantina.

I'll probably take a look at the novels as well just to steal some descriptors.

Of course it is now hopelessly non-canon (or at least rather squicky) since Luke and Leia were revealed to be siblings, but Splinter in the Minds Eye has some great ideas for running a game in a backwater of the empire. Really wish they would revisit and amend the story for a movie.

Enjoyed both very much: recommended.

Still watching GoT S1, but also checked out War, a hindi action film on Amazon. It only came out in October, so being on Amazon so soon is pretty cool. Great action scenes, especially when Tiger Schroff gets to fight (Schroff is a legit martial artist, which helps. Dude is HK level imho, and I hope he gets to do some stuff in HK and the US too, because he'd go over well. I'm also dying to see him go at it onscreen with Tony Jaa, as I think they'd make a great pairing). I'm also watching an older film called Ek Tha Tiger starring Salmon Khan. Took a break from that to start watching Zombieland: Double Tap. Dumbest thing about this movie is an entire group of pacifists exist, and they melt down any weapons brought their way. How these morons survived this long to be in the sequel escapes me. They should have been zombie chow in the first movie! There was a funny reference to the first movie (there is now a phrase among survivors called "Murrayed", where you kill someone because you thought they were a zombie), which I thought was funny. The new character of Madison is hilarious (how does a bubble headed valley girl type survive?). and a fun poke at The Walking Dead. Sadly, the magic of the first one just isn't here for the most part, and it's just another zom-com.

I decided to dive into The Witcher. Other than knowing of the video games, I had no knowledge of the setting or it's characters. I liked it, but found it mostly uneven (partly due to not catching on that the episodes were in two time periods up until Geralt meeting the Queen). I really enjoyed the last episode though. I still feel Geralt is a slight rip off of Elric (one of my favorite characters/series), so that might be tainting my opinion of the show.

As I posted elsewhere, The Roku channel is showing Game of Thrones Season 1 for free until January 1st. Being one of the few not to have seen it, I figured this was a good time to start.

Actually three time periods. Yennefer, Geralt, Ciri. Young Yennefer period is much older than the other two.

I'm doing a mini-binge of Hawaii Five-0, as I'm a season behind, and the current season has a crossover with Magnum PI. Took a break to watch TNT Jackson, a blaxploitation film from the 70's re-released by Shout Factory. It's about a woman who goes to Hong Kong looking for her brother, finds out he was killed, and then seeks revenge. Starts off with some bad fight scenes, but they get better as the movie goes on. Fun fight scene when she takes on some thugs in nothing but a pair of panties!

I decided to start my "watch 100 movies in 2020" project with whatever movie Prime recommended to me. Well, it recommended the movie Orcs!, and it was ... not good. Action-"comedy" in which Orcs invade one of the U.S. National Parks, but it's not very funny. None of the people in it can act very well, but they're not bad enough to be entertainingly terrible. All in all, a wast of time. Would not recommend. At least it was short.

And now I shall remove it from my watchlist. Thanks for saving me the torture of watching it

Watching Eddie Murphy perform on Saturday Night Live for the first time in 35 years. He's putting the rest of the cast to shame.

Coming back on a coach from the airport, I overheard the driver and his mate talking. One recommended "A really old Eddie Murphy film, Coming to America". Really Old? I remember when it came out!

Probably going to watch The Witcher next. I haven't played the game, as I don't play computer games, but I've heard good things about it.

I remember seeing it in the theatre, I think it was a big deal as it was one of the first films just me and a mate went to see with no parents.

Just binge watched the new BBC three-parter of Dracula. Clever, witty, funny, gory and a great take on the myth. Was highly entertained throughout. There are some lovely little references in it to Cushing and Lee as well for those that are familiar with the Hammer films. Really nicely done and a lovely little twist at the end of the second episode. Would recommend it.

You misheard him. What he said was "You're really old. Watch an Eddie Murphy film: Coming to America."

The end of the second episode is such a great moment. Unfortunately I didn't think the 3rd episode lived up to the first 2. 3rd episode felt really really rushed. Would have preferred 4 episodes at least.

Yes, I definitely agree with that. There was a jump forward in time and another leap of logic (which should have been played out more) in that final episode so it probably would have allowed for a 4-parter assuming other things could have been added. I much preferred what we got though to, potentially, dragging out the content of the final episode by another 1.5 hours which could have been a risk. Its a smashing little mini-series though.

I finished Yamato 2202. I was disappointed. I felt it was a bad show.

I decided to watch Star Blazers: Comet Empire again just to compare and attempt to be critical of my old favorite. To be fair, some allowances must be made. It's a 40 year old cartoon written for kids of another culture and then edited and translated for kids of another. I have some serious nostalgia and rose colored glasses for it, but that doesn't mean I'm not conscious of what it is.

Even still, I came out of the experience thinking Star Blazers: Comet Empire is vastly better, and is entirely deserving of the love I heap upon it.

The reason is simple. Star Blazers: Comet Empire is about the characters and their struggle. Yamato 2202 isn't.

I hear there is another series of the new Yamato planned. I don't know if I'll bother. I feel the showmakers spectacularly fumbled the ball on the Gatlantis remake in nearly every way they could have. Plus, I never really felt the need for further adventures after the Comet Empire chapter anyway.

I was a big fan as a kid.

Likewise. At this point in my life, all I really remember about the show itself is the giant cannon on the front of the ship. And maybe a dude with a big beard? But I have fond memories of getting up early on Saturday mornings to watch it.

I remember a lyric about "through the fire and the smoke we will never give up hope" but when I looked up the intro is wasn't there and I was really baffled. . .until I googled it and found out it was in the closing credits.

I've been watching a mixture of Orphan Black, The Blacklist and rewatching Black Books (huh, I guess there's a theme here...).

Orphan Black I was extremely lukewarm on initially, but as it developed towards season 2 I found myself liking it more and more. I'm impressed by the main actress and she does a much more believable job with the concept than I initially feared.

The Blacklist, well, I'll just say that James Spader is an absolute joy to watch. Some of the plot conceits get a little silly and heavy-handed particularly later on, and once the morality plays and "current year politics" nonsense start worming their way in certain moments become fairly eye-rolley, but overall it's quite an enjoyable watch. The primary protagonist can be extremely annoying at times (she gets more tolerable later on), but I personally consider Reddington to be the main character anyway. :shade: I think it's hilarious how Donald Ressler gets used as the "beat the audience over the head with what's happening" exposition mouthpiece almost constantly; it makes him appear to be a complete dunce (urr... wait... car go under bridge, box truck drive out, car no under bridge no more? where car go?), and conjures to mind what kind of absurdly low exam scores one must have to become a Special Agent at a federal blacksite...

Black Books is just the best sort of absurdist humor, I love Dylan Moran and I've gone with my brother to see his stand up multiple times. Bill Bailey is a riot as well.
