What are y'all up to these days?

Best Selling RPGs - Available Now @ DriveThruRPG.com
My group had our best session yet. We strangled Sky Otters in order to get magical tattoos, and tried to play matchmaker with some dwarves in the shadowfell. There were several good solid minutes where we had to wait until we stopped laughing because of the ridiculousness of the situation.
Those poor Sky Otters. But you'd better look sharp--your referee hipped me to what's coming next week:

So we got back into the post-holiday saddle and picked up playing DCC where we had left off, with the death of my wizard Tianna, and the aftermath thereof. I played Tianna's henchman Einar. It was one of those bookeeping/breather sessions - following up on old tangents, buying and selling equipment, trying to dig up information, hunting down rumors, etc. As play progressed I noticed the cleric Almara was being rather secretive in her investigations, not letting us - and me in particular- know what she was up to.

By the end of the night she revealed to us what she had been planning. Next week, we begin our quest to journey to the Deathlands to try to bring Tianna back to life.
That's how Raising the Dead should be conducted, dammit:shade:!

I ran his first session for First Son. It was inspired by a Fighting Fantasy dungeon crawl. But well, he's three so I think this was the limit of his abilities.
As a bonus First Daughter liked it so much she asked to join us!

Ended up leaving the AD&D table, don't have the spare time at the moment.
Trying to see if I run just 1 game per month for a while, probably going with RuneQuest Glorantha if I'm not done with reading Pendragon.
Still reading Dragon Pass rules. :hehe:

Got my home group's January Savage Worlds games scheduled, yay! 6 of my 7 players actually filled out the Doodle poll, which was helpful.

I'd like do something like have the game always be the second Saturday of the month, for consistency, but a lot of us have work schedules that vary from week to week, so that's not really viable.

That's one I've always wanted to try.

The GM tells us we're going to play adventurers in an Indiana Jones-flavoured scenario involving jungle and nazis and such, set in the 1930s. He's going to create prefab PCs for us so we can start playing immediately. So, mercenaries rather than spies or private eyes, I guess. There will also be some fantastical elements, quite possibly zombies.

And you didn't invite me?!

Oh. Never mind then!

Have a blast! Also, you need to report back on it: I expect no less than a 1,000-word essay.

I own the recently Kickstarted so-called Combined Edition of the book but I haven't really looked at it in any detail. From what I've seen it's a pretty deadly game, though, making it far more gritty than some other pulp games. So we may have to be a bit more cautious than Indiana Jones usually is.

The fantastical elements probably won't be anything overtly magical, but more like a mystically powered artifact or undead.

About to play the inagural session of "Star Wars '78"...watched part of Star Wars last night for inspiration and jotted down a few interesting points (1) the Jedi are described as "nearly extinct," leaving plenty of room for the occasional Jedi to be found or played, (2) star systems are in open rebellion and thus apparently able to defend themselves against the Empire, and (3) the Imperial Navy has fewer than a thousand Star Destroyers, which is not enough to destroy Alderaan, so an open rebellion makes more sense as the Imperal Navy can't be everywhere at once and can't turn up in large numbers at any one location for very long without giving up control elsewhere.

Welcome to the new year, and a strange milestone in my life. The year was 1990, I was a free range tween living on the isle of Manhattan cast adrift with fresh babysitting cash and a desire for something new. This led to a mall, towering as they are in the city, where I found a glossy image calling from the shelves of, what I want to say was a KB Toy Store. The image, a yellow eyed solo smart gun in hand, wires plugged into their spine, rocking jacket, and a car with driver waiting. This was not another Dungeons & Dragons module, this was Cyberpunk.
That was nearly thirty years ago, and history has caught up to us. Of course if you haven't heard, Cyberpunk 2077 is now only a few precious months away, and there is a new tabletop game on the horizon as well. It's a good time to be a gamer. So, what does this have to do with Metahumans Rising?
With World Builders we wanted to give players new challenges. We've talked about the evolution of the Deadheads, and the expansion of military forces. Now lets talk about the Rippers.Working in the information sector there is a quote that has rings disturbingly true

"The Street finds its own uses for things - uses the manufacturers never imagined."
- William Gibson, Burning Chrome

This may be the founding doctrine of the Rippers.

“We’ve survived three alien invasions. The short version, poachers, harvesting humans for experimentation, an intergalactic turf war, and some Christopher Columbus types. Every last one of them left scars on this planet. Just like they left the kit they couldn’t recall. Throw in the occasional super jumpsuit that gets bopped and there's a whole lot of lost tech out there. What do Rippers do? We bash it, bag it, kit it, and thrash with it. Saddle up kid, it’s time to go fishing.”
- Tabby,, Astro Kiddie

The Ripper hierarchy is as follows: Gutter Scraps Benders Tough Nuts and Gunners Junk Dogs Astro Kiddies Docs Mic Droppers Wreckers and the Glitterati Over the next few weeks we will explore what this means, and who the Rippers are as a group.

For that last couple of years, I've been working as editor on an RPG called Strange Tales of Songling that was designed by BedrockBrendan BedrockBrendan. I've been editor on a number of RPG books over the years, but this is the first core game book I have worked on, so I am especially excited to see it getting out there. Brendan is a thorough playtester, so the core rules and four included adventures have all gone through a number of iterations. It's been a lot work, but I think it was worth it.

Anyway, here is a promotional blurb for anyone interested in checking it out...

Strange Tales of Songling

A Horror RPG Inspired by Chinese Ghost Stories

Adventure in worlds haunted by fox spirits, hopping vampires and ghosts. Strange Tales is a Chinese horror RPG inspired by the supernatural accounts of Pu Songling and Yuan Mei. Players confront the supernatural as demon hunters, scholars, wandering swords and dangerous ritual masters.

Strange Tales provides a streamlined and easy system for quick play and comes with four complete adventures. It also includes a selection of monsters based on Chinese anomaly accounts, folklore, and horror movies. The GM section provides a number of approaches with a focus on monster-of-the week style play.

It's currently available in PDF on DriveThru, and print copies will be coming in the future.

Bought it, started reading.
I already like that game !

Also, I just noted I've received my backer copy of Shinobigami, but that's going to wait:shade:!

I am really glad to hear that. Based on our many game discussions over the years, you are one of the people that I thought this game was going to be ideal for.

Checked out of the hospital last night after being there nearly a week. All because I lost too many electroltyes during throwing up. FREEDOM! So good to be home.
That's rough. Glad to hear you doing better.

Taking full advantage of the snow day to rest and fight off the plague monkeys trying to take up residence....

wasn't my best session last night, but the party did finally make it to the site of the epic battle. the did successfully recruit the elves using a bit of knowledge most of them had forgotten, which got them a reroll, which got them a crit for the win. now they have a healthy 24 days until the horde shows up. they have horses that can cover 80 miles in a day due to magic horse shoes, and a pack of refugees streaming in. The next batch arrive in a week, having just had the horde attack their town. 24 days is enough for them to do quite a bit - they could build siege, train militia, try and enlist the dwarves, even train themselves up a bit. I expect they will crack rank 3 (roughly level 9-12 D&D wise) by the time the horde arrives.

decided I will need more time with the social combat rules. I don't feel very comfortable with them, and they don't really jive with most of our styles of play for social stuff. task rules seem to be more our speed for that.

Last night was the 'awkward family dinner' episode in our Champions 5E campaign.

"Why can't you be more like your brother?"
"Mum, I'm a superhero! I save lives!"
"All I'm saying is his company has a corporate box at the rugby grounds and you spend your nights in a cave with a man wearing a fishnet body stocking and a leather thong."

Feng Shui 2 goes on hold, at least temporarily. One of the players offered to run his dungeon for us for a couple of sessions :shade:!
Yes, it might not be my dream kind of campaign, but if a player wants to run something for me, I'm not going to tell him no:grin:!

Heck no you should try to encourage your players to run games! I would offer to bring the beer!

That's more or less what I did. Well, I'm planning to bring Chinese takeout, but the principle is the same:thumbsup:!

One thing I should note is that this isn't a first time running a game for that guy. He has only played in this group, but the group has only existed for less than 3 months total, I think. Before that, he has run games for other players.

So he's not a newbie, in fact he said "I want you to test my new dungeon" (or dungeons, not sure how many there are). I asked him whether he realizes me and Marco - the guy who actually destroyed the plots of the Lotus without fighting, when playing Feng Shui - are probably going to destroy his dungeon without much risks to the PCs' lives.

His answer was "go for it", so I'm going to go total old-school and hire my own mercenary regimen, for a start:devil:!

Though I must say that I'm considering running Strange Tales of Songling or Maelstrom Rome for them after his stint in the GMing seat. Of course, we'll see whether someone else wouldn't step up, too:shade:!
Hey, it never hurts to dream...

But just in case, I'm slowly merging SToS/MR with Passions and Special Effects from Mythras. Though I might end up just running Mythras:skeleton:.

Let's start the new year off right. No, seriously, something is wrong with the new year, it just will not kick over. Now it's up to our heroes to figure out what's wrong in this free adventure seed, The New Year's Loop. This Adventure Seed allows you to pick from one of six different options for why the world just won't keep spinning, with everything from mad science, to cosmic threats. Hope you enjoy.

My home Savage Worlds group will finally meet again this coming Sunday! It's extremely rare for me to write a monologue for an NPC- usually, at most I'll have a general idea of what points they should convey, and improv the actual words they say- but, since it's been more than a month since we've played, and some players have missed some sessions, starting with a monologue should be a good way to recap the campaign so far, as well as provide the next mission.

So, here's what Agent Z has to say with the team back at HEPCATS headquarters.

"Okay, HEPCATS, you've been doing a fine job so far, and although I'm not technically supposed to tell you this yet, I'm confident you're all going to pass probation, at which point you will be promoted from HEPCATS Team Minus One to HEPCATS Team Zero.

I mean, yeah, there was that unfortunate business where, when you were dispatched to Speedchrome City [ed note: the Cyberpunk Shard], you were all captured and manipulated by the Brainjacker instead of completing the mission, but let's be honest, that could have happened to any new team their first time out.

And when you were unexpectedly magically transported to Les Rues Sanglantes [ed note: the Gothic Horror Shard], you handled it with aplomb. You didn't just survive, you thrived, completing a mission of great import with the slaying of Dracula and his three brides, Moana, Alana, and Siobhana.

Which reminds me, and don't let me forget this, at the next awards ceremony, you will each receive your Vampire Slayer Merit Badges.

Anyway, onto new business: You are being dispatched to Saguaro City [ed note: the Old West Shard], where Evelyn Audrey has received a letter from her recently deceased grandfather, the notorious gunfighter Evil Al Audrey. Find out the contents of this letter, and, if they put Miss Audrey in danger, keep her safe.

Jenny in costuming is suggesting that your cover be 'The Amazing Doctor Ray's Travelling Exhibition of Human Oddities and Mechanical Wonders,' but if you have a better idea, work it out with her.

Just make sure you see Agent Shoe for your gear before you depart."

taking the afternoon off to think about my campaign a bit and renew my excitement for the next phase.
  • Sent BCC emails to people in the party with insider info based on their skills
    • the streetwise people learned about the thieves guild, about the romance between the conniving head of the merchant house and the guildmaster of the thieves guild, and anything else illicit
    • the arcane knowledge guy learned about the local wizard, and how he takes a dim view of adventurers. Fortunately, the party wizard has a high commerce skill, and they can talk about business
    • the courtesy folks learned about the leadership and houses, as well as what those houses do, and also the main castle.
    • we don't have anyone who is strong in lore (religion), so no knowledge passed about the multiple temples in the area, though i'll probably pass them some general knowledge (there is a temple of Surya here)
  • looked over the defense of brindol and the timeline and realized they are much earlier - the town really wouldn't even be evacuated yet. So this presents a different set of questions. This is likely before the recruitment of dwarven mercenaries, so that is a job they can do.
  • finding a spot to put in a hook for this to turn into Against the Giants.

How many players do you have?
Six players plus me when we have a full house. Everyone learns something here. Interestingly. The Paladin has a god streetwise and courtesy, so he gets both of those. They will all get some location knowledge for basics like in s and taverns - their characters are from the area.

Even though it's about 5 months away, I'm all ready thinking about what to run on Free RPG Day. I had an idea for an All Flesh scenario about retirees trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. Now I'm considering meshing that with superheroes. Sort of Cockneys vs Zombies meets Supervised (which is about a group retired heroes having one last adventure)
