Gotta post this as so excited!

I just picked this up at a village bring and buy...

:ooh: :ooh: :ooh:

I mean its in amazing condition; the box is slightly depressed at the corners of the front and there are a few blemishes on it but considering its age and where its being sold I was pretty amazed. That's not the end of this though; I opened it up and it had the complete (and I reckon unused) contents PLUS EXTRA STUFF:

SAM-4901.jpg

Price: 7 quid!?!?!?!

I couldn't believe it. Actually broke out in a cold sweat. Anyway, I got back to the car and looked at it again. It really is all there and in unused condition. I went back and donated £40 to the charity fund. I still think this was an amazing find and even if I've now spent the best part of £50 on it I am still over-the-moon with the find. Complete fluke that we went too - was only passing by visiting a friend and just popped in for a look.

Question is, should I have a punt on the lottery tonight with this kind of luck!

That's one of my all-time favorites. Have fun with it.

The sad thing about that is I can come up with a decent rationalisation for that the moment I saw the mechanic. When you rest, you can make running repairs to your armour, repairing dents, closing rents etc. Armour ablation rather than some weird 'too tired to stick your armour in the way of blows'.

To be fair to RofPL it does give those as the main reasons, "Armour fully regenerates after 10 minutes of rest as the player character patches it up and carries out general maintenance". It also mentions a regroup action that can be taken in combat to refresh a small number of points which is pretty much "taking a quick breather so can use armour more effectively" but I'm okay with this kind of rule, the level of abstraction and the reasoning behind it.

The index is rubbish. I'd prefer to not have one than it to be hit-and-miss like this (ie, was looking for Regroup and it wasn't there). You have to know its a Combat Maneuver but even then those aren't listed in the index. Pet peeve and not something that puts me off buying something but thought it was worth mentioning here seeing as though I did the initial post about picking the game up!

Do pirated PDFs count as something good we got recently? 'Cause I got a mountain of WEG Star Wars material, mainly adventure modules.

We don’t endorse pirating at the Pub, even for long-dead product lines. We would appreciate it if members here refrained from posting about how they acquire certain products if it’s illegal. I don’t want any arguments about the legalities of certain cases either. Thank you!

Holy shit.

Besides Bite Marks, I managed (with emotional support human services-aka dog sitting so they don't get lonely and destructive) to pick up Sentinels of the Multiverse OblivAeon box (my friends gave me the HUGE case for Christmas--but just the case, which still brought tears, I don't get gifts very often, now and then.)

Thanks to a too good to pass up Boxing Day (really that is a holiday?) sale from The Design Mechanism, my wallet is lighter and my shelves heavier. They just arrived so I haven't had much time to peruse them, but they look great.

Picked up these two books at Christmas...

Romance of the Perilous Land is a roleplaying game of magic and adventure set in the world of British folklore, from the stories of King Arthur to the wonderful regional tales told throughout this green and pleasant land. It is a world of romantic chivalry, but also of great danger, with ambitious kings, evil knights, and thieving brigands terrorising the land, while greedy giants, malevolent sorcerers, and water-dwelling knuckers lurk in the shadows. As valiant knights, mighty barbarians, subtle cunning folk, and more, the players are heroes, roaming the land to fight evil, right wrongs, and create their own legends.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this one assuming you have had some time to look it over by now.

Congratulations! Your acquisition of 1st edition* Ghostbusters has propelled you into the corps d'elite, the crème de la crème, the illuminati, the most elite rank of RPG aficionados. Your platinum membership card is en route.

Play the lottery, proposition Eiza González, go nuts!

* Playing--indeed, simply owning--2nd edition is a blackballing offense.

Got my copy of Romance of the Perilous Land this weekend. I haven't had a chance to read it, but flipping through it and skimming a few sections it looks really well done. Obviously, as an Osprey book the artwork is excellent. I think that this is the kind of book that I would have loved when I first starting getting interested in roleplaying games. I hope it does well for Osprey. As a bonus, the entire text of the game is OGL.

I missed that this is an Osprey book. Kind of a departure for them, but if they manage to keep their usual quality, then very interesting. I have a stack of their military and historical books. At $17 I may just grab it anyway, noce to see a hard copy game under $20.

Some reading of it scheduled for some time this week!

Looking forward to a more in depth opinion of it. I'll be curious to know whether the "romance" in the title is just a marketing word or if they perhaps look beyond "hit it with a sword" for ideas. I struggle to find a game both my wife and I can enjoy.
Being OGL it should be easy to convert to Lion & Dragon or BRP if I don't care for the game rules.

The Paleomythic game actually looks interesting too, but it looks more sword and sorcery which I love but probably not the right flavor for my wife.

It is hard living in a house with other gamers (my wife and older son) but little overlap in the types of games we like.

Just saw today that this book and the Paleo book are available on Kindle as well. Smart move, more RPG publishers should do that, I realize Amazon may take a healthy chunk but more channels of revenue, particularly one as big as Amazon and Kindle seems like a good idea to me.

Please do tell us about it when you've had a chance to read it. From what I can tell it should be right up my alley, but it's expensive enough that I don't want to buy it without hearing a bit more first.

I got it off Amazon for something like 15 bucks. I'll write some comments about my impressions but want to finish reading it first (and perhaps organize a session to play - I hate 'reviews' of games where the reviewer hasn't even played it!).

I just received my copy of Dark Streets & Darker Secrets - really great stuff for the size of a small digest. I already have Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells, this is the same system, but it has a contemporary urban fantasy pulp weird horror thing going for it.

I'm already pretty impressed, it's jam-packed, really simple character sheet, but lots of GM tables and such, really cool. I can use these in many other games besides this one, so that's pretty useful.
This game can cover X-Files as easily as it can do Lovecraftian investigation, it's really good.
It feels like a minimalistic version of World of Darkness, this is really cool

Here's a review on Questing Beast that gives a much better overview than I ever could:

I checked out the Star Wars 30th Anniversary Edition. I’d forgotten how cool the Star Wars Sourcebook is. After reading about it in Bill Slavicsek’s book, it was interesting to see the foundations of the EU being laid with the world-building. I LOL’d when I read the itemized list of what Han Solo owes Jabba. They’re charging Han for Boba Fett’s expenses and a weregild for Greedo.

Just picked up Strange Tales of Songling from DriveThru...published by BedrockBrendan BedrockBrendan and edited by Baulderstone Baulderstone. I had the distinct pleasure of playtesting it a bit over a year ago (I see that our group is in the credits...very cool). Fun stuff! Flavorful setting, interesting play (wuxia mysteries) and dead simple mechanics - that's very much right up my alley.

The art and layout are startlingly nice after the rough PDF I remember from way back then. I see all the art is done by one person - Jackie Musto. She has a very nice thick-lined style that has just the right amount of cartoonishness. The maps are gorgeously rendered by Francesca Baerald. Did she do work for the digital versions of the Sorcery! titles? Some of her online samples are very reminiscent of those lovelies.

Wow, didn't realize this was being worked on by Brendan, it so up my alley. Reading it over and yeah I like the stripped down mechanics, beautiful cover and interior art, wonderful maps and the four flavourful adventures make this a really good deal. I'd go in for a hardcopy version in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the kind words. I am getting the layout ready for the printer now (we just need to put the cover file together) and hopefully will be available in paper back in the next month or so provided the proof comes back okay.

Oh, quick note on Songling: your bookmarks are a little fucked up. If you used that acrobat plug-in that detects headings by font, that would explain some of what I'm seeing. It's pretty easy to edit in acrobat but a little bit of a PITA.

Thanks. I will take a look at try to adjust that (I don't do the layout myself so I am going to see if I can fix it in the PDF first). This was just automatically generated by Indesign I believe.

FWIW, I'm waiting for the print version, unlike my policy for most games:thumbsup:.
Though I might have to go for the POD, depending on the shipping on the print edition.

Also, you mentioned something about a deadly wuxia game you're working on. I'm still waiting for that one, too:shade:.

Assuming, of course, that it's not the same game, but the text of SToS says it clearly that it focuses on more down-to-earth protagonists that have all the reasons to be afraid of such ghosts:devil:.

Now, why did I say you were close:shade:?
Because it's actually got a nicely detailed combat system that makes combat depend about equally on dice, your statistics and the choices you make! And no, by "choices" I don't mean "do the same thing over and over". That would actually be suicidal.
And that is actually a goal many RPGs have missed!
How does it do this? Is it Way of the Tiger-like "detailed" combat - turn to page 86 to punch the dude in the jaw, turn to page 342 to kick him in the balls - or something else?

...Now to come to what you actually asked:
Russian RPG pages are actually easy to find, but there are just a few "Made in Russia" RPGs. Most players there seem to be using a translated (or untranslated) game.
The only Russian titles I remember are "The Aquarius Age" (Era Vodoleya) and "The Twilight Crossroads" ("Perekrestki sumerek"). Not sure whether any of them has an English variant (probably not).
Someone posted a character sheet for some russian D6 dice pool RPG, and it was beautiful - clear data entry sections, lots of space, simple reminder of the mechanics. Thus endeth my knowledge of the russian RPG scene.

Nope, it's based on opposed d6+Skill rolls, with the margin of success determining wounds, from superficial to very critical (which combine in not-quite-cumulative ways). Wounds impose penalties, so it's very much a death spiral.

However, in the first round only, you're picking a "style" from the five you have mastered, based on the description of the initial stance (and maybe a hint from the PC's extensive skill training). Once you do that, you go to a special episode, where you get modifiers for the first round, which might pretty much resolve the fight in your favour. (I'm proud to say that in my 4 or 5 fights so far, I've always had a close to perfect modifier..in the one exception I won on luck, I'll have to admit). However, you could still survive with some luck in the next rounds even if you get a poor modifier.
And usually, you can run after the first round, too!
Don't mess up in the fights where that last part ain't true:devil:! Though there's usually some way to avoid them.
Oh, and you "advance" (get a Skill increase of 1) if you participate/win in 7 fights. In two more fights I'd have to re-check my notes and see if I've got the Skill increase:gunslinger:.

It might have easily been me:grin:! "The Twilight Crossroads" ("Perekrestki sumerek") is a d6 dicepool system, and I remember it was quite clear and concise.

Provided the print proof comes out good, I am expecting this to be out in print in a month. Shipping costs are always an issue. We don't actually handle that, we have a third party for all that stuff. But my understanding is it is sometimes cheaper if you go through local game stores if you are outside the US (provided they are willing to carry the book).

The wuxia game is the one from Osprey. I co-wrote it with Deathblade (he translates Xianxia novels for wuxiaworld): Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades. Like Strange Tales, it takes a somewhat simpler approach to wuxia rules and character creation (though it doesn't use paths like Strange Tales does). When I made Strange Tales I timed the character creation to make sure it was fast. When I worked on Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades, we timed the combat because we wanted a fast, Gu Long style of fighting. We also aimed for brevity in the entries (to make them easier to run at the table but also, again, to get more of a Gu Long style). Righteous Blood also takes place in China itself. It isn't set in a fantasy world.
