#264,385.

Getting closer to Google by the day!

I am 55 with a CS degree and have written many a device driver for Linux. Great OS.
Great kernel. Pity about the user space. Not that I don't mind me a bit of POSIX-ish shell goodness but they've had 25 years to get their shit together with a stable API base for desktop apps that everybody can agree on. Not that Win32 really achieves that in practice either.

I could happily use Linux for my daily driver - and did for many years - but I've got such a mass of depenency on Windows software that I've just wound up using it on my desktop. I did start on an attempt to get a Linux host up on my W520 but that effort's stuck on a 'what am I missing' type problem getting Optimus up and running.

If I did that, most of my Windows SW could be run through a VM or maybe under WINE. However, it's not been urgent so the issue got shelved. The other option is to go back to hosting the system on Windows and running the Linux stuff in a VM.

Takes me back - I was sysadmin for a Unix network back in the 90s. We'd spend a fortune on high-end Silicon Graphics kit for our 3D visualisation software, but my budget for anything was Red Hat or SuSe Linux+scavenged PC bits.

So I built the firewall and servers for network directory services, e-mail, web and printing, and it all just worked. Happy days!

Lost my job when I got seriously sick, and the last I heard they hadn't bothered keeping up to date with security patches and had suffered several high-profile hacks :-)

Get enough mid 40's geeks at any place Linux is bound to work it's way into a conversation.

I'm curious about the younger folks here. I'm kind of assuming OS familiarity is common. How many folks here under 40 have some familiarity with Linux?

38 years old, college diploma in computer science, know my way around Linux though I haven't used it extensively since my college years.

This morning, McAffee is reporting rpgpub as a malicious site.

When you "watch" a thread, you should be able to set it to either provide e-mail notifications or not. On this thread, when I hit "Watch," a pop-up opens asking if I want to watch it with or without e-mail notifications.

Also, under your Preferences, you have the option to automatically create e-mail notifications for watched content or not. Try unselecting "and receive e-mail notifications." After that, unwatch the threads you're watching, and go through them manually.

Holy cow, that would drive me nutty if I got an email for every post to a thread. Must of turned that off right away when I joined.

This has been a really good month for us. We should break the record for posts.

When I logged on the other day there were 120 guests browsing.

There are 650 guests at the moment. Who said what where about here?

I think my PC might be having a josh with me, it was back down to 50 after I posted this.

Might have been an aggressive crawler.

Back around April of last year, I added an anti-spam module to the RPG Pub. It blocked an average of about 5,000 spam bots per week in its first month. Last September, it blocked about 12,000 spam bots per week.

Last month, our anti-spam module blocked about 31,000 spam bots per week. The vast majority of which were from the Ukraine, China, and Vietnam.

236,003. Hurtling headlong into irrelevance! Panic now! That always helps!

The no politics rule has capped site popularity. Discuss without talking about politics.

I don’t think the no-politics rule hinders us, per se. I think what may be considered a hindrance is that this place doesn’t take itself too seriously and there are a lot of people out there who take “game discussion” very seriously, and I use that term in quotes for a reason. This place, thread tangents and memes and geese-hunting, will never be to their liking.
