A munted shitshow - the most antipodean thing I've heard in a decade - O for awesome..

I really hope they have a plan to deal with the panic buying because it's not remotely sustainable

I really hope they have a plan to deal with the panic buying because it's not remotely sustainable

The plan is that people only have so much money to spend on panic buying. If you can wait it out a week or two, the store shelves should be in good shape again, maybe with the occasional toilet paper or paper towel clean out. The supply chains are intact and stores are still stocking. They are just behind now because there are more shelves to fill and not enough bodies to fill them. That’s why these stores have decided to cut their store hours back. It allows what employees they have to work quicker without having customers in the stores.

I hope the situation 'normalises' however I see no guidance from government on how to deal with panic buying or maintain supply chains adequately. The problem is a vicious cycle as the more empty the shelf the more compelled you are to 'stock up'.

Of course things will be different in other countries. The far east places like Vietnam seem to know what they're doing and are looking after people for example

Been sick for over two weeks now, and now my wife is sick. Was told by doctors it was just the flu, but they don't know for sure because basically unless you are sick enough to be hospitalized they won't test you in the US. So we're just sitting at home and staying away from people. My mom is picking up groceries for us and dropping them off at the door.

We're fine, neither of us are showing any extreme symptoms, but yeah, may be some financial struggles as while I work from home already so my work is fine, she is having to take time off work and doesn't get paid time off.

But it is what it is.

A restaurant in town had to close permanently because they can’t afford to be closed for two weeks. This virus is going to have huge negative repercussions on small business.
Absolutely.
I hope the government comes up a package to help everyone.

Look who's living in a country that still has that fancy-pants social welfare thingy.
When I were a lad ... nevermind.

The US Treasury Secretary said that they have talked about getting checks out to Americans within a few weeks as part of the relief package they are working on. The amount is not yet known, although rumors I read were $1,000 per individual adult and $500 per child. Small businesses would also get funds and loans. Tax payments have been deferred for ninety days past filing.

I just shelled out an ungodly amount in self-assessment tax the other day. Getting my taxes deferred would be handy as well.

Was just told we won’t close the facility because we don’t exceed the 50 person threshold.

I had to be the asshole to point out it was now 10 people (yes, I know it excludes businesses, but they were the ones who decided to cite the CDC, not me).

Either way, my boss (who was not involved in the meeting - I’m a contractor, it’s complicated)told me that as long as our contract doesn’t get shut down I’ll get paid, even if I have to “work from home” (which I can’t really do, but he’s aware of that).

So onward we march.

Given Intel here in Portland shut down, and people at Microchip are calling in sick to avoid work, there is a slight chance they will shut down. Which just means it will be Security and the facilities staff for the most part at night. So I'd still have to come to work, but I won't have many people around (if it's just us and facilities, there would be less than 10 of us on the entire site)

I know I'm lucky in that both I work from home anyway, but also that the field I work in (selling video games, mainly through Steam) will probably not see the big downturn that most industries will. I mean, a lot of people at home with nothing to do, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a slight uptick in sales, at least in the short term (long term effects with economy downturn could be not great though).

Harris county, Texas - that's where Houston is, just ordered all restaurant dining rooms to close. Assuming other counties do NOT follow suit this is going to effect 4.6 million people and is almost certain to kill MANY small restaurants. Without meaning to dive into Texas politics I think this is too far. Social distancing is one thing, closing businesses is too much.

Fucking sucks. Even with government interventions, this is going to wreck any small business based around people being in the same space together.

Even big businesses are at risk; the british high street has been in a bad way for a long time, and this is going to kill some companies.

Yeah, my oldest brother is a carpenter. He makes furniture, but the majority of his sales are like, craft shows where he does cutting boards and small ornaments and stuff like that. The shutting down of all the shows is really really hurting him.

It really sucks. Hopefully things work out.

I work in speciality insurance, so I'm sure there is going to be the mother of all runs on business interruption cover and reinsurance over the next few months.

In related news, IR35 has been postponed for a year.

Brexit and COVID-19 are still a worry economically, though. My contract runs out in about six weeks.

I'm now working from home indefinitely. I work IT for Visa (the credit card company), supporting the infrastructure and applications. Not much impact to my work, aside from less card transactions happening on a daily basis.

My wife has worked from home for seven years as a Travel Agent for Centurion cardholders with American Express (wealthy folks, essentially). She is always busy. The last week has been working on cancelling travel for all her customers, getting them back from abroad, etc. As of today, she has very little to do as no one is booking travel. So we have no idea what will happen with her job.

My oldest son works at Starbucks. They have gone to take out and drive thru service only. Customers can come in, order and take their stuff to go. They are not allowing seating inside. They have already seen, in just two days, a significant reduction in customers. I would not be surprised to see his hours get cut at some point, if they don't eventually outright close at some point.

Scary, uncertain times...

Yeah, I'm in that position, despite having always worked from home. I'm a freelance copywriter who almost exclusively works with small indepedent businesses.

At the moment, nobody is going to be interested in updating their website blurb or having advertising slogans written for them.

And as for my big project, a side company selling murder mystery parties to the general public... (That was due to be launched in a few months).

I'm very lucky we have my gf's student loan to fall back on.

The city of Austin and Travis County did too. But they don't have to close, they just aren't allowed to have people eating in the restaurant. As long as it's takeout, they're fine.

They did the same thing here in Portland. You can go inside and order, but it can only be to go. All dining inside is banned

They haven't formally done that here, but a few places have instituted that of their own accord. But since Ubereats exists, it doesn't affect my life too much

This morning straight out of night shift I went to the supermarket and managed to find almost everything I needed except sour cream...

Just an observation of a bizarre but I guess not unexpected occurrence (and probably outing myself...) but I've run into Coronavirus themed Rule 43. O.o

Did you have a dyslexia moment and mean rule 34, or do you mean you've run into Coronavirus giving court testimony or that Coronavirus as an inmate can be segregated from the general population?

New bad campaign idea. Players play pandemic contagions personified as cute anime girls, and compete to see who can cause the most damage.

What's rule 43?

I'm sure that I have it. I'm getting winded easily and generally feel sick. No fever or cough though, so I'm just going to isolate in order to not spread it around. I'll probably go to the hospital if I start to feel worse. I figure it's not a good idea to risk getting the doctor sick just so they can tell me what I already know. This sucks.
