Met with some co-workers yesterday to commiserate and complain about work while maintaining appropriate social distance and woke up today with a splitting headache...from my hangover.

Tried joining Netflix but it just tells me there's a problem with my payment method.

Prime it is then

One good thing about Prime over Netflix is that you can also Pay for individual movies to rent or even buy. I find Netflix is good for series and original content, but if I want to see recent blockbusters prime is very easy to rent than the old method I used to use from my Cable Provider's "on demand" service.

Apparently, hordes of idiots decided to take to forests, parks, beaches, markets, refuse points and DIY stores because the weather was nice... I think these folks could do with just a wee bit more panic.

We only went out to the supermarket for our daily shopping. No toilet paper and cut mixed vegetables this time.

3631 positive tests, 354 IC patients, 136 deaths, 836 hospitalized or released
Today our government sent out a so-called NLalert over the cell phone network telling people to stay inside and keep 1,5 m distance, in hopes of appealing to the aforementioned hordes of idiots. The same hordes of idiots who had been calling for a shutdown of the schools and even a total lockdown earlier last week. Humanity's idiocy and hipocrisy never seizes to amaze (and depress) me. Who are these people?

There was an error in the distribution systems of the supermarket chain we frequent. No cut mixed vegetables, no toilet paper. I do hope to find one pack of toilet paper in the next few days because we're slowly running out... Fucking hoarders.

If the hot weather doesn't finish off the vorus then all the people out playing and generally not social distancing (like today) will finish the rest of us off. I shall end up some old man shaking my fist at the kids playing ball. In generations to come the reasons why will be forgotten. Passed into folk memory to become an urban legend. It will form around me like a wicker man and all people will know is that I will be scary old virus guy. Shaking my fist from a darkaned room in a prefab built after the second world war and before the great Computer Revolt and the climate breakdown. They will laugh from behind their air filters, until the nanometer beeps DANGER!

Spent the weekend migrating to a new Mac and providing remote IT support to my dad...

Exact opposite, my exercise is swimming and the local pool is closed so I've been dozing with the cat, watching movies and indulging in Cheesies and beer.

Sounds great!

All I can tell you is that if you think that's a crowded beach in Southern California, you've never been to the beach in Southern California. :shade:

Honestly, the only thing I can remember about beaches in Southern California is how much trash is on them. It made me sad to see such a pretty beach covered in garbage.

What was always surprising to me was outside of summer or a super sunny weekend, Venice Beach was pretty lightly trafficed during the week.

I've got a friend who has been taking photos of all the "Closed for virus" signs in town, and I'm really glad because with everyone indoors, they'd be lost. These few months are going to seem unreal to anyone in a few years, even if they lived through it, but especially if they weren't alive and are only reading it in history books.

Oregon is instituting a stay in place order, to go in effect by Wednesday. Where I work is still going to be open, as manufacturing is considered essential. I had to get a paper so I can travel to and from work without hassle.

At least that club owner is keeping his employees working. Sure, it's not what they are used to making, but it's better than being out of work and waiting for unemployment to kick in

Oh, I didn't think it was necessarily a bad thing but an odd sign on the times. O.o

Wasn't implying you did. Just pointing out the club owner was being a stand up guy by thinking outside the box

Portland has a butt ton of strip clubs. I have friends down there and Everytime I visit it feels like they have them every mile or so.

Portland has more strip clubs than New York City does, with about 1/6th the population. Having lived in NY, and now living in Portland, i was surprised by that. There's one not far from where I live, and another between my place and work. At least 2 or 3 others close by I'm aware of. Back in NY, the closest one to where I lived was miles away

Yeah I swear it felt like in Portland a bar and a strip club were almost synonymous. I mean I'm not complaining but man that is wild

Well NYC has been gentrified a lot over the years, the days of 42nd Street and Sex World are long gone. Strip clubs in general are in steep decline, probably due to internet porn but I think it's Portland's blue collar roots that probably explain the strip clubs. The same use to be true of Vancouver until it was similarly gentrified. Vancouver used to have the sleaziest strip clubs I encountered anywhere.

I've been watching and reading about the flu pandemic of 1918. It's like the ultimate footnote of history. Mentioned with a death total and walk right passed it. Nevermind that WWI kills less people and is seen as a massive event.
But I see how it's true. This odd artificial event happens, does it's damage and we recover. The damage is personal but not long lasting to a nation or world narrative. The deaths due to cancer don't make a lasting impact on history. WWI changed governments and political/national power. The flu both in 1918 and now is something to get passed. It's a major irritant and stressor for us living through it.

In that regard I think it's truly sad. People will lose businesses, go into debt and see some major life setbacks but the world will fill most of those voids. Those individuals deserve better than that.

I think the Coronavirus will actually have lasting impact. The 1918 flu was unusual, in part because so few people travelled, and impacted a world that was still relatively rural for many people. With the highly mobile and urbanised world we live in, and whole generations (including myself) who have never really known hardship or fear, then the impact on our collective psyche will be massive.

From the perspective of history rather than politics 9/11 re-shaped the world in many ways. I think C-19 could have similar wide- and long-reaching impacts. Ebola was ‘over there’ and HIV ‘for them’. This is ‘here’ and for ‘us’, by which I mean it is impacting the broadest and most wealthy sections of global society rather than the poor or minority elements.

I am confident humanity will get through this, I’m just not sure exactly how global society will look when it does...

So that's it. Lockdown.

This won't last, at least in practice. How can it be enforced?

Society, as it stands right now, is finished. People may not want to get political, which is fine, but fundamentally there is no recovery for our current economics from this. Local game store valiantly tried to stay open, not because their arseholes. But because they recognised isolation hurts their business and hurts their customers. They offered to stay open with necessary conditions/restrictions but this lockdown will shut them down. They can't open because games are "non essential" and so they will go out of business. Done.
