Does your wife wonder what the heck is going on with this? I mean you take a selfie of yourself in the mirror wearing a Hawaiian shirt.

Come to think of it. If I did this my wife would likely start to ask then shake her head and think "No. I don't actually want to know."

My wife would take one look and breathe a sigh of relief. “Could have been far worse,” she would say.

I guess disguising themselves as Pascels Pizza didn't work.

I wish I could get this for my two year old. It would look more accurate.

Weighed in @ 179 this morning. Down from a high of 192. First time under 180 since Summer of 2018. Feeling pretty good about it.
Hey way to go, losing weight sucks, especially if you’re not a youngster. How are you doing it?

Normally I’d figure some giant will snap them up and reopen them, but I don’t think large indoor areas where kids are in a big mass is ever going to recover in the Age of COVID, not with all the AntiBac Karens wanting to safeguard their little Baby Jesus. That’s going to be a great fucking generation.

I'm crashing quite late here, just about to get some shut-eye and Dumarest's good morning Hawaiian shirt pic just shows up heh heh
It's good to have some consistency in these crazy times

Yeah, I'm 42. Up until I was about 28, I could eat anything I wanted, in any quantity, without gaining weight. It's been a long time since I was 28...

For about a year, from March 2019 until the gym closed for COVID in March 2020, I was working with a personal trainer for two one-hour sessions per week. I was focused primarily on strength training (to turn fat into muscle) with a bit of conditioning. On top of that, I would go for the occasional long, slow run. That got me down from low-190s to mid-180s. More importantly, to me, it changed the shape of those pounds: smaller belly & bigger arms.

Then I hit a plateau, so started doing another day or two per week at the gym on my own. I was just starting to really get into that when the gym closed .

So, between mid-March and the present, my personal trainer has been sending me exercise programs that I can do with my home equipment. I don't have any heavy weights at home, but I do have some weights, as well as resistance bands, an exercise mat, and a stationary bicycle. Also, with everything closed, my main form of recreation is to go for walks in the Forest Preserve. And I still do the occasional run.

I think what really made the difference of being able to drop from mid-180s to high-170s is that the COVID shtudown caused a massive change in my eating habits. I used to go out for lunch almost every workday. With my work closed for ten weeks, I switched to home-cooked food almost entirely. Healthier ingredients and smaller portions than I typically got with restaurant food. I'm also saving a ton of money by not eating out all the time.

Although I'm back at work now, and the restaurants around work are open for takeout, I'm sticking with eating my home-cooked food for lunches roughly 90% of the time. I've realized I don't even really like a lot of the restaurants around work and I was just eating at them out of habit.

I've also completely eliminated soda (or pop or fizzy drink or whatever your local term for sugary, carbonated beverages is) and cut way back on beer.

I am really happy about being under 180, but more important than the number on the scale, I just feel healthier and have more energy.

ETA: I used to hate weight-lifting, because I found it super boring. It's still kinda boring, but I can't argue with the results.

9/10

Well hello! It seems that this reviewer's comments may be receiving traction, because today's shirt lacks for no color. Yup, I think that's all of 'em. Some may say that such a profusion of hues is indulgent, even garish. I feel sorry for those people. They don't understand the purpose of a Hawaiian t-shirt. It is to lay aside such stultifying concerns in favor of relaxation and the casual pleasures of the tropics. Would you call an orchid indulgent? A parrot garish? Nay! Shine on, you crazy diamond!

I finally have a more stylish mask, I went with the stealth nerd option (and yes it is time to have a visit with Mr Razor  ), those who recognize it will know it and the rest will remain clueless.

I'm going to break the rules a little bit, so please be kind with your vitriol.

I went ahead and picked up a sticker to show off my political leanings.

Are you really gullible enough to think they'll stick to that "followers will be eaten last" policy? When he ran to rule the Zargonians of Pgyzx VII over 56% of followers were unhappy with the time of their consumption.

Yeah, you just can't trust politicians these days. I mean look at our ex-governator he just admits it doesn't even try to spin the lie.

Yeah man after about 37 or so I was no longer able to eat whatever the hell I wanted in whatever amounts I wanted. People will feed you a lot of bullshit and stupid pet theories on the topic but E E-Rocker gave some good advice born out of actual experience. Bottom line one needs to consume less calories than their bodies burn to lose weight. There are a millions ways to skin that cat but adjusting one's eating habits is the most effective manner.*

A lot of people set themselves up for failure by relying on gut instinct, vague guidelines, or complete horseshit when adjusting their eating and exercise patterns. Most people have no idea how many calories they burn during the day versus how many they consume. I suggest keeping a log, recording all food and exercise to stay on track towards your target weight. Myfitnesspal.com is free and does all the math if you don't want to figure it out for yourself. Losing one or two pounds a week is a safe and realistic goal.

*Obviously exercise helps but adjusting eating habits is first and foremost.

Having devoted myself fairly rigorously to weights for a couple of years, in retrospect, I came to the conclusion that strength plateaus a lot more quickly than most people think. There are three exceptions: men in their 20's, users of performance-enhancing drugs and genetic freaks. You can improve a lot with work, but if you are outside one of those three groups, you will never achieve the promised heights.

One reason that I've fallen off working out these days is because I probably pushed myself too hard trying to break past that plateau. My goal is to get back in the saddle by the end of the year, and combine it with better nutrition and more reasonable expectations.

I had a trainer for a while who would vary my routine a lot, but I enjoy working out with weights and I really don't need variation. So I ended up taking the exercises that I liked the most, and eventually we parted ways. He was too expensive, anyway.

Ultimately, I'd love to have a home gym which is just a mat suitable for deadlifts, a squatting cage, a good bench, an Olympic weight bar, two adjustable dumbbells, plates, and a pull-up bar. There's very little you can't hit with that! And it should be possible to put the whole thing together for about $600, which is less than three years of a super-cheap gym membership. The main problem is finding enough space.
*Obviously exercise helps but adjusting eating habits is first and foremost.
I feel like eating affects your health and weight, while exercise affects your health and what kind of weight you carry. I wouldn't mind being 240 lbs. if I had only 12% body fat. A lot of people who focus on lifting find that they don't lose any weight but they transform their mass from fat to muscle, which can be quite nice.

OR it can start to look ridiculous without the person realizing it...

There's this troglodyte of a guy at my work...

Obviously tastes vary, but I think the truly absurd physiques tend to require an abusive regimen of drugs and exercise. If a person is getting stronger to the extent that is looks ridiculous while they are fully clothed, something is off.

Hmmm... you may be right. This guy's muscular physique does look ridiculous. He's always acting tough and has exactly three topics he talks about, and very loudly: body building, soccer and gambling. I usually just accept people as they are and leave them be but I feel it would help if this particular guy knew how laughable he really is. He's obnoxious, empathically poorly developed and obviously very immature and insecure.

There's nothing ridiculous about a normal athletic muscular physique, of course.

E E-Rocker Thanks man that was inspiring. The constant working and isolation without any tabletop gaming was starting to get to me. I haven't been to the gym since this covid-19 nonsense started and have been putting on weight. Your story motivated me to try and figure out a way to get back in the saddle again.

I prefer calisthenics to weights, isn't that weird? I never got the results I wanted from weights* but with an aggressive military-style calisthenics routine I get stronger really fucking fast. Not benching 300 strong obviously but closer to what I feel is my ideal "fighting weight" if that makes sense. Strong enough to hit hard yet remain light on my feet.

*I am willing to admit I was doing it wrong and in no way am I criticizing lifting or discouraging others from doing it. I just didn't get the results I wanted and was never able to bench the big numbers.

Swimming has always been my preference. Hiking is #2, neither is exactly home friendly.

If you think it is tough trying to find room for an exercise room, I'd like to introduce you to the Olympic sized pool. :hehe:

Even one of those treadmill swimming pools run around $30,000+ and they aren't exactly tiny.
