Watched Hounds of Love, an Australian horror thriller loosely based on a real case of serial killers in the mid-80s. Intense and very well acted, its subject matter is not for the faint of heart.

Along with a recent rewatch of the film version of The Animal Kingdom, The Nighingale and The Snowtown Murders I'd say modern Australian film excels at the arty, violent thriller these days. As all these films are about the ugly underbelly of Australia I always joke about what a lovely picture they paint of our friends downunder.

Yeah I guess it's much like what Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Deliverance did for Americana and rural life - all that pure wholesome goodness of John Denver was undone with just a few scenes of those films!

No more Rocky Mountain High !!!

At this rate we may have throw out some noble rustic Colonial period piece with Hugh Jackman and Kate Blanchett, or even roll out a cheesy buddy-mentor road flick starring Chris Hemsworth and Paul Hogan, just to repair the damage!
heh heh

Just finished the Excellent Star Trek Deep Space Nine.
Now watching TNG. It doesn't hold up as well in the first two seasons. In fact I'm pretty sure it would have been controversial today for the opposite reason it was back in the 80s.

I remember a time when, for me, Doctor Who was the best thing on TV, up there with one of the best things ever. Each year I'd wait with baited anticipation for the new season. No, not every episode was a winner, but I generally loved the characters so much I didn't even mind the duds.

Somewhere around the middle of the 11th Doctor's run, I began to fall out of love with the show. By the time the 12th Doctor premiered, I just realized I was simply not enjoying watching it anymore. And, sadly, I walked away. I've thought about going bak and checking out what's happening post-Moffat, but, nothing I hear about it makes it sounds appealing. Every once in a while I'll go back and watch the Russel T Davis era episodes, and they mostly hold up. Unfortunately, since I know them so well, that sense of wonder and the unexpected is gone, but, well, that's life when it comes to serialized media I've found.

Maybe someday someone will come back and reboot it again like NuWho did, and make it fun again.

Same. Only I liked 11 all the way through. I did not like 12 at all, and just could not be bothered to watch any longer. I'm enjoying 13 though.

I loved 11 as well. I actually thought / think 12 and 13 are enjoyable enough, but even I'll admit the writing is inconsistent at best. However, I did think 12's last season, post-Clara, with Bill and Nardole as companions, was pretty strong. If anyone gave up during the first season or two of 12, you might consider checking out that last season of his.

I would but I found Capaldi's portrayal lacking more than the writing (which was also bad) He came across as incompetent. I decided to stop watching before I lost a good opinion of the Doctor in general.

Prime offers Brit Box, free for 30 day trial, I'm thinking of getting it and binging on all the really early Dr. Who and Black Adder. Too bad they don't have The Avengers or I'd consider keeping it.
I sub to BritBox on and off, mostly for my classic DW needs.

Know what I hate? Okay, "hate" is way too strong a word, know what annoys me? How, in so many made-for-streaming shows, you have to get 3 episodes in before the story really starts! 3 episodes times roughly 42 minutes = 2-plus hours before the story even really starts. Meanwhile, I could watch a 90-minute movie and get a complete, beginning-to-end story.

Which, yeah, isn't necessarily better, but it's more to my taste.

It also seems like every other series wants to do one long plot for 100+ episodes - especially genre shows. So they give out the plot in baby spoonfuls to make it last. The last time I fell for that was X Files and even then I bailed around season 5.

I have all of the Nu-Who seasons except the last two Jodie Whitaker seasons, which I just caught up on via our free streaming service.

However that Amazon Prime Brit Box deal may be a good way to catch up on some Classic Dr Who, if they have it

I would love to see the entire run of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker again...

By chance and courtesy of Netflix, I've just started watching season 10 of New Who, which I gather is Peter Capaldi's last. I'd got rather burnt out with the show by the end of season 9, though I've not had the chance to see some of the intermediate specials between that and season 10, like 'The Many Husbands of River Song.' I thought the first episode of the season, 'The Pilot' was actually quite good and found Bill Potts a fairly interesting companion. I've only reached the end of part 1 of the series--'In Extremis'--so I guess I've only now got to the main antagonist for the season, if there is one.

One thing I miss about the Old Who format, where stories were serials, is that they gave more space for world-building and development of characters beyond the Doctor and his companions. It seems to me that it used to be fairly usual to have scenes which had none of the regular characters in them--just the inhabitants of whatever world a particular set of episodes were set in. There's a good deal less of that in New Who, for obvious reasons.

I wish the show had taken the opportunity to reboot when Capaldi came on and had Bill and Nardole for all three seasons. No disrespect to the actress, but Clara just didn't do it for me, whether with 11 or 12.

Yeah I like modern TV but I'm coming to realize movies are still my preferred medium. A 90 minute to 2 hour movie can impact me far more than most TV shows. A good three hour film feels epic and deep in away few TV series do.

I think most TV shows don't really take advantage of their long running time, the aforementioned True Detective season 3 I mention above (8 one hour episodes) is one of the few exceptions. There is sometimes the claim that a TV series is like a film but I'd say only rare exceptions like Twin Peaks: The Return or Too Old to Die Young actually feel like that and both are very radical and made by filmmakers.
I rarely enjoy live action television unless it is humorous like Always Sunny or informative in nature. I feel like a lot of television series stretch out the content or add superfluous content to fill out 13 episodes or whatever (looking at you Warrior Nun) whereas a film can get the job done in 2 hours tops. The last really good live action television series I enjoyed was the new Twin Peaks on Showtime a couple years ago. I haven't gotten around to watching True Detective season 1 much less season 3, all I know is that it mentions the King in Yellow so no spoilers!

They have every season from what I can see, I watched the first Dr. Who episode last night. It was fun.

So this showed up in my Amazon recommendations, which is odd since I don't really buy any movies or TV shows and I have never heard of this. Anybody know what it is? (Honestly I'm not really that interested, but the female lead looks hot and that always gets my attention.)

I tried it, but honestly couldn't get past the first few episodes, so couldn't give you a good assessment. I'd planned to revisit once I had some time and nothing else to watch. But that time doesn't seem to be soon in coming.

Bounty hunters in space.

I liked it, it was fun and not overly pretentious. Not high art by any means, but my tastes are admittedly more lowbrow than not.

Yea she is a foxy babe to say the least and I'd like to see more of her. Never heard of the show you mentioned but she looks good with a Cleopatra cut in Ready Player One.

I wanted to like this, but... Now, this MAY have changed later in the first season, but there was a little too much Super Competent 90's Style Action Girl for me. She could outfight anyone, out shoot, out touch the soldier in her circle. I get that she was the main lead, but I prefer a balance of expertise.

Maybe it's the D&D player in me. I don't mind competence in multiple fields, but the rest of the team should be able to as well.

If I ever come across it again, I'll give it another chance.

Next you will be pushing the 'Russell Brand for Dr Who' movement heh heh
Recently noticed that Amazon Prime is including The Adventures of Tintin now (as opposed to simply selling it). Watched the first story, not bad, seems faithful to the books.
I have this series, in addition to the really great Spielberg/Jackson one.
The animated tv series is quite good, very much in keeping with many of the original stories

I'm considering a streaming service...this may get Prime across the line for me!

This was my problem as well. Why even have the rest of the crew?

Perry Mason is great, though I still keep expecting them to play the theme from the old TV show with Raymond Burr.

When they brought the show back in the late 80s, and Burr had gained about a hundred pounds, some wise guy made up lyrics:

Perrrrrrrry Mason
Perrrrrrrry MASON!
He knows who the killer is
But he's too big and faaaaaat
To CHASE 'em!

Slam-bang pulpy space opera about bounty hunters (initially; the focus changes in later seasons). One of my all-time favorite shows.

ETA: I directly stole bits of it for my old Savage Worlds space opera campaign.

Watched the first 3 episodes of the new season of the Netflix comedy Norsemen. It's funny.

The end of the previous season lost me as I found it went from clever stupid to stupid. Good to hear it may have returned to form.

Honestly, it's been long enough that my memories of the previous seasons are pretty vague.
