I got a lot of mileage out of a modified Wolverine. Ditched some of the weapons and put in more heat sinks so I can use jump jets for a longer period of time and still fire everything I had.

What's a good solo mech? If you had to pick a medium or heavy mech to pilot with no support, which would you pick?

Well I am influenced from playing so much of the video game so I'd go with the Black Jack as a good overall medium mech for going solo. 45 tons so you can get scraped up a bit without it being fatal, two acs, four lasers lets you go for a strong alpha strike or a nice long range shot and jump jets for extra mobility is always welcomed. Mook mech to fight against? for me its a toss up between a lance of Locust or Urban mechs. One shot can make a Locust a useless stick on the field and the Urban Mech is just plain fun to beat up on because they are all armor. Be careful of going against a smart opponent using a Spider though the little things wisely used can wreck an already injured medium mech or pin it down to be sniped by a pair of Jenners.

Did anyone ever play the Battletech "Combat Book" Game? It was descended from the Ace of Aces mechanics, and played the same way. Each opponent using a book to battle their opponent.

yep. I cover those earlier in the thread. Just sad there was never an Atlas book.

Those go for crazy money these days because they featured tons of Unseen artwork

That looks like a resin print. If you can point me to the STL I can try it on my printer for comparison.

It is, I found that on offer from an Etsy seller. Let me see if I can find the STL.

I'd really like to get one of them printed in 28mm scale, but no idea how much that would cost

I would have to buy this one so not happening right now.

that's what I intially thought, but on closer inspection it looks as though the stl is free, the price is for a commercial license

When the first one gets done printing I'll check it again.

I created an account but wasn't able to access it for free. I probably wouldn't go with that one anyway because it requires quite a bit of assembly. I think that thing is measured in feet not inches when assembled at the designed height.

Downloading and slicing now. I'll let you know what it looks like when it's done
It did not turn out well. Some of it I'm sure is I need to tune settings to get a better print. I might try again at a different angle because this was lying flat and it had sooo much supports that I had a hard time getting them off. Broke both legs and more.

3D printers must be much faster now than they were a few years ago when I first became aware of them, I was expecting a print of that size/complexity to take a day or two. Can you melt that one down and reuse the resin again?

So is the issue in that case with the stl itself - is it worth me trying to find you another one of better quality? Or is that why the other one is divided into multiple pieces?

I found this video of one being printed like that:

Well I bet if I switched out the nozzle to a smaller diameter and tuned some settings I could get a serviceable print but I think it has more details than I'm going to be able to print successfully.

I can't reuse it really buy it's like $0.10 cents in material. Not worth worrying about.

Trying it again at a different angle to see if it helps. Lots of stuff to play with to get a good print.

I tried again. All I changed was the angle the mini was printed at to change how much support material I'd have to pull off.

I also put a similar figure from the 2007 Classic Battletech introductory boxed set next to it for comparison.

If you look closely you will see a light grey at the hip joints and elbows. That's where I put a little putty to attach the arms and legs that broke off trying to get the support material off the mini. If you pay to have one printed make sure you use resin. I don't think PLA is strong enough in sheer at the joints.PXL_20210123_072454372-01.jpegPXL_20210123_072604345-01.jpeg

I've got that starter. The atlas is the best piece in the set. Man those are ugly. The new starter has fewer figures but they're nicer.

Yeah I've always thought it was kind of cool but seeing that starter up against a broken half assed printed atlas is not scoring as much points for the intro one as I thought it would.

Maybe PLA and a little printer settings, post processing love is worth it.

I'm going to try again. Printing him upside down with fewer supports and a brim.

OK having printed him several times now I feel confident saying this fig was designed to be printed as 5+ separate pieces and someone slapped them together into a STL without any understanding of how brittle it would make it. The figure consistently shears off at the leg joints and arm joints. You probably could do a reasonable print if it was given to you as 5+ pieces and then glue them together. The detail on the center piece was slightly better with this print primarily due to much less support connections.

I found out the stl ofthe original figure in the pic I posted above came from a person's patreon account, I may see how much it costs to join - if only $1, I may do it just to grab that file.

Wow, nope $26. A bit much for a single stl file. Seems like one should be available online, when I first went looking for it I found dozens of dead links to shapeways and thingverse, so it's just a matter of finding one of the originals archived somewhere

If you find it I can try printing it. Same with any mechs you want. I wouldn't mind having some too so it's just saving me search time.

cool. I've seen other mechs so far, but the Atlas is my #1 fav so I've been concentrating on him. I do wish I could find one in the classic style - the best I've ever seen was the one done by Armourcast, but I've never seen that for sale in the wild, I think it's been on my ebay alerts for 9 years now

I guess 15mm would be good if you wanted to expand your choices of infantry/ground units, but as I play strictly mechs, I prefer 6mm, and would only want to go to 28mm for something I could lavish with paint and treasure as a showpiece. I'd hate to have to invest in a totally new scale of terrain for the tabletop, I already have 6mm for BT, 10mm fr Warmaster, and 25-30mm for everything else.

It's just not Battle Tech if you can't kick over a tank once in a while.

I've been working on custom rules for adding Godzilla and friends to the game

I've seen someone translate Battletech mechs into OGRE to speed it up.

I've sold my group on Alpha Strike so far, which is dead fast, hoping to eventually lead up to the full rules
