Contra Gravity

Flyers with negative-G thrusters for propulsion and loft. Smaller, personal units are called flitters, although CG's come in all sizes from small air taxis through military and civilian transports through to short haul passenger liners and cargo lifters.

APQ-30 Drones

The APQ-30 is a long range patrol drone with a CG unit allowing hovering and close manoeuvring. They are used by the gendarmes for long-range patrol missions in the wastes.

Sarno Zadikun

General Sarno Zadikun is the commander-in-chief of the Gendarmes. His dislike of Zawi and the ministry has been an open secret for decades. Unfortunately, Zawi has the ear of Andreas Bhavana, the minister of the interior and Zadikun's boss, so he can occasionally pull strings to get Gendarme resources. These tend to be made available only grudgingly.

Rock Hoppers

Critters native to Raquos. They hunt and scavenge in packs and are named for their ability to climb and scamper about rocky terrain. Individuals weigh approximately 50-80kg but a pack will attack much larger prey and they can be dangerous to humans.

The Rock Hopper's life cycle is based around a brood phase where one or more females within a pack will find a secluded, defensible location to raise their cubs. The pack will try and remain inconspicuous but will forage for food in the region, and will defend the brood aggressively if threatened. Once the cubs are old enough to roam with the pack the brood will be abandoned.

Scrambler

An all-terrain vehicle resembling an elongated six or eight wheel quadbike. Scramblers have an articulated chassis allowing them to get over very rough terrain and are sometimes used as transport in undeveloped regions.

No rush. Feel better soon and take care of yourself.

Just an update on my status - my shoulder is getting better but not out of the woods yet. I'm still rationing time on the computer. Pressure at work should ease in the next couple of weeks as I finish something up. Watch this space.

Heal, and feel better!
What he said. I play PbP so it can accommodate my crazy life so I certainly understand it needs to accommodate everyone else's life

Just by way of an update - my neck has started playing up again, quite badly this time. I'm going to see a specialist privately tomorrow, so will keep you posted.

Hope you feel better soon!
So do I. I do not recommend chronic referred nerve pain.

But - off to see the quack tomorrow. Harley St., no less.
I'm not sure what's going to hurt more - my neck or my wallet.

I'm getting an epidural steroid injection on Wednesday. With a bit of luck that will calm the irritation down.
The condition is very painful indeed - even more painful than watching edition wars about which version of OD&D is the best.

The steroid injection has improved matters in that I can now work on the computer, although there is still a bit of irritation and referred pain. Most - but unfortunately not all - of the time I don't need painkillers. I'll probably be taking some tonight.

Still rationing computer time to some extent. Extended periods working on graphics software are still not a starter.

Fear not; I haven't forgotten you.

111 Tauri (Karres)

AD-M-VQQAQAA F8V (-14.30, -1.80, -2.60)

Overview

The 111 Tauri system has Karres, one of three garden worlds in the sector with one of the closest biomes to T-prime. It is at the Aferas end of the main trade route and has a substantial Aferasi minority population. Settled early on in the development of the region, Karres was the seat of signing the Neutral Zone treaty and has a significant Aferasi minority population.

Karres is unusual in that it has a system-wide federal government with significant sovereign power; individual states maintain substantial autonomy but the Federal Commonwealth has jurisdiction over foreign policy and interplanetary and international matters.

The two major political factions at commonwealth level are colloquially known as 'Kilts' (Conservatives) and 'Trews' (Progressives) due to an accident of historical fashion where faux-Scottish Highland dress became fashionable for a period. Kilts hung around for nearly a century as formal wear and became associated with conservative politics.

Karres has a large (approximately 15%) minority Afereasi population, and Aferasi social norms have had a significant influence on the local culture. One particularly visible manifestation of this is a traditional dagger or short sword known as a Shang, which is often worn as an accessory in formal dress, even by Human residents. The federal constitution also legally enshrines a right to bear arms.

System

Isperos (A)Large rocky world inside the habitable zone, tidelocked to the primary. The world has no magnetic field and the solar wind has stripped all atmosphere. Surface gravity 0.7G. There is no permanent settlement or industry on the world.
Qionglai (D)Small rocky world inside the habitable zone with a trace atmosphere consisting primarily of Carbon Dioxide. Surface gravity 0.45G. Economic viability is limited to mining and solar smelting in the polar regions and there is a transient population of approximately 40,000.
Karres (M)M-class garden world, one of the closest to a T-prime biome in known space. Surface gravity 0.97G. The world is famous for its charismatic megafauna, in particular the iconic Bandersnatch. Population 1.4 billion.
- Isperos (A)Largest of two moons of Karres, this has a surface gravity of approximately 0.15G. Extensive settlement and low-G industry has been seeded on Isperos for nearly two centuries now, and the moon now has a total permanent settlement of approximately 9 million.
- Hokuito (A)The smaller of the two moons of Karres, this is a captured body in an eccentric orbit with an inclination of 14°. Surface gravity is 0.04G. There is little of economic value on Hokuto, although some older mining, ISRU and prospecting facilities house a small Smeg population of approximately 20,000.
Ruvia (V)Sitting outside the habitable zone of the system, Ruvia still retains a magnetic field and is slightly oxygen-poor, resulting in an atmosphere consisting largely of a methane/ammonia mix with a small percentage of Carbon Dioxide; surface gravity is 0.8G.
Ruvia has a significant industrial base due to the abundance of hydrocarbons and organics in the environment, and supports a population of approximately 25 million.
- Xinimi (A)Small rocky moon with a surface gravity of approximately 0.12G. The moon is host to some mining and prospecting operations but has little other economic activity. Population is estimated at approximately 10,000.

Yes. I'm in the process of coming out of hibernation with this; while in such, I spent a little time thrashing out a couple of sectors in some depth and planning out the surrounding region. These are just clips from a onenote collection, but should be coherent enough.

Chi 1 Orionis (Kinohe)

YQ-P-QQARQA G0V (-5.6, -1.3, -0.4)

Kinohe was the subject of a terraforming attempt but the biome never fully matured, leaving an atmosphere with concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane sufficient to cause a significant greenhouse effect. Equatorial regions have temperatures of up to 75C, making them uninhabitable for practical purposes, although extremophile organisms introduced to form the biome still thrive there.

Habitable zones around the polar regions support a population of approximately 80 million. The world is subject to ongoing terraforming events, but this process was substantially interrupted by the dissolution of the Leyland-Futanari corporation. Kinohe is substantially under-developed economically and heavily reliant on Terran subsidy, which has been maintained to offset political influence from Denaspar.

Freya (Y)Named as a pun on Venus, Freya is a hot, greenhouse world with a corrosive atmosphere primarily composed of carbon dioxide with concentrations of sulphur oxides. It has a surface gravity of 0.9G and no permanent habitation.

GJ 1105 (Ezra's Belt)

A-I-RDQDR A M4V -7.1, +0.2, +4.0

Ezra's Belt is in the Tannhauser sector, close to Denaspar. It has no central government, with most settlements run either collectively or by a corporation. Some quasi-state polities exist within the system. The economy is mostly mining with some industry. Food production is mainly through hydroponics and vat-grown protein. Total population of the system is approximately 40 million. The system is notable for its large Smeg population.

Pushchino (A)Rocky vacuum world tidelocked to the primary. Surface gravity 0.25G.
Babylon (I)Population: 24 million. This sits just outside the primary's goldilocks zone, and is tidelocked to the primary. The dark side of the world has large ice deposits and is the major source of fuel from ISRU plants. Surface gravity 0.4G
- Freeside StationOld LFC facility now forming permanent habitation. It is a significant transit hub for free traders.
The Belt (R)This is the main belt and is particularly rich in minerals. Prospecting, mining and some manufacturing take place in the belt. Population: 14 million. Some ISRU within the belt.
Epona (D)This has a trace CO2 atmosphere and a surface gravity of 0.6g. Some moisture is locked up in ice caps. The world has some mining industry and supporting industry. Population: <1m.
Grabthar (Q)This is the only gas giant in the system. It has three large moons and some smaller ones, plus a spectacular ring system.
- Dvorak (H)Thin ammonia/hydrocarbon atmosphere with a surface gravity of 0.35g. The planet has a liquid core due to tidal friction from the primary. Some mining and prospecting activity takes place on the moon. Population (est): 200,000 spread amongst various mining outposts.
- Nessus (A)Vacuum world with no permanent habitation. Nessus is locked in a 2:1 tidal resonance with Dvorak.
- Ixion (T)Thin hydrocarbon atmosphere with a surface gravity of 0.5g. Locked in a 2:1 tidal resonance with Nessus. No permanent habitation, although some prospecting activity is taking place on the world. A small monitoring station has been installed in orbit recently.
Enopius (D)Trace CO2 atmosphere with a surface gravity of 0.4G. No permanent habitation although some prospecting activity is taking place.
Outer Belt (R)This is another asteroid belt, with little prospecting and mining activity. Distance from the primary limits the economic viability.

Gliese 109 (Bashai)

-N-RQQ M3V (-5.9, +3.0, -3.9)

The Gl 109 system is a dwarf with a tidelocked world and two gas giants in the outer system. The innermost world, Bashai, is tidelocked with an indigenous biome in the twilight zone containing microbiotic and photosynthetic life. The atmosphere is not strictly breathable, containing significant amounts of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

The presence of an indigenous biome normally precludes terraforming efforts as the biome tends to overwhelm introduced species before they can proliferate, making it impossible to initiate the process. While Carbon Monoxide is only present in trace amounts, it is still capable of accumulating toxicity and air scrubbing and overpressure systems and personal respirators are necessary for living.

The local life forms are commercially interesting because of the large variety of exotic protein and other bioactive and organic chemicals that can be extracted.

The system is a gateway to the Sol and Haven sectors, and has a significant diplomatic presence from both polities.

Bashai (N)Nominally a garden world, Bashai is tide locked to the primary with a biome sustaining primitive live in the planet's twilight zone. The atmosphere is toxic to humans on long-term exposure due to trace amounts of carbon monoxide. Local harvesting and processing of microbial life and supporting industries supports a permanent population of approximately 200,000.

Gliese 174 (Lushun)

Z-M-RQQFA K3V (-12.9, +0.4, -3.8)

The GL 174 system was an early terraforming candidate with the Lushun world reaching its arable phase and being certified for open colonisation 240 years ago. Even before terraforming, the system was a major transit hub and there is extensive infrastructure in the outer system supporting this, with a substantial amount of settlement and industry in the outer system.

The primary is a BY Draconis variable, and is prone to sunspot and chromospheric disturbances, which cause major radiation storms. As a part of the terraforming process, a constellation of 2T magnetic solar wind deflection satellites is installed in halo orbit around the L1 position of Lushun.

The terraforming process is considered successful, and the planet itself has a biome that is expected to mature to a capacity of 5 billion. The current population of Lushun itself is approximately 350 million with a further 3 million living in other parts of the system.

Gliese 192 (Hamashi)

X--QF M5V (-10.5, -0.8, -2.5)

Hamashi started as a transit hub for traffic to Karres. The system now has a permanent settlement of a few million and has started to develop an independent economy off the support industry for the traffic. Approximately 80% of the trade between Sol and Aferasi space goes through Hamashi.

Habitation began around several facilities, which grew into independent cities. After the collapse of the LFC the cities formed their own governments. The Shanxi-Tripura corporation, formed as a consortium by the city states and a group of external investors to build the Tripura A and B domiciles, has started to take a more pushy role in system politics, which is causing friction with the city states.

The old Zahir station was about to be mothballed but has remained open, supported by the city states as a hedge against the power play by the STC, and is popular with free traders.

The system is a small dwarf star with a small tidelocked world in a close orbit, a single gas giant with a system containing three major satellites and a small rocky world in a third orbit.

Gliese 211 (Rhaquos)

AA-L-RQDQQRQ K1V (-11.1, +4.4, +2.5)

Rhaquos in the Isinor sector, in the neutral zone. It has some small seas near the polar regions, covering less than 10% of the planet's total surface. The seas have very high salt concentrations, meaning that little but extremophile life lives in them. However, the seas do power weather patterns around the north polar region, bringing enough precipitation to the areas around them to support agriculture with relatively minor terraforming work. Most of the rest of the world's surface is arid or semi-arid land with very little surface water.

A lot of fossils can be found all over the world, including in the arid regions. This suggests that the world was much less arid up to about 0.7 million years ago when there was a major extinction event. The world was the home to a civilisation called the Amarantin, which are thought to have died out in the same ecological disaster that rendered the planet arid.

Seneca (A)
Seneca is a small rocky planet in the innermost orbit of the primary. It has no permanent habitation, although there are some abandoned mining and research outposts. Occasional prospecting operations are carried out as the world is somewhat rich in rare earths.
Chasma (A)This is a larger vacuum world just inside the habitable zone of the primary. It has a small population of independent prospectors and miners, numbering about 10,000. Some quasi-permanent settlement exists to support this industry.
Rhaquos (L)Rhaquos has a small area of arable land near the north pole and a breathable atmosphere. With a surface gravity of 0.91 G, it is habitable to humans. Most of the surface away from the polar regions is arid, although the polar regions have weather systems with significant, although sparse, rain. Some other regions on the world have subsurface aquifers that can sustain agriculture and a few sterile high-salinity oceans. Population: approximately 70 million.
Inner Belt (R)The inner belt has some mining operations in it with semi-permanent habitats supporting the mining. Population: Approximately 100,000.
Elysium (Q)Elysium is a small-ish gas giant with a ring system and two major satellites
- Hormel (A)Hormel is a rocky vacuum world with no magnetic field. Due to radiation from Elysium it is considered too dangerous to inhabit. There is no permanent habitation.
- Triffid (H)Triffid has ice caps composed primarily of ammonia, methane and water, with some water ice covering the rest of the world. A trace atmosphere is largely composed of ammonia and methane. - Hubble (V)The innermost satellite of Ophir, Hubble has a surface gravity of 0.6g and a dense atmosphere composed primarily of ammonia and methane.. The surface is covered in hydrocarbon-rich ice. Some surveying work has been done, but the distance from the inner belt makes the world marginally economic.
- Naktong (T)Naktong is a small-ish moon with a surface gravity of 0.4g and a hydrocarbon rich atmosphere. It is considered uneconomic due to the distance from the primary and there is no permanent settlement.
- Dolfus (G)Dolfus is a small satellite with a surface gravity of 0.25g and a trace ammonia/methane atmosphere. There is no permanent settlement.
- Duna (A)Duna is a small rocky moon with a surface gravity of 0.15g and no atmosphere. It was captured by Ophir and has a highly inclined orbit. The geochemistry of Duna is very different from the rest of the Ophir system and it is very mineral rich. Some prospecting and research work has taken place but the distance makes it economically marginal. There is a small transient population of prospectors and occasional mining operations.
Arsinoe (Q)Arsinoe is a small gas giant with two satellites.
- Rineheart (A)Small vacuum world with a surface gravity of 0.35g.
- Scholes (D)Small world with a surface gravity of 0.4g and a trace CO2 atmosphere. A significant amount of snow, mainly CO2 an Water sits on the surface. There is no permanent habitation due to the distance from the primary.
Outer Belt (R)This is another asteroid belt but distance from the primary limits the economic viability.
Ister (Q)Ister is a large gas giant, verging on a brown dwarf. It sits about 1/20 of a light year from the primary.
