I’m sure they had to change it.

I don't like the art nearly as much as the Jon Hodgson art, myself.

Yeah, I was just going to say that. He really captured the spirit of Tolkien I thought.

I'm not yet sure how to react to that cover art. It's not "bad", I don't really get a Midde Earth vibe from it though.

Does anyone know if they are going to be reprinting/redoing the whole line?

For those of you who never saw it, the cover art mock-up for the original Cubicle-7 2e is below. The one thing that is definitely better about the new cover is that there is more room for all the elements to breathe. Too font heavy on the top for the original.

I still prefer this one, because it at least *feels* more like Tolkien to me. But so it goes.

The new one reminds me more of the art style for some of the Dragon Age stuff.

They probably know old farts like us will buy it but they want to expand the audience. The new artwork almost had this cyberpunk aesthetic to it as well. I’m sure the interior layout will be spectacular, especially after seeing what they did with Vaesen.

What exactly happened with the One Ring? Cubicle 7 made a second edition and shortly after it was moved to Fria Ligan? I read a while ago they had canceled it, but I didn't know they actually had released copies of 2E.
Will this be the same as the 2E Cubicle released/would have released.

They never released copies although there was some confusion due to it being set up at certain online stores. I don’t think it got past the mock-up stage.

My favorites were the old MURPs art by Angus McBride.

No one has captured it as well as Angus McBride and the old MERPS stuff. Those covers were like paintings.

So with that in mind, is it the One Ring from C7s system? Or is it going to be FL's system?

It’s a true 2nd Edition to the system used in The One Ring through Cubicle 7. Cubicle 7 was really just a distributor for the previous edition, if I understand correctly, they didn’t actually own anything.

That is a good question. Also curious how much of the 2E work carried over from C7 or was it a total redo. There was a bit of wailing and gnashing of teeth over some of the decisions C7 was talking about making to the material.

I picked up most of the TOR material before it was gone, so it would take something pretty different and awesome to make me go for 2E.

I am also excited for this even though I only have one player who is into Tolkien.

The art looks stunning. I bought the first edition book but never got around to playing it. I don't think I'll grab this, one of my players might though. I'm assuming it'll use the same system, which seemed a little mediocre.

The system will be compatible with some minor updates. Personally, I found the system to be great, so I am pleased with that.

The setting focus will shift from Rhovanion to Eriador, with the Shore featuring in a starter set to be released as a part of this KS.

The C7 2e cover art was meh. It wasn’t Hodgson and it had Gandalf leading a completely different Fellowship? It might be a quick trip, but his calendar during those years was kinda full.

The new cover art looks like an edgy adult imprint graphic novel. When you combine the style with backdrop in the interior shots it looks better.

I only read it, so I would say your opinion on this one carries more weight. My personal preference would have been that they port it over to the year zero engine.

That could be interesting. So they won't just be rehashing what has been covered to date. I wonder if they will be able to reprint the 1E books in the future for those who were not able to get them. Would be a shame if the 1E material gets stuck in a limbo with C7 owning the printing rights, and FL having the license.

I'm glad they are sticking with the same system, as it seems to capture the vibe of LotR but it would be smart if FL did something like Adventures in Middle Earth with another system to catch those who want a more traditional RPG system.

I was hoping there would be a bit more gap between this and the Everway Kickstarter, but anyway, incoming....

As a continuation of 1e, the books will be cover ground not covered in 1e such as Moria, Gondor, Western Eriador and the Shire.
Yup and after a point I was able to translate One Ring stuff into AiME by comparing and contrasting the details.

Not sure I need to kickstart this, but I like the idea that the line will be continuing.

It's a good idea basing Bree as a kick off zone, moving out into the other areas of Eriador, it feels much more like the LOTR book that way.

I'm glad they aren't doubling up too much

I wish they did a dual kickstarter of TOR and/or AiME, as I greatly preferred the later

I have the 1E Humble Bundle and the Adventures in Middle Earth Humble Bundle. I may or may not pick up the 2E Kickstarter.

We did play a campaign of Adventures in Middle Earth about a couple of years ago. It was fun, but there were certain nuances we found interesting in the original rules which we decided we might look into if we were to run another campaign. A lot of the setting material was very similar.

With this new edition, the general hope is for some support with the Fria Logan specialty of well supported, sandboxy, map based play - which Middle Earth is a good setting for. For me, this would be more of a ‘keeper’ game than AiME (although I still have all the PDFs for that).

The "Effekt" podcast #149 has an interview with the designer Nepitello that goes over some of the recent history of the game and switch to Free League. I found it very interesting, although it doesn't have too much detail on the differences between editions.

Where did they leave off with regards to the Rhovanion campaign? Did they make it all the way to the final battle in the North?

It’s interesting to compare The One Ring to LotRO since they both have the same job - come up with all the rest of the stuff happening in the world other than the Fellowship Quest. For example, the latest expansion out is War of the Three Peaks, which takes you into Gundabad.

They say they’re going to get closer to the Twilight of the Third Age, but this time in Eriador. I wonder what they’re going to be involved with. Angmar I’m guessing, perhaps following up on some of the Angmar stuff in the Rhovanion campaign. Maybe Umbar? Sauron’s minions getting up to no good in Forochel?

The system’s very cool, but not quite for me, but the setting stuff has been awesome, must haves for Tolkien nuts I think.

Wow!

If I hadn’t already invested heavily in Adventures in Middle Earth, as well as a dozen other RPGs I’ve acquired these past 2 years (including the Free League Alien RPG), I’d be all over this.

I haven’t even played most of the stuff on my shelves. This hobby is too rich!

Time to focus on what I have, I guess. I’ll wait for the AiME releases (if any).
