"Is there a usual muster point here somewhere? I would imagine the king and those three farms haven't been sitting on their hands, although I suppose its also possible they may have already been defeated" muses Dougal.

Illian uses his herbal lore to try to figure out if he can recall the possible source of the sweetness in the smoke.
Illan takes in controlled breaths, but he can tell pretty quickly it's mead wort used for sweetening ales and beers and long ago by the druids for concoctions to double a man's strength.

OOC: Apologies! Was busy and only just got the time to sit down and fill out the map

"No...now's the time I feel. We could deal a decisive strike against them or at least get a very good idea of their true strength. Wouldn't be right leaving it only to surface dwellers anyway."

"I hope all of you fare well. It's a tough foe you face"

Dougal, Brian and their companions head into the center of the room upon which a mighty gust of wind fires them toward the capstone. As the King said though, the capstone is but a facade and the pair suddenly find salty sand and shells being smushed into their faces as the gust pushes them up through layers of beach material. One final push and they are flung clear onto into the open air and land back on the beach sand.

Almost everybody is covered head to toe in soggy sand. Garos wiggles his tail and head and quickly tosses off in Brian's direction. Dogtos however seems spotless and unfurls a map he possesses within his jacket.

"Here gentlemen is the Kingdom of Cairbre"

OOC: On the Map "Local Lord Farm" just means a large farm owned by one of the noble families. A kingdom had 3-7 such families on average. "Norse Bay" is where the Norse ships are
OOC: Dare I ask what "Demon-infested waters" might mean:shade:? And can we get some help at the Queen Meibh's Grave?

IC:
"I never said to leave it to us surface dwellers. We actually would like the help", Brian reminds him.

"If I was routed and looking for help , I'd be running north-east", Brian mutters. Then he shakes off his own sand in the direction of Garos.
"Tomb and graves, and old gods all around. The Northerners won't like approaching those, they respect the slumber of the dead...usually. Then again, maybe the locals have other ideas, or simply don't think like me".

"Is there a usual muster point here somewhere? I would imagine the king and those three farms haven't been sitting on their hands, although I suppose its also possible they may have already been defeated" muses Dougal.
"There'd be a few" Colla says kneeling down next to the map "War time gatherings would be mostly at the King's place, but if they've been defeated they'd retreat back to the woods around the Well of the Old Gods"

OOC: Dare I ask what "Demon-infested waters" might mean:shade:? And can we get some help at the Queen Meibh's Grave?
OOC: I'll do this as an IC question that Colla will answer.

"Christian serpents haunt those waters" Colla answers "The leader is a true beast. Able to smash a boat with but a flick of his tail.

As for Méibh..."

He looks at the Dolmen warrior who stares straight back at him. The Dolmen warrior then speaks.

"She would need a reason to help. We rarely disturb her. It's been a long time since she was active and she won't like seeing any of us older ones"

"If I was routed and looking for help , I'd be running north-east", Brian mutters. Then he shakes off his own sand in the direction of Garos.
"Hmm, that'd be a decent tactical choice" Colla nods "As I said to himself..." he gestures to Dougal "...retreat is often to the woods, but of course who knows. Might have wise to split their forces and separate to other locations. Most of the poorer farmers live out that way"

Garos laughs as Brian shakes the sand at him and scurries a small bit up the beach taking in the fresh salt air.

"Tomb and graves, and old gods all around. The Northerners won't like approaching those, they respect the slumber of the dead...usually. Then again, maybe the locals have other ideas, or simply don't think like me".
"Good point about the Northerners. They seem to have a strong fear of grave sites. So they certainly won't approach them. Any locals would be safe there. As would we if we needed time to plan"

"Hmm, well, I think our first concern here is that we need to know where the Norse are and what they've been doing. Perhaps a scouting trip up to the bay to have a poke around? We can try to determine numbers and disposition, and maybe even get a feel for where some of the locals are or whether or not there's been a battle yet. The forest on this peninsula would be a good bet for some hit and run fighting against a more numerous opponent as well. I have no desire to face them in the open field, not unless we find allies. If we split up one group could always go in search of the king and the local forces as well. If we're going to split up we should pick a time and place to rendezvous." says Dougal.

IC; "Well, yes. If we let them dictate the time and place...let's just say we might be in trouble", Brian smiles. "So let's not do that".

"Well, gentlemen*, now we should visit their last known location, shouldn't we? Let's get moving!"

*OOC: What would be the equivalent in Irish Celtic? I'm now curious.

OOC: Are we splitting to look for friendly forces as well at the same time, or are we doing those scouting and then that sequentially? We have enough bodies to split ...

OOC: Why is this OOC? Suggest it IC and we can talk.
But I'd say we should stay together to keep the GM sane:shade:.

But I'd say we should stay together to keep the GM sane:shade:.
OOC: Well, you just kind of announced IC that we were leaving, so I was trying to find out what the plan was was before I jumped back into the fiction. I have no problem staying together though, works for me. We can always split later in if the situation warrants.

IC: "Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to slay we go..." sings Dougal softly, as the group gets under way. He'll do the standard weapon and harness check as they start.

"Let's stick to the woods as much as we can whilst creeping up on the enemy here. shall we? No point in getting seen before we've managed to do anything." says Dougal, thoughtfully. "That and screening our approach with hills and the like..."

Everything seems to be in order.

"Let's stick to the woods as much as we can whilst creeping up on the enemy here. shall we? No point in getting seen before we've managed to do anything." says Dougal, thoughtfully. "That and screening our approach with hills and the like..."
The rough character of the forest can be seen easily from the beach itself. It's up hill from the coast and though sparse enough to easily walk through it would be difficult to spot Dougal, Brian and their group from the shore as it is thicker near the coast.

The group proceeds through the forest at a quick pace as it is even and clear ground.

About half an hour into the walk they get a clear view of the bay as an early morning mist clears from its surface. Across the bay from them, at the entrance to an inlet leading to the king's residence, the group can see a collection of Norse longships.

Garos scuttles up a nearby tree for a short bit before coming back down.

"Nine ships in total. I'd say you're looking at twenty-ish men per ship. A few in very heavy looking armour" Garos says with a little bit of nerves in his voice.

OOC: You lads are the Black X (though this need not be your precise location of course, you can be more inland if you wish), Norse ships at the Red X.

*OOC: What would be the equivalent in Irish Celtic? I'm now curious.
OOC: "A uaisle" = "Nobles!" being semi-formal. "A fheara breátha" = "Fine lads!" being more familiar.

Dougal counts on his fingers and looks slightly pained. "9 ships by 20 men ... carry the 2 ... that's, um.." he pauses briefly, "well it's a fucking lot anyway."

OOC: "A uaisle" = "Nobles!" being semi-formal. "A fheara breátha" = "Fine lads!" being more familiar.
OOC: A uaisle then. I was going for semi-formal, though the formality itself was a joke. This time, though, it's clearly an appeal to be frank!

IC: "I don' like those odds. What did you say about the Queen needing a reason to offer her help? I think now is a prime moment to explain, a uaisle!"

IC: "I don' like those odds. What did you say about the Queen needing a reason to offer her help? I think now is a prime moment to explain, a uaisle!"
The Dolmen warrior answers.

"Getting involved in a surface war didn't end so well for her last time and she has lost so much of her original territory by now she'd be taking a big risk getting involved. But the Norse have rare treasures I'm sure and possessing the unusual and rare was worth more to her than land"

"Wouldn't the arrival of that Hemidallr mean she stands to lose even more territory?", Brian asked.
"And is there any history between the three of you?"

"Wouldn't the arrival of that Hemidallr mean she stands to lose even more territory?", Brian asked.
The Dolmen Warrior clears his throat.

"That's a good angle if you want to convince her I'd say....though she might be hoping the Norse stay away from her tomb kingdom given their fear of the dead. The land above she'll certainly lose..."

"And is there any history between the three of you?"
He sighs.

"I have history with her aye! I'm a relative of people she didn't like and the son of somebody she really really didn't like. Distant history in this time of Christ, but hatred doesn't die between us ancients"

Colla looks at Brian after this.

"My father's kingdom have little history with her. During the days on the surface she was our overlord. My great grandparents fought for her the odd time. I never met her though. Unlike us Sidhe she actually died before the retreat underground"

OOC: I'm starting to suspect who we've got here.

IC: Brian looked at the Dolmen Warrior solemnly.
"I won't hide your presence, though. Well, let's go find those Norsemen first; then we'll see if a trip to her tomb would be necessary. But I'm betting on 'yes', call it a...gut feeling, if you wish!"

"Isn't that some delicious drama," laughs Dougal. "That's a bridge we can cross, or burn, when we come to it I suppose," he adds. "I agree, lets find out what's happening here, and then we can decide what additional allies and plans might make sense."

Illian stands right outside of the doorway of the hut and announces cheerfully, "Do I smell brewing happening?"

Colla replies to Brian and Dougal.

"Well there's enough of them on those boats, but there might be more inland. Where were you thinking about looking?"

"I agree, lets find out what's happening here, and then we can decide what additional allies and plans might make sense."
"Meeting the king at his estate would probably get us a fairly clear picture of things, assuming his place hasn't been taken and we're not walking into a now Norse stronghold. The local lords might be at their farms as well.

Even the common folk might now the state of the place...in much less detail though, they'd rarely be off their farms."

"I was thinking about finding more details on their forces' positions", Brian clarified. "Meeting the king might be preferable in this regard, though it would only net us what our allies would know. So while I'm all for it, it doesn't hurt to look ourselves...and we have to kidnap a Norseman, too".

"Well since we know some are out there in the lake, we should find where they're docked perhaps?

Or were you thinking of dramatically raiding a boat?" Colla says excited before catching himself "Well maybe that would be a bit daft"

Illian stands right outside of the doorway of the hut and announces cheerfully, "Do I smell brewing happening?"
"Yes you do" a voice calls from within. Illan can tell it's a young woman from the voice, although it sounds strained. From where he stands he sees the woman is wearing a heavy black coat of some sort. Straining a bit he sees it's possibly feathered.

"I was thinking of finding where they are docked, and possibly raiding a boat - depending on whether they're guarding them well", Brian clarified.

"Best course of action should be to scout around the bay. Should be simple enough until we get to that inlet leading to the king's house. The water there is fairly shallow, just waist height in fact. The problem is we'll be obvious enough while wading across if we do"

"If you wanted to be totally concealed we could head a good bit inland before the inlet, cross the water downstream and then back into the woods and toward the shore. We'd pass fairly close to the king's place on that path just to say"

"Sounds like a much better plann, unless anybody objects. We should totally do that!"

(Sorry, I haven't been in this subforum much since most of the games I was in stalled.)

Illian bows. "Greetings. You may call me Mr. Potions. I would love to observe and learn from a fellow brewer. However, my companions and I are looking for other of our companions. Have any other strangers stopped by here recently? If so and if you could point me in their direction, I would be very appreciative."

Séadna Séadna hasn't been online since 17 Feb. Anybody know what's going on with him?

It just occurred to me that I might have his email from google sheets. Let me see and ping him an email.

Nary a squeak so far. I think he said something about a dodgy internet connection at one point. I hope it's that and not something more serious.

I think I can say with conviction that we all hope it's not anything more serious:thumbsup:!

I have a cow-orker based in Ireland at the moment who doesn't have a terribly high opinion of the internet service there, so I'm quietly hoping that it's technical issues.

I sincerely hope that his opinion of the Irish Internet is well-founded:thumbsup:!
