We made characters for the Alien campaign mode game last night. The mission is to further survey worlds earmarked 80+ years ago in the initial exploration of the sector and do routine maintenance on sector communication satellites.

The ship is the USCSS Halifax and to go with the NPC crew the players made:
  • Botanist/Field Scientist
  • Ship's Captain (Former Marine Officer)
  • Chief Medical Officer
  • Corporate Stooge (we rolled up a random corporate title of "Relational Functionality Manager")

The Corporate Stoege has some really great special abilities to choose from. I was lucky enough to have a player lean into the role just enough to be annoying but not enough for the others to decide to blow his brains out.

I have done literally nothing to prepare for tomorrow's game. Might be an "E-Rocker makes all this shit up off the top of his head" session. Which I'm fine with doing occasionally, but wouldn't want to make a habit of it.

Seat-of-my-pants sessions have been some of my best. Also some of my worst. My natural brilliance responds to a summoning if it feels like it.

It's typically worked out fine when I've done it in the past. There are moments where I'll be floundering for a direction, but that can happen even if I do extensive prep. And my current group is pretty proactive, so I'm feeling fairly confident about it.

Last week I totally didn't make time to prep my Traveller session. They were already in a cave, so a few minutes of quick cave drawing under the cover of darkness (using Roll20 hide/reveal) and browsing the tokens to find some skeletons. I placed a couple critters I need to stat up for next time...

Last week for RQ, I took a few minutes to find a ruin from Dyson Logos's maps and used hide and reveal, and then after some scouting, some minotaurs have been revealed. Tonight we see what they do...

Sounds like someone on the team is getting incapacitating stomach parasites. I hope they drink plenty of fluids. :hehe:

You do, bookshelves yet? Or toy display cases high enough to keep a 6' long on hind legs dog away from them?

More scouting out the ruins. Found a temple of Thanatar but haven't seen anything in it yet. So far just looking through windows. The new player asked about odors, specifically midden odors, so I had to do some quick thinking about how populated the ruin is...

HEPCATS Episode 30: Finally, a Wedding!
3-5 December, Rhino Year
RL Date 4 February 2021
Present: Ayu, Baron von Braun, N0-5R, Pierre Delecto, Zera

Flashback 1: Ayu wins her gladiator battle by using her knife to pry the face off her robotic opponents and then reprogam them so they have a dance party instead of a fight.

Flashback 2: Ayu has her private interview with Princess Bluela. The Princess feels that Ayu isn’t as into the competition as the rest of Diet Greg and wants to know what her deal is. Ayu has concerns about marriage being a big commitment and wants to know what Bluela thinks the most important parts of a marriage are. Bluela says that communication is key, and mutual attraction is also very important. Ayu agrees and says as long as they can have a flexible arrangement, she’s fine with getting married. The princess does a backbend to show how flexible she is.

Presently: Zed the ooze monster shows up, wearing a hat that says “Press.” He announces himself as “Zed from Independent Food News” and asks the team for the opinion of saffron in cookies. Baron says he doesn’t know about cookies, but saffron is good in blood.

The song contest happens. Diet Greg’s entries are much more impressive than those of the other contestants. Princess Bluela is particularly disappointed in Arkon Zipperhead, who took a classical poem and set it to some public domain music, rather than creating an original song.

There’s an intermission, while the princess confers with the judges about whom she will marry.

Zera buys the galaxy’s largest funnel cake, as well as the galaxy’s second-largest funnel cake. She definitely ate the first one, but I think she may have shared the second one with Baron’s servants?

The “Marry the Princess” competition ends with a reverse rose ceremony, where all the contestants have roses, and the princess takes them away from the competitors she does not wish to marry. At the conclusion, Diet Greg is the last team standing. Jenny makes everyone fancy new clothes for the wedding.

A space Elvis impersonator shows up to perform the wedding, and the team realizes it's their old teammate, Kurt Warlock, in disguise! They invite him to also join the marriage, and, after mild resistance, he agrees. The princess is cool with it.

As soon as the group is collectively pronounced spouses, Ayu announces “Time for the orgy!” I guess they skipped the reception.

The team shows up the next morning for the post-wedding brunch. Ayu is exhausted and dehydrated from the wedding night, so someone offers her some android-ade (like Gatorade, but for androids), which makes her feel better.

Franceska gets stretched into light and disappears. Someone takes over the broadcast and says, “I am Virgil Herfendorfer, Speed Pirate of the Space Lanes, and I just hit you with the Georgia Ghost Ripper! I don’t know what a Georgia Ghost Ripper is, but I hit you with it! You can’t catch me!”

Pierre uses his mind powers to instill the idea in Virgil Herfendorfer that he wants to come back, land his spaceship, and talk it out. Zera spends a long time trying to pronounce “Herfendorfer.”

Virgil Herfendorder confesses that he ghostnapped Franceska because he had been hired to do so by Frank, who still wants Franceska to power his spacsehip engines. Frank can be found on planet X1. Pierre asks how many people are on Planet X1.

Pierre discreetly shoots Virgil in the face with a psychic bolt, killing the shit out of him. Only the team knows Pierre was responsible, though.

Ayu hacks the Georgia Ghost Ripper, freeing Franceska.

Team Mad Science says that with a little work, they can convert the Georgia Ghost Ripper into a Ghost Amplifier. Pierre is excited to have a bigger ghost.

Pierre admonishes the team that they should “go fuck up this guy” who sent the ghostnapper. Zera isn’t sure, since “We’ve all done bad things. We all have skeletons buried in our backyards.” Knowing Zera, it’s unlikely that she’s speaking metaphorically.

The team gets on the same page and heads for the space lanes!

To be continued….

XP 5, plus an additional 10 for those who wrote songs

Hmmm... since tonight's session will be Episode 31, perhaps it will have something to do with ice cream flavors... :trigger:

(explanation for non-US folks, as I don't know how widespread Baskin-Robbins is: the ice cream store Baskin-Robbin is famous for having 31 flavors of ice cream. They actually have far more than 31 flavors, but there are 31 on offer at a time).

And it tastes like.....DOOM!
Doom and butterscotch!

I'm a bit underwhelmed with pretty much all post Ben-and-Jerry's ice cream. It's all either filled with gravel or way too much chocolate.

The entirety of my notes for tonight's session, which take up all of 4 lines on a 3x5 notecard:

  • In medias res spaceship chase vs. Fred
  • Zed calls about honeymoon food
  • Agent Zee calls for an update
  • 31 flavors??

(Minor pointless rant: it's in medias res, with an "s" on the end, not "in media res").

Currently just perusing my CONAN 2D20 core book and my Mythras core book.

Really digging both of these at present.

Need to do some quick prep for my next session of CONAN tomorrow.

What characters did they make for Conan?

In the course of running Episode 31 last night, the number of times that Baron's player rolled two dice and had one of them come up "3" and the other come up "1" was truly odds-defying, and the one time I asked a player to roll a d100, it also came up 31.

They break apart and go back together pretty easily....
Yea, back when they were new and we first found out about that, the fun was to rotate a piece so it couldn't be solved... :-)

I'm sure you could also Google for instructions...

HEPCATS Episode 31: Honeymoon Spaceship Acquisition
5-6 December, Rhino Year
RLD 18 February 2021
Present: Baron von Braun, N0-5R, Zera

Part 1

GREG the spaceship is en route to Planet X1 so the team can confront Frank about his attempts to kidnap their ghost friend, Franceska.

"Zed, from Independent Food News,” the ooze monster that the team convinced to become a food journalist instead of a conqueror, calls. He’s unfamiliar with honeymoons and still just learning about humanoid food, so he wants to know what the team thinks would be the best honeymoon food. Zera says “the stickier the better.”

N0-5R says that, although it’s not his honeymoon, he thinks that breakfast food or brunch food, "like pancakes or French toast," would be a good choice. Discussion ensues regarding whether the difference between breakfast food and brunch food is the food itself, or just the time of day you eat it. Zera wants to know, if you wake up at 1 pm, does your first meal still count as breakfast?

Zed: “I’ll check with my editor.”
Zera: “I’ll wait.”
Zed: “I didn’t mean right now.”

I just saw that they make kits! All of this is so above my pay grade...

How quickly can you buy a new one?

Not quick enough. I got this one off eBay for $10. The local store has them for $25 or close to it. I'm watching videos on how to solve this. Making a daisy, right trigger, left trigger.... ugh....

I’m running a Conan game using Mythras for rules and the 2d20 books for setting. I’m prepping for my next session this Saturday. Where is your campaign set? Mine takes place in the Border Kingdoms.

Do tell. Maybe I can use your ideas.

I have uploaded PDFs showing how to create a RQ Strike Rank Tracker, how to add maps and how to add a RuneQuest character sheet.

Let me know if they are wrong, don't work or don't make sense.
