What are y'all up to these days?

Best Selling RPGs - Available Now @ DriveThruRPG.com
Overall, the adult group had better tactics and decisions, but they made a serious error during chargen - no one chose to play a medic.
Players in my (currently on hiatus) Genius: the Transgression games like to solve their problems by hitting them. But in the current game, no-one invested any points in fighty skills. I gave them a meatshield NPC who was also crap at fighting but had a much larger capacity to absorb punishment. He needs it, because one of the PCs carries a gun he's terrible with, and occasionally shoots him in the back by mistake.

A completist will leave themself no choice. I know a guy who had one fishing boat and a wife. Now, he has three fishing boats and a "utility cruiser." whatever that is, and no wife. He coulda been an RPG completist for a lot less money.

I think imma start referring to my forever girlfriend as my "utility cruiser", and I'll let y'all know how that works out.

Gaming has been a mixed bag lately, but looking up.

I disbanded my online Call of Cthulhu game. I'd never really gelled with that group of players (one in particular is among the most negative people I've had the misfortune of gaming with), and the online format kept getting in the way of achieving any sort of immersion into the horror. Kind of a shame, cause I'd spent a lot of time preparing the Arkham sandbox, but I'm mostly relieved not to have to worry about it anymore.

But on a positive note, I'm finally getting an in person group together again. Got a couple friends who I used to game with that are ready to get back together, and I've got a coworker who wants to join, so that should be fun. I'm going to try, once more, to get Masks of Nyarlathotep going. Ordered the HPLHS box set and am just trying to decide where on the Classic to Pulp meter I want to run this.

My players rarely have had the knack of having one character take all the damage.. Even in theater of the mind, it is very difficult to manage.

I don't think that's actually real cheap, either, but please relate him my commendations for a good taste in games to run:thumbsup:!
I don't think it has to be that cheap, it just has to be limited somehow. Or he will keep picking up new stuff the moment anything shiny catches his eye, and then want to complete that line or game as well.

OK, I can see how that would be prohibitive:shade:!

Yesterday's BF session was mainly a matter of research and shoring up defenses, as the PC's tried to find where any secret temples in the area of the demon that is targeting the M-U might be, and also preparing their various homes and holdings for any future assaults by said cultists. They did eventually find indications of such a temple several leagues away, and set off for it, leaving their henchmen behind to help protect their loved ones.

More chaos followed in the WC session, as we managed to decimate a fair amount of both the local vampires and the Followers of the Mad Gods, but the night ended with our Bast character getting killed by the Immortal who had recently showed up.

My entire gaming group has their vaccine so Carcosa picks up again on the 16th. I finally made a calendar for the game because "YOU CAN NOT HAVE A MEANINGFUL CAMPAIGN IF STRICT TIME RECORDS ARE NOT KEPT" and am quite pleased with the results.

After exploring 2 planets, we're switching from Alien (Free League) to Galaxies in Peril (the upgrade of Worlds in Peril). Two of my five players were just not into Alien/space genre. We're switching to a superhero game. I've ran two successful Worlds in Peril campaigns so I am hoping for a third.

We're playing in a game world from the second campaign and it is basically a Brave New World mixed with the Boys. Supers have to be registered and the most powerful work for the federal government. The top of the line supers (like Homelander from the Boys) are part of Alpha Prime and there are only a handful of these world wide. The mid-range supers are part of Delta Prime and they assist law enforcement as well as hunt down unregistered supers.

The players' group is the Defiant. And they are unregistered rebels trying to rescued detained supers and take down Alpha Prime (that's the Boys influence).

So far we have:
  • Mind Control teleporter
  • Angelic righteous flyer (almost the Angel Summoner  )
  • Telekenetic
  • God of Cats (his character remade from Part Time Gods)
  • Tank/Brick

A Mythras Moment - in my sword and sorcery play by post game, I'm playing a Howardian tall black man from a southern continent. He's got a bit of Black Panther vibe, but in my head I voice him as Doomfist. He's got a goal to marry the daughter of the current king and is in a warrior-animist cult worshipping the King of Beasts, Nwanga Zhaal. This is on Xoth, for those familiar, and the character is Azimban.

Anyhow, while the Big Tank in the party dueled a big bad from his own race of half giants, I grappled the dragon by the tail with a rope embedded with animal claws - a sort of very nasty garrotte. I was tossed around and things are not looking good, especially since the dragon just reduced the big tank down to negatives in nearly every location with his breath (he did win the duel), but i just hit, luck pointed it to a crit, and am going to make that thing bleed to death. Nwanga Zhaal will see my deeds and know I am worthy!

follow up edit: He was unable to defend, and I did minimum damage, but I did get through the armor and was able to cause a bleed.
Rotating his body, he leaps up, plants his feet on the base of the tail, giving his weapon's claws extra bite into the scales of the beast. Yanking the rope to one side, the points bite deep, finding the gaps in scales, tearing through them, finding flesh, finding sinew, and piercing artery! Blood spews from the wound, drenching the ebon Pantherine in crimson as his feet come back to the muddy and bloody ground. The crazed look in his mirrors the roar of success as he drinks in the moment!

"Zhaal! Witness my hunt! Witness my prey!"

Excited for game day Sunday. I'm almost caught up on a huge miniature backlog for the game. I assembled and based a ton of mutants, cannibals, ape men, along with an assortment of rando NPCs. I got dinosaurs, Lovecraftian monsters, slimes, and vermin ready to go.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I saw above you're running something in Carcosa. What game are you using?

Have you guys seen that meme where the first picture says "Session One" and shows a super-organized desk with a bunch of color coded, organized notecards, bookmarked books, etc. and then the second picture says "Session Ten" and just has "maybe dragons?" sloppily written on the back of a cocktail napkin?

Tonight is a "maybe dragons?" night.

Well, my last thing was that I ran a demo of the old Victory Games James Bond 007 RPG over an internet videochat solution (Jitsi) for a couple of blokes who host an RPG podcast and a friend of theirs. It worked pretty well, and gave them good material for half an episode. And they pointed out some things about JB007 that I hadn't realised myself.

I was hoping for enough of an ego boost that I could get back into the saddle and do something, but nope. Maybe tomorrow.

I'm re-reading BX as a part of one of my own projects. It's amazing what you dont remember, like the fact that a trap only triggers on 2 in 6 chance. I never remember traps working like that. Anyway, I'm back to reading.

A few weeks ago, Bruce forgot what day it was, so CJ's Wednesday game did no run. I confess to making fun of him.
On Wednesday, I had forgotten what day it was and we didn't play.

The Thursday game went off as usual. Brother Ahmeet has been appointed a volunteer assistant by the inquisition. He didn't volunteer but he isn't going to object.

i have no GMing currently in the pipeline. our next game will maybe be pf2e, but honestly, I'm kind of nervous about it. it's more fine grained than i like. a lot of +5%s and whatnot. but i also have no real story to tell

Ahh just put some villagers in peril, stomp some giants down from the High Fells and raise an ancient evil in the east. Play fast and loose with the 5% increments. If you turn up the music no one will notice.

well, it's not me that would be running pf2e, so we'll see. currently looking like the circus thing.

i kinda want to do all lizardmen on monster island, but i'm not sure i can sell it
If they don't go for it, you still may be able to get milage out of your Monster Island in a sneaky way.
(Pete Nash's idea, not mine!)

If you have Raiders of R'lyeh (or Call of Cthulhu), you could always retrap Monster Island as a 1920s/1930s pulp adventure.
You could also just as easily do it with the Mythras corebook, it's just retrapping the Careers to present them as 20th century or contemporary versions.
Depending on how gonzo you want to go, you may need to replace the lizard men with humans, so-called 'generic Savages' - then you pretty much have Skull Island, more of an Edgar Rice Burroughs or Michael Crichton kind of adventure.

Selling them a completely different game, yet it's really the same one
Just an option

yea, there are a couple of ways to go about it. I had also envisioned a 1980's military guys doing a drug raid on a jungle base sort of thing, all rambo style. or vikings exploring the island clearly ripe with resources.

HEPCATS Episode 35: The Two of Wands
16th April, Cat Year
RLD 16th April, 2021
Present: Baron von Braun, N0-5R, Pierre Delecto, Zera

We find ourselves in Gygakistan, where Team Zero Three is escorting the formerly unstoppable serial killer, Chad Theungurg, to the good wizard Ozmodius, who will encase him in magical crystal to prevent any further killing sprees. Meanwhile, they also have to babysit Agent P’s obnoxious kid, Calendar. He’s 17, which seems a bit old to need a babysitter, but the team was not given a say in the matter.

The team ponders why they don’t just kill Chad, and are reminded that Chad has already been killed multiple times, but it never takes, long-term. N0-5R has a hard time believing this, because, according to science, that’s not how life works.

At the river bridge, the troll, Muncie, stands in the way, demanding that they pay the Troll Toll to pass. The team tries to convince Muncie that he should pay them instead, but he doesn’t buy it. When the team contemplates flying over the river to avoid paying the toll, Muncie points out the three baby dragons in his employ who are there specifically to prevent that sort of thing.

Pierre asks if the bridge belongs to Muncie. He says that, no, the bridge belongs to the adult dragon, Curlywang MacAllister, who takes 80% of the income from the bridge tolls.

Pierre convinces and/or mind-controls Muncie into believing that this is really a bad deal, so Muncie and the baby dragons should withhold their services from Curlywang until he agrees to pay them a better rate.

When the team is partway across the bridge, Calendar frees Chad, just to be obnoxious. Chad attacks the team. It goes poorly for him. One hit from Zera’s rock candy sword makes Chad dead… for now.

A man in dark robes approaches and asks if he can have the dead body. The team refuses. He offers to buy the dead body. The team still refuses. He mentions something about working for Zera’s dad. The team still refuses.

Pierre, finding this guy creepy, telekinetically knocks him off the bridge into the river.

Intern Agent DJ-Q2 asks, “is this how missions usually go?”

Pierre says, “Yes, heavy winds knock people off bridges all the time.”

The team, wanting no more trouble from Calendar, knock him out and tie him to Chad’s dead body. When they get to the other side of the bridge, a group of about 20 crossbowmen attack from the treeline, but do little damage. Pierre dodges a crossbow bolt, but gets wrapped up in a giant snake. Zera manages to take out the entire group of crossbowmen with her rainbow energy. She notices that they are wearing the crest of her father’s house.

Someone (maybe N0-5R with the big stick? I don’t remember) kills the snake. Baron uses the snake carcass as a rope to further secure Chad and Calendar.

Baron’s followers, who have been travelling at the Speed of Narrative Convenience, catch up.

The team sees an apparition of their former short-term teammate Wren, who says that she has been captured by the evil sorcerer, Axendorf, and needs to be rescued. Wren is able to relay her location.

N0-5R, Baron, and Baron’s followers decide to stay where they are with the “dead Chad plus Calendar plus dead giant snake” bundle while Zera and Pierre mount a rescue mission for Wren.

They travel northwest and arrive at the cave of Axendorf, the front of which resembles a skull. As soon as they enter, Axendorf attacks them with lightning bolts. In the course of the battle, Axendorf uses more lightning bolts and a spectral death-hand, while Zera hits him with her boomerang and Pierre uses his powers.

With Axendorf’s attention elsewhere, Wren is able to work on freeing herself from the magic bubble where Axendorf had trapped her.

Pierre telekinetically throws Axendorf into a lava pit, except that it turns out to be more of a lava puddle. Pierre telekinetically pushes down on Axendorf to force all of him into the puddle while Zera throws the boomerang. Between the two of them, they finish off Axendorf, and Wren is freed.

To be continued...

Four investigators (Dilettante, Researcher, Scientist and Photographer) vs. Yog-Sothoth. Investigators win by clearing the map of open gates and collecting enough gate trophies! We always throw out the Rumor cards, though, which probably makes it a little less difficult to close/seal enough gates and kick enough monster ass on time. We had two Hounds of Tindalos giving us a particularly hard time at one point.

On the topic of my continuing journey through various BX compatible materials I really enjoy the monster entries in the Wormskin 'Zine (the ongoing Dolmenwood Zine). I particularly like how each monster entry has a bespoke encounter table, and often a traits table, both of which are really well done. Here's a example, for the Goatman Thrall:

That's some great detail to work with as a GM.

Steel Aces 21 & 22: Size Doesn’t Matter
Chimera's resources may be cast. In the end, there is only one question for Guardian.

Today's Masters of Carcosa session was a success and they got a lot done.

  • A treacherous priest of Nyarlathotep led the 1st level PCs and their mercenaries into the lair of a 5 HD Spawn of Shub-Nuggurath, following up with a darkness spell to seal the deal. Miraculously, they slayed the Spawn and fled before reinforcements could arrive.
  • They rescued a woman captured by the ape men and befriended her tribe.
  • They tossed ape man captives into a volcano as part of a summer solstice ritual for a tribe they befriended, inadvertently triggering the appearance of an Old One, Cthugha.
  • They tamed a velociraptor.
  • Deep in the Tchlotlep Jungle they discovered the Plaything of the Red Sorcerer, a beautiful imprisoned Jale woman driven to amnesia by the torments and degradation of an ancient and wicked sorcerer. The 9th level sorcerer will find out she is missing in 30 days and seek her return, taking no prisoners.
  • They discovered their first dungeon, the Tomb of the Serpent Kings.
