I'm browsing University of Chicago Press - does anyone have any experience with books by Plato and Co.? I'm intrigued by Wittgenstein's Rhinoceros

No; it seems to be a children's book imprint of Diaphanes Press, a German/Swiss publisher active in philosophy. Chicago is just their American distributor, I think.

Wow, those look amazing. Just looked up Old Thiess and that is some interesting stuff!

Yeah, it should be interesting to compare the approach in that book with Daemons Are Forever, since they seem to cover vaguely similar topics. Ginzburg and Lincoln, who wrote Old Thiess, are both heavy-hitters in their respective fields.

But how do you play 2142? It doesn't connect anymore. That or the Quake one or the mecha one... the three I loved the most :tear:

Played it for 30 minutes this morning. Man that's a good little game.

I got Battlefield 1942,BF Vietnam, BF2, BF 2142 all to work on my PC. I am now fully 2006 operational!!

Bf3,4,1,5 are all on steam and working.
I heavily played all of those back in the late 2000s, they were great games!

In retrospect, at only 44 pages I could have gone with the softcover. This looks pretty involved; I don't think that I'll ever be fully using this in an actual game, but some of the tools will no doubt proof useful for modelling thieves' guilds activity without merely handwaving and improvving the whole thing.

That's my general feeling on Leback's books. The overall systems are crunchier than I would usually use, but they are solid, and easy to use piecemeal.

3rik 3rik I'd been pondering snagging that just for ideas. At 44 pages I'm more likely to go with pdf form. Anything under 200 pages I tend to get in pdf form and just print it up on my printer.

I feel the same way about Downcrawl, which I acquired a bit earlier on in the thread.
I was also seriously pondering that after you posted it thinking it would be good for fueling underground design ideas for me. You aren't finding it useful in that regard?

Oh yes I do. I also find the Thieves' Guilds book useful. I probably just won't be using all of it. Downcrawl looks to be somewhat less crunchy than Thieves' Guilds in that regard, though.

Got my copy of Beta Red, one of the zine rpgs I backed a few months back. It comes with a little GM screen, but the text is large enough for me to read with my glasses, so I was happy about that. Might have to give it a try soon

I think I'm late to the party here, since I think the main fans of this game have retired from/been run off from the forum, but still excited to get this collection in the mail today. I've been reading some 17th century history lately and would love to get a game in the period going sometime.

I do hope Black Vulmea finds his way back to us some day. In the meantime, let me express my admiration for this beautiful collection of one of his favourite RPGs

If you get run off this forum, you done did something wrong.
That's pretty arrogant. Someone gets fed up with the bullshit after one too many pointless spats with the usual brigade, that means they did something wrong, huh?

I believe he's distinguishing getting fed up from being permabanned. Black Vulmea was the former. I think there have been only a handful of the latter.

There’s a difference between leaving because you are tired of something and getting run off. BV is an example of somebody who was just tired of forums and wanted a break, maybe permanently. We love him though and would love to see him back.

We’ve banned five or six people in four years, which is probably some kind of record for an RPG forum.

Yeah, not talking about bans. I can't think of anyone this forum has banned that didn't have it coming at least 50 shil/outrage/troll posts before it landed.
But I do consider exhaustion with the mob as being run off. That's how mobs work.

I don’t think we have any mobs here, do we?

Oh, you definitely do. Have fun with the next moderation thread.

Anyway, Flashing Blades. Skimming the rules, the system looks very easy to learn, combat looks exciting, and the appendices have a lot of good setting information delivered quite concisely.
The military career tables are pretty interesting. A campaign that deals with some of the Thirty Years War conflicts could be a fun blend of politics and combat with plenty room for intrigue.

I don't think any good will come from calling out specific posters, but Black Vulmea did express his frustration with what he perceived as consistent disingenuous arguments from certain quarters that contributed to his decision to take a leave from the forum, and I could empathize with this as an issue that I think is unfortunately generally unavoidable in a public forum. I feel as a moderator to a certain extent I failed to curtail some of this, part of the double-edged knife of taking a largely hands-off approach to moderation that we enjoy here at The Pub.

I picked up the basic rulebook at the beginning of the year, but have yet to peruse it more than a few pages.

Bring on the 17th-century gaming, I say! There's not enough of it (or 15th or 16th century, come to that).

Besides BV, the biggest fan of FB was Dumarest who had a serious accident and is recovering with his family, FYI.

Anyway, I'm a FB fan as well although I just have the core book. Trying to cut back on my rpg purchases until some of the KS I backed fulfill but those are tempting to snap up in pdf at least.

I'm another Flashing Blades fan who only has the core book...but then that's my default for many, many games:thumbsup:.

I like Flashing Blades as well - it was one of 4 titles (Traveller, Merp, FB and RQII) that survived my great purge of 2000.
