Hey can a mod tell me which part of my deleted post was politics?

I really have no idea. Can you PM me? I don't want to crap up the forum with politics, but I want to know which part of what I wrote was political because I'm absolutely clueless.

Was it a reply to Certified in the "damaging ideas in the hobby" thread? Because that entire conversational tangent about inclusivity in the hobby was erased this morning

Ah, it was my latest response to the thread. I may have strayed too close to that one.

I didn't see that one, but yeah, if it broached that topic, we've been culling posts before a political discussion starts

It was me who deleted it. I'll PM you, partly because posting it here could lead to what I'm trying to avoid!

Don't want to start my own thread, but I think the mods got overly trigger happy on that purge. My post in that thread had nothing to do with politics, and wasn't at all in relation to Certified. I didn't even see his post, but I know he's got a track record for ignoring the no politics thing (as well as spamming ads every week). Can't you just deal with the instigator and not purge everything else?

I was typing up a response in that thread but deleted it once I saw the mod warning. I get the no politics rule, but I have to say I don’t quite know how ideas of inclusivity are political.

I mean, I get how these topics somehow get politicized by some folks….but to me, I can’t see how anyone can really argue against just the general idea of inclusivity.

I honestly didn’t feel like the post I was going to make would be considered political, but I deleted it to avoid that possibility.

How do you guys determine that kind of thing?

Inclusivity is not political.

Let me take a look at the original post again (if it still exists) and see what the issue may have been.

Certified’s post started out fine talking about inclusivity and then started to get into things like Gary Gygax’s political leanings, which is a no-no. Instead of doing an edit and chopping his post up (which we will do if it’s a couple words that break the rules), it was deleted by Tristram.

Inclusivity *IS* political when expressed in current USA extreme left terms. That post was an archetypal example for this particular interpretation of the word.

If you affirm the validity of a concept in absolute terms, with no dissent possible, you're doing politics (and philosophy). Sometimes you'll even be doing religion. There's no way around it.

Okay, gotcha. I'm not sure if I saw that post prior to it being deleted or not....so I wasn't sure of the context.

Good to know that inclusivity just as a general idea isn't a problem....pretty sure my post would have been fine. Thanks for clarifying, Endless Flight Endless Flight .

This is my personal rather than collective view (I've not discussed it with the other mods) so shouldn't be taken as policy.

Generally, on this, "politics" is mostly a shorthand for "culture war".

And those discussions are very prone to deteriorate into that. With the added fact of human nature that people are generally very sensitive to buzzwords from what they see as the "other side" while not noticing them at all from their own camp.

So if it appears that some mods are quicker to step in, that is probably the case. Because experience suggests that if we don't nip it in the bud before it gets going we wake up the next morning to a dumpster fire of a thread and 20 reports.

Also, there's the context of this specific thread. I definitely think it's a good thread and has lead to some interesting discussion. But anything about "damaging ideas" can quickly become "damaging ideologies" at which point we're back in culture war territory.

On inclusivity specifically, it's the generalness of the way the original discussion was framed that causes problems. It invites pushback on the question of whether the RPG community is inclusive, whose fault it is if it's not and all that kind of stuff.

A narrower discussion about how you can attract a wider range of people to your gaming group? Absolutely fine.

Even the gatekeeping discussion is a bit borderline, but handled carefully in its own thread I think it could work.

Without reposting the entire thing, I'm comfortable in saying that there's pretty no context on here people should be using the word "woke" unless it's about getting out of bed.

For once, I agree.

I thought I did a pretty fine job of addressing the idea that sometimes people just don't mesh with every group without touching on any hot button topics like identity politics - other than to explicitly mention I wasn't touching hot button topics referenced earlier in the thread - and my post got yanked.

Yeah, that's a term I tend to find annoying whether it's as some kind of point of pride or as an insult.

But I think I get the gist of it. I can't say I entirely agree with your take in its entirety, but I absolutely get where you are coming from and I understand the reasoning behind it.

You're correct, and I reinstated your post. (I'll look at yours in a sec Tommy Brownell Tommy Brownell)

EDIT: OK, yeah, no, sorry Tommy, yours was a continuation of the conversation on inclusivity after Black Leaf told every one to drop it. It doesn't mean what you posted was objectionable in and of itself, but that entire conversation is gone from the thread.
