I had to reread that, there's someone about Fancy Hatch that's a bit Mary Hinge
I had that cover sent to me about two years ago when a fellow was selling it, and it wasn’t until I came to answer your comment thst it finally occurred to me her name could be a euphemism.

Then again, a previous post I made about Legend of the Overfiend proved sexual references go over my head regularly, so nothing new here.

one of my friends, before I had seen it, described Overfiend as follows.
imagine someone, probably a madman, took the entire population of an animation studio, and locked them in a featureless room, and displayed hard core porn on every surface of the room, and every couple of hours you dropped in a fresh supply of raw meat for them to eat. keep them there for a month, and at the end of the month, give them free reign to create an anime.
Legend of the Overfiend would be the result.

Overfiend isn't really that extreme in terms of Japanese manga or film. I think in terms of the more narrow world of anime, maybe, although it sounds like to me there's even more unpleasant material out there (low budget hentai, loli and yaoi) but I don't have any interest in it.

I think it gets the hype it does because it was one of, if not the first, anime in that style to reach the West in the fan-subbed days when VHS bootlegs were almost the only way to see anime there.

R remial, I never saw any of it beyond the trailer, which was on a tape I had back in the day. I was watching it with some friends, and they made me watch it six times before I realized one creature was a Wang Beast.

I think its main claim to fame is that is popularised tentacle tropes and basically spawned the tentai genre.

Honest question: Is “tentai” a subset of hentai? I always thought hentai meant tentacle stuff, but aside from the Overfiend trailer I’ve never seen any, and now I’m wondering if it means something else, and tentai is the tentacle subsection of that.

Hentai is Japanese for 'pervert' or something similar, and it gets used to describe cartoon porn, although technically it can be applied to all porn. Tentai is just a colloquial term for tentacle porn (more properly shokushu goukan), although I think it's actually a portmanteau of Western origin.

Today I Learned. Thank you for the clarification!

Besides the cool art, one of the joys of this thread is learning about books and authors you've never heard of. Emil Petaja apparently wrote a series of 4 SF/Fantasy novels based on the Kalevala, of which Saga of Lost Earths is the first. Sounds really neat--something else to put on my 'read sometime' list.
