OK, so, I just got a glimpse at all the RPGs that are now out there oline and ...hoo boy... there is no way I'm am ever going to have the time to complete these lists the way I thought. We're talking thousands of RPGs, on ichio, fan creations, on Drive Thru. This was a way bigger project than I ever dreamed and, well, I just have more important things that I should be doing with my time. Working on Phaserip. Finishing up reviews. Cleaning my apartment. Art. Chasing squirrels.

Anyhoo, I'm going to keep all the threads as , at the very least, admittedly woefully incomplete resources, which is what this thread is for

I'll try and go through my RPGs tomorrow and see if anything stands out.

What are your parameters? Do licenses of gamebooks (Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf) count?

I considered those, but I think they fall into the same realm as Warhammer or Shadowrun, trying to keep to media-based licenses, otherwise things get too complex (like Mechwarrior 1st & 2d edition wouldnt count but 3rd edition would)

Thieves world in the 80s and 2000s.
Hawkmoon in the 80s.
GURPS Wild Cards
Rune

Off the top of my head then:

Firefly Role-Playing Game (2014)
Luther Arkwright: Roleplaying Across the Parallels (2017)
Judge Dredd & The World Worlds of 2000 AD (I think 2019) - This is more than one game technically.
Casting the Runes: Occult Investigation in the World of M.R. James (2019)
DIE RPG (tbc/2022) - Currently in open beta.

For supplements a few from GURPS:

GURPS Casey and Andy (2005)
Vorkosigan Saga Sourcebook and Roleplaying Game (2009)

Note that Neverwhere is unofficial.

Oh and i think HERO licensed a few things in the 2000s for 5th edition.

Casting the Runes: Occult Investigation in the World of M.R. James (2019)

Is that a license, or is MR James' works in the public domain? I've left out Pendragon, various Oz & Alice RPGs for being public domain works, still on the fence about that though

Ah, fair, I think it's the latter. (As you say, that's a borderline question though. Although things in the public domain are going to potentially be too common).

Here's a few that I can think of that seem to be missing from the lists:

1990s
Ironwood (based on a pretty obscure adult comic book series, supplement for Theatrix, 1995)
Discworld (standalone but GURPS 3rd powered, 1998)

2000s
Dragon Lords of Melnibone (2001)
The Deryni Adventure Game (2005)
Savage World of Solomon Kane (Savage Worlds supplement, 2007)
Babylon 5 (Traveller supplement, 2008)
Ghosts of Albion (2008)
Dragon Age (2009)
Hammer's Slammers (Traveller supplement, 2009)
Judge Dredd (Traveller supplement, 2009)
Strontium Dog (Traveller supplement, 2009)
Supernatural (2009)
Vorkosigan Saga (GURPS supplement, 2009)

2010s
Legends of Anglerre (2010)
Marvel Heroic Roleplaying (2012)
Double Spiral War (Traveller supplement, 2014)
The Gaean Reach (2014)
Trancers (2014)
Discworld (standalone but GURPS 4th powered, 2016)
FEAR Agent (Savage Worlds supplement, 2017)
Vurt (2017)
Winter of the World (2017)
Flash Gordon (Savage Worlds supplement, 2018)
Ninja High School (2018)
The Witcher (2018)
The Expanse (2019)

Ha! I should've remembered Ironwood, it was the first game review I ever did online. GURPS Discworld is already on the list

Lemme see if there are any missing that I can catch here... hopefully I don't duplicate. Not sure if you were interested in just the 1st time a license appears, or each instance. Anyways... here is a list I think is mostly not duplicate that qualifies?:

1988 Albedo
1992 Dream Park (R. Talsorian)
1992 Ralph Bakshi's Wizards (Whit Publications)
1993 Albedo 2e
1993 Buck Rogers - High Adventure Cliffhangers (TSR)
2000 Sailor Moon (Guardians of Order)
2002 Star Trek (Decipher)
2004 Albedo - Platinum Catalyst
2005 A Game of Thrones (Guardians of Order)
2006 Burning Empires (Based on "Iron Empires" graphic novels)
2007 Star Wars SAGA (WotC, maybe counted w/the regular d20 version)
2010 Dragon Age (Green Ronin)
2017 Star Trek Adventures (Modiphius)
2019 Feast of Legends (Quality is Our Recipe, that Wendys RPG)
2019 Jim Henson's Labyrinth (River Horse Games)
2019 John Carter of Mars (Modiphius)
2020 Lyonesse (The Design Mechanism)
2020 The Green Knight (A24)
2021 Dune (Modiphius)
2021 Fallout (Modiphius)
2021 Power Rangers (Renegade Game Studios)
2022 G.I. Joe (Renegade Game Studios)
2023 Marvel Multiverse (Marvel)

There have been two RPGs based on the Monster Hunter International novel series, one for HERO in 2013 and one for Savage Worlds in 2018.

I don't know if you feel like adding it yet, but the White Box-based OSR game licensed from the Forbidden Ruin novels funded on Kickstarter recently.

I'm also not sure if this technically counts as a license, but the author of the indie sci-fi Combat Frame XSeed novels released an RPG for the setting last year.

Just thought of three more:

World of Lazarus (Modern AGE supplement, 2019)
Altered Carbon (2020)
The Dark Crystal (2022)

TristramEvans TristramEvans I recall getting a Batman RPG in 1989 which was just a take on DC Heroes that was thrown out there to cash in on the movie. They curated the powers and skills to Batman levels and had stats for a bunch of his rogues. It also had a pretty good guide to Gotham, if I recall.

I don’t know how you’d categorize that for this list since it was technically not its own game, but figured I’d mention it. It was my intro to DC Heroes, actually.

Edited: My bad, it looks like you had it there and I missed it. I thought it came out in 89 with the movie, but looks like it was 88, which is why I missed it.

I remember them rereleasing it for the film, it was in a big cardboard cutout of Batman graphic novels at Waldenbooks. Think it was only like $5, I remember getting that along with a paperback-sized "Untold Origin of the Batman" that was a black & white reprint of some comic from the early 80s

(I'll update the lists later tonight/tomorrow - I think I got as far as Ninjaweasel's post, kinda burned out at the moment)

I got it along with a collection of prose short stories called Untold Tales of Batman. It had an Asimov story, I remember, and a bunch of others.

Definitely both in like a cardboard display right around the launch of the movie.

I just remembered a few more:

80s
GURPS Humanx (1987)
Cyberpunk - Hardwired (1989)
GURPS Witch World (1989)

90s
Cyberpunk 2020 - When Gravity Fails (1992)
GURPS War Against the Chtorr (1993)
GURPS Planet Krishna (1997)

00s
GURPS Jack Vance's Planet of Adventure (2003)
PS238 (2008)

10s
Tales from the Loop (2017)
Things from the Flood (2019)

Will this be added to the Resources as it nears completion? Can those be edited?

Albedo should be on there. But, I'll have to check, I think the first edition was written by the creator of the comic, and published by the same publisher, Thoughs & Images. So, not really licensed. 2nd edition was published by Chessex, and co-written by Pauli Kidd, so I think that one counts. Albedo: Platinum Catalyst is a different licensed RPG.

Oh... just realized I don't think I've seen Usagi Yojimbo mentioned, nor 6th Gun or The Authority.

In 2019 there was a free official Cypher game based on the tv show Carnival Row.

IIRC Magitech Chronicles is based on a book series by the same author (with it being from the same author, not sure if it is technically "Licensed" as it is their IP, but it is an adapted IP).

Renegade is also doing My Little Pony and Transformers later this year.

Fred Saberhagen's Empire of the East had a release from Goodman as an RPG.

Also the English Kickstarter for Blacksad The Roleplaying Game seems to be in limbo but it was published in France back in 2015.

Both Usagi Yojimbo games are on there, as is the Authority. Don't know 6th Gun though - what years is that?

That's a thought, I'm not sure yet. Was perhaps going to put it in a "thread of threads" pinned to the top

I'm leaving off games that are planned/announced but haven't been released yet, we can add then as they come out.

So, no Buckaroo Banzai ;)

Palladium did a Justice Machine sourcebook for the first edition of Heroes Unlimited. How's that for obscure? In a slight twist, Caliber Comics published a Mechanoid Invasion comic with rules in the back. I'm not sure what that counts as. There were supposedly two other Mechanoid comics by Mike Gustovich that are discussed in Mechanoid Invasion Book 3: Home World. I have no idea how one could get any of these things. But as they're comics licensing a Roleplaying game they don't make this list.
