Am I here? ... Maybe? Sort of?
I don't know.
I have to be SOMEWHERE, I guess... But it really feels like I've mostly given up talking about game stuff over the last couple of years. I don't even post to the City MMO forum as much as I used to, much less to any of the RPG boards.

In any case, I'm pretty much another refugee from RPGNet who found this place when it was linked by someone else. I had been posting regularly on RPGN for something like eighteen years by the time I threw in the towel and left for good. It's the usual story... Even being a politically leftie, Hippy Earth Mother type I usually felt Too Unenlightened for them. I just don't have an activist's level of understanding of the current social justice climate, and that was increasingly what seemed to be required to keep from running afoul of the Mod Squad.

Even though I do still largely agree with their intentions and the direction they're coming from, feeling like I was dancing through a potential minefield every single time I posted didn't play very well with the way my particular Black Dog barks. It was stressful and really took all the fun out of interacting with people there. And then one of my posts caught one of the more... "prone to uncharitable readings", let's say... mods on a bad day and I took that as loud and clear indication that it was time to exit stage left. Writing on the wall, I guess.

I knew enough about Pundit not to go near his site, but I'm not sure I'm really cut out to be a regular here, either... Restarting my maps thread and having it turn into porn and a some poor furry getting kicked in the unmentionables isn't to blame, but it did give a certain insight into the way the Pub works. XD

Sorry about the thread drift. The nice thing here is we tend to still be small enough most of us know what's seriously meant and what's not. The downside is we forget not everyone is aware of the silliness let alone being comfortable enough to say "Please don't do that in this thread"

I think if you want/care the admins would be happy to excise the non map related comments to return your thread to it's focused intent.

Agreed. I often find we tend to stay more on topic in the Design forum. I believe the nice thing her is you could ask people to knock it off and it won't turn into a flame war or a ban fest.

Yeah, I'm happy to shift it over if people think it's worth it a year later.

I will tut at people slightly (LOOK AT MY STERN RAISED EYEBROW) about fucking about that much in a resources thread. Generally stuff in there is best left useable as, well, a resource. Along with Design and Development, it's perhaps worth not going completely shitpost in that particular forum. (It's also the only Resources thread where that seems to have happened. Which I'm sure is just coincidence rather than intent, but I'm aware that could feel a bit too much like hazing to a new poster when it seems to just be happening to them).

This isn't an official mod directive or owt like that, just my personal view on those two forums.

I don't tend to notice what forum a thread is in. I click on what's new and go from there.

No, absolutely, which is why it isn't deliberate. I mostly think this was just an unfortunate situation due to various factors. But I think you make a good point about it not being as easy for a newbie to go "can we not derail this thread please?" and that's just something worth us all remembering.

I might be in the minority in that I never use the new posts function as my starting place.

For the wider audience, Im often the guy that will have you wondering why the hell Im in a given thread or to what dark gods of thread drift I offer up midnight sacrifices to.

I never used it either but I can see why someone would use it.

I'd say don't bother trimming the maps thread now, unless it's purely as a "for tidiness' sake" kind of thing.

I'm honestly not sure how likely that project is to be active again any time soon. Scanning and resizing more maps to post is a chore that I just haven't had a lot of time to devote to. 'No clue when I'll get back to it.

I can understand that. When I stop by and am replying to posts that came up in notifications, I am often writing my response to that comment without really thinking about the thread or forum I am in. It can lead to an exquisite corpse effect, where the replies make sense relative their neighbors, but the thread as a whole is constantly mutating.

I call that "Pub drift".

I just realised that I hadn't been in the bottom end of the forum for a long time.

I think I found my why here after the demise of the UK Roleplayers forum. TBP was just too fast moving, and zeitgeist-y for me, and the holier than thou attitude was grating. The Site, well that was just a cesspool in the opposite direction it seemed.

Here I just feel like I belong, even if I don't post as often as I should (I did promise to just swing in on chandeliers to threads, but I must have been outside for the last few weeks (how far can you stretch a metaphor? (and nest parentheses?))).

If you like parentheses may I suggest speaking with LISP?

kickafurry.pngLooks like we're being discussed over on TBP. The above comment is not typical of how we are being described, thankfully. But...

If kicking furries in the nuts is wrong, I don't want to be right.

EDIT: It's a joke ya fuckin' feebs

Honestly, *shrug*. While some of their posters are massively overstating how much we actually discuss TBP, we do make jokes about them now and again. We can hardly get outraged about them talking about us when we do the same. (I'm pretty sure many of their posters wouldn't agree with the general characterisation of TPB either).

I'm not seeing anything to get offended by. A guy came to the Pub, it didn't suit him, and he moved on. That's fine.

I thought this was a pretty accurate quote:

"RPGpub dances along a line. It's like being at a party with jocks, nerds, cheerleaders, band practice, a knitting circle and the drama group. But everyone's doing drugs so it's ok. When the high wears off, it can get a little abrasive, but that's when the mods step up."

The best review ever posted on TPB!

That's really weird. Thread derails in these here parts don't tend to veer into porn territory.

Really fucking WEIRD places, but not porn.

Unless you define fear and angst about water fowl as "porn". Then I guess we ARE degenerates then.
I think that "porn" in that particular (reasonably atypical and I gently tutted at people for it) thread was an amusingly hyperbolic way of talking about people making innuendos about maps, not literal.

That said, "the Pub is not for you if you get annoyed by derailing" is an fact excellent advice.
