As noted in the DCC Day thread, I did a little shopping...

  • Dungeon Crawl Classics Sanjulian cover
  • Book of Fallen Gods (DCC Day exclusive book of new patrons)
  • Hardcover screen
  • DCC Day adventure
At this point, I should probably sell my unopened Against the Darkmaster book and screen to offset this purchase, since this is what's going to the table instead!

Wow, my friend stumbled across these books in a 2nd-hand book store - AD&D 2E Player's Handbook and AD&D 2E Dungeon Master's Guide - $25 AUD each - or both of them together for $40 AUD - he phoned and told me, so I said definately go ahead and buy them, I would pay him for them as soon as I could!
(that's approx $27 USD / 23 GBP)

Given the prices that collectors are paying for them online, that is quite a good buy. Obiviously the 2nd-hand store owners don't know the rpg market.

He dropped them off to me this afternoon when he called in at my door to see how I was going with my week of flu/bronchitis (post-COVID fun).
Going much better now that these books are finally in my bookshelf!

I never got around to getting AD&D 2E in the 1990s, although I loved the art and the vibe of the settings that TSR was pushing during that era - Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, Al-Qadim, Planescape, Ravenloft, Dragonlance etc. I had my RQ book for fantasy games, but modern supernatural was my focus for a while, and I tended to buy WoD rpg books thru most of that time until it just sort of fizzed out for me, leaving me to return to fantasy at the end of the '90s. By then I had missed the boat on AD&D 2E, and I bought D&D 3E when it came out in 2000 or 2001, but to my dismay WotC had dropped those TSR settings by then.

We did play D&D 3E for a few years, but I never bothered with D&D 3.5E as there was there was something about WotC D&D that didn't capture my imagination as much as the earlier TSR era. I have subsequently bought D&D 5E, and the art direction is much better for me than 3E or 4E, and the mechanics are streamlined as such that I think it's the best version of D&D in that respect.

However I still prefer much more of the art and flavour of the material from TSR. The 80s stuff feels very iconic and classic to me, and the 90s stuff still feels current for me, even though many years has passed since then.

I already have these AD&D 2E books in pdf, but it is great to have the physicality of hardcover books, even if they are second-hand (but in decent condition for their age). Although I tend to play other systems, I just love classic fantasy as portrayed the way TSR did it back then!

Now...I really want to get the AD&D 2E Monsterous Manual to go with this, but the prices on both Amazon and eBay are stretching it for me at present.
There was a pic of a shop in USA that someone posted recently which seemed to have a lot of old AD&D 2E books in stock on their shelves...
I am not sure, but it may possibly have been a pic posted by @robertsconley ...if anyone knows what I am talking about, can they attempt to redirect me to that thread?

2e core books aren't really rare so it is good you were able to scoop these for a reasonable price, the prices out there are silly.

The 2e DMG cover is one of my favs of all time.

That Sanjulian cover is amazing. The cover he has done for the upcoming DCC Dying Earth adventure Mind-Weft of the Moonstone Palace is fantastic as well. The body language of both figures is perfect.

I received my Vaesen - Mythic Britain & Ireland.
The books are quality, but boy do I love the cloth maps I added to my pledge.

Now I need a coffeetable to drape them on, and people I could invite for coffee.

Edit: Thic!

Wasn't there an option for that as well on a higher pledge level:shade:?

(Seriously, the KS campaigns that offer having the designer visit you to run a game for you have always weirded me out!)

I got my DTRPG codes for Trophy Dark, Trophy Gold and Trophy Loom. I personally know next to nothing about the game other than the elevator pitch, but I'm looking forward to checking it out. Unfortunately, when I go to the product page for each book it doesn't show that I own it (though they're in my library and downloadable). I've had this happen before and it was never corrected, which is disappointing because I like rating books, even though I rarely leave a review.

When this happens, it's often that the publisher has given you a different version of the same book, with a different catalog number in the OneBookShelf system. Try to track down the catalog number of the version you have; it should be in the title's URL.

So, after getting through the first 5 volumes of Deadworld Archives, I bought (and received) the final 5 volumes plus the Dead-Killer and Tattoo trades too. Enjoying these a lot. My only complaint is that the printing (it's Lightning Source/Amazon) has a few imperfections. Still glad I invested in them though. I remember there was going to be a Deadworld RPG at one point, about 12-15 years ago, and it's a pity it never came to be. I think it was going to be a BRP powered game.

On the RPG front, I ordered a copy of Colonial Gothic: Lovecraft but it's going to take a while to get here. Also, a big surprise this morning was the arrival of a mysterious box... that contained another mysterious box of sorts! The limited edition Tardis-box Doctor Who 2nd Edition. Looks nice.

Glad to hear Doctor Who 2E is finally starting to ship.

This KS reissue arrived today. Had no idea it was on its way, a great deal as it isn't just the original ruleset but a number of classic adventures and supplements. The amount of content and dice set is kinda crazy.

Right? I was blown away with how much was packed in the box. Awesome Kickstarter, I even snagged the slim box just to be a completionist. Lol

In between juggling real life I continue to play about with/churn out books. With the 'new' book press I gave it a test run on Warlock! with the following results:

I'm normally critical of my efforts with a 'must do better' attitude but this one came out nice I must admit.

I'm thinking about picking this up. As in, I have a hardcopy in my cart on DTRPG. How is it? Is it meaty enough to actually run a semi-lengthy game with?

I found this in a corner under a carpet in a back room of my parent's house. It was there for about 50 years. I have no idea of it's origin. Smallest D6 ?

As promised in an earlier post, here is a picture of a standard S.P.I. D6 from the 1970s, on the map of Outreach, with a ruler for scale. It is 3/8 of an inch square.

Last Friday I received the first three books of Luke Crane's Miseries and Misfortunes, only about a week after I ordered them. I'm looking forward to the additional volumes when they come out in September:

Today I received Swords of the Serpentine, which is, in my own, highly personnal opinion, one of the best sword & sorcery tabletop RPGs hands down.

I've been running this with 3 different groups and and I still can't get enough of it.

Emily Dresner is involved so I was pretty certain it was going to be good! Is this going on Drive Thru any time soon?

Totally agree, though I don't use Eversink- I use it with my Eberron campaign.

Oh! It's better than good. To me, it's even addictive (that's hyperbolic, don't worry)!

Regarding the "pdf only" option, it should be available on the Pelgrane Press website in early September, so I guess DTRPG will follow I guess.

Eberron with SotS? This is interesting!

Cool! I have that on pre-order at Leisure Games so will hopefully be landing here soon. Can't wait!

Got my copy of Goblin Slayer TRPG yesterday too. It’s pretty hefty (600+ pages). I worry this book would not hold up to frequent use at the table. It’s printed like an omnibus manga.

I would be interested to hear a comparison with Konosuba RPG in particular.
I have a copy of Konosuba TRPG, but my experience is limited to playing it at Origins. I skimmed through Goblin Slayer TRPG, so this is more of a first impression than a real comparison. Well, the first thing that leaps out at you is Konosuba TRPG starts with a ~80 page replay while Goblin Slayer TRPG starts with a short story. I really prefer the replay format of Konosuba TRPG for getting an understanding of how the game plays at the table. The tone is also different, obviously.

Other things that stuck out to me are that the adventuring loop is similar (get a quest from the adventurer’s guild), but PCs have fatigue and attrition tracks to manage, so it seems like you have to be a bit more careful in picking your engagements. I’m running a homebrew system for exploration with a stress system, so the fatigue stuff immediately jumped out at me. I’m also playing in a TB 2e game, so I wonder to what extent attrition and fatigue can be managed (or if it’s more of a push-your-luck mechanic). I’ll defer to someone else who has read it more in depth or played it on the rest of the mechanics, though they seem a fair bit crunchier at first glance.

Edit: Use the right game name.

Picked up a new (in torn shrink) copy of the 2000 edition of Federation & Empire for $34. I'll never be smart enough to play this, lol. It is a pretty neat, though. Probably destined for the resell pile.

My days as a collector of games are behind me as I try to restrict my purchases only to things I am likely to run, but I stumbled on a couple of oldies on Spirit Games website which I couldn't resist. They were also very cheap and don't take shelf space, so I guess it's OK.

The first on is the TWERPS core rule booklet. I had a bunch of TWERPS world books a cherish but not main book (the one I used back in the day belonged to a friend). Everyone know the illustrations for TWERPS are awesome, but I particularly love the prose. It is cracks me up.

From the introduction:
"Welcome to TWERPS, The Worlds Easiest Roleplaying System. To play, you will need a GM (gamemaster), at least 1 player, some dice, pencils and paper. Now start playing."

The other is a rather obscure 90s game from Northern Ireland called STOCS Lite. I used to have its wild west expansion, El Paso, but never got hold of the core book. It's very vanillla generic/modern system. I don't expect to use it but it was less the cost of a coffee and it feels like a tick. Apparently there was a STOC (regular) rpg, but I've never seen it or known of anyone who used it.

I've always wanted to see El Paso. The game, not the town.

True story: I was driving from AZ to Corpus Christi, TX. I stopped in El Paso to get a bite. Some kitschy diner type place. As I stepped up to place my to-go order, the young lady behind the counter asked me, "Are you from around here?". "No," I replied, "just passing through." "Lucky you", she said.

I long ago heard of STOCS Lite but I've never seen it in the wild before. Is it a decent, workable system? And just how "lite" is it in reality?

All of their stuff used to be available as free downloads. I think it's still on the Wayback Machine, except for El Paso, which was, but appears to be a dead link. So, if anyone has the PDF of that one, please share, as it isn't piracy AFAIK.

It is lite in that it's 25 A5 pages, but it fairly detailed (skill based, hit locations, derived stats). It seems a perfectly reasonably system with nothing obviously objectionable or gimmicky about it.

That sounds similar to generic Fuzion or Action! System then. That's not bad. I'll have to hunt down the free electronic version via the Wayback Machine I think.

I remember back when I preordered this. Eventually requested a refund and was told that since the preview PDF was issued that I could only get a partial refund but I would still get the PDF. I agreed to that. Then got the partial refund and was told after the fact that “oh, we were wrong. You don’t get the PDF but we will email you the current version of the PDF.”

if they had told me up front, I would have just kept the order in place.

Well, Pelgrane Press being a very small structure, I'm not surprised that sometimes, mistakes occur, especially when you've got so many things to manage and handle.
Perhaps you could contact them and see if there's a way to get your pre-order back (I don't know whether it's feasable though).

I got my Into the Odd in also- I was surprised at how small the book was.

Same. I knew it would be digest sized, but I wasn’t expecting it to be a nice, slim, high quality, very readable book. I hadn’t checked out the PDF (no time lately), so the print version was a nice surprise.

Feel free to loop me in if a copy turns up. I wasn’t aware of STOCS & El Paso before and now I need them :hehe:

BTW TWERPS is the bomb, definitely a property that should be rereleased
