I disagree heartily. I spent too many mornings being woken up to the incessant chatter of those wretched little bastards.
I wonder if it is a difference in squirrel species? You have Western Grey Squirrels and Douglas Squirrels in Washington, which we don't have here in Ohio.

Our native squirrels are a good deal quieter than chipmunks, though neither one can compete with songbirds. Every summer it takes me a couple of weeks to get used to how loud they are about dawn, especially the robins. Until I do, it's hard to sleep much later than 5:30 a.m.

We have some dodgy roads around here, too. Especially when bushfires do this:

I've seen the Dukes of Hazard - Yee Haw!

Wallace, Idaho

I gotta know why. I lived there (my ex and kid still do) and it was/is a toxic shithole that swallowed up more than a few people I know. Drugs are rampant, with the section of I-90 that runs through the Silver Valley nicknamed The Crystal Highway, and there is no real job market to be found. Every large project that was supposed to bring the jobs and revitalize the valley ended up falling through for one reason or another. One of the major wins was getting a Walmart in Pinehurst, which almost closed because they couldn't get enough people to staff the place due to failed drug tests.

I guess on the bright side it does have lower housing costs than most places in NID seem to these days, but that's not saying much when there are no good paying jobs to make sure you can keep the roof over your head. When the mines closed it really hit the area hard. I think there are only two or three still active in the whole valley. Remote work is sketchy because there's no real broadband internet infrastructure, leaving a lot of places to rely on satellite or the valley wifi service. I was really disappointed when I found out about that. I was told that my kid was struggling with school because she didn't have good internet at home, so I was trying to find something for them. All the options that I could find online were bullshit - nothing near what was advertised and often "Oh, that address is actually outside of our service range" despite it coming up as served on their website. Suddenlink (used to be Cox, will be Optimum at some point) advertises cable service there, but it's extremely unreliable and in no way meets the standard of cable internet found in other areas. Despite the speeds being nothing compared to what I'm used to, that's the option I was going to go with for them, but they had already tried it and said it was garbage. There is also "Ziply Fiber", which isn't actually fiber, it's DSL, with a whopping max speed of 12Mbps. In 2022.

Holy shit... I didn't realize I had so much hate for that place still bubbling inside of me. My kid turns 18 next year and she'll likely be moving to Oregon, (where I'm at) when she graduates (she's still looking at colleges). I can't wait for that day.

I am a tragic victim of circumstance, nothing more. Not that I mind the arctic, I don't don't, but it's more a matter of shit happening than any actual choices made by me.

There's a supermarket there called Kiwi. I find this amusing.

How much free time do you have?

Well, I'm just prepping to explain to a willfully nontechnical product owner why her IFRS data mart for the GL feed should really get all the floats converted to numerics and why its 2 hour outage window really means it should have validation on the inputs to the models. 18 year career middle manager in a bank, now working for a big-5 consultancy for 10 months and thinking she's God's gift to the financial services industry. Unfortunately Dunning-Kruger applies and she assumes anything she doesn't understand doesn't matter.

There's a reason why it's a runner up next to a hypothetical Spokane. I just like how it's closed in by the mountains, sort of tucked away and hidden from the world. It's a beautiful area with a lot of colorful history to it. It has a lot of potential to be a great tourist destination, but unfortunately it's in Idaho and as such will likely continue to have the problems you mentioned.

Yea I visited Lewiston, Idaho for two weeks in 2008 and once you get past the beautiful scenery and the novelty of wild animals grazing on your lawn I can't imagine why anyone would want to live there.

The town smelled bad from some old fucking mill and sewer lines.

That old mill apparently had the last jobs too because the biggest employers seemed to be Disability, Unemployment, and Social Security.

The townies on the wrong side of 40 really disliked Californians. No one was outright hostile but soon as they learned I was from CA, it started a hidden contest among the residents to see who could slam CA and use the n-word most in my presence. I heard that word more in two weeks than in the previous 10 years it was nuts!

On the other hand people in their 20s wanted to GTFO to somewhere with opportunities.

Sounds about right for Idaho, former home of America's Neo-Nazi's.

Yeah if you've lived in the PNW you know Northern Idaho has been associated with the Aryan Nation, neo Nazis and just some general racism for a long time. Even by previous higher standards for what consisted of racism.

Indeed. Richard Butler’s Aryan Nations compound was in Hayden, ID, right outside of Coeur d’Alene. He called it a “white homeland” and used to lead White Pride parades down the center of downtown CdA, right next to the posh resort. People would come from all over to participate. It was a really shitty time to be there.

As mentioned upthread, I live in Chicago, and intent to stay here at least until I retire.

Not sure where I would want to live after that. At some point I will inherit my parents' home in the Seattle area when they pass, but I hope that's not until a very long time from now. But when it happens, I might move back there.

In January of 2021, they moved from the house where I grew up in Kent, WA to a house on a bluff overlooking the Port of Everett in the historic district of Everett, WA, with a view of Hat Island and Whidbey Island. It's quite lovely.

I do enjoy how we get four distinct seasons here in the Midwest, though.

Oh, that's a lovely location! If you know... don't want to go back there and uhm... live. I'd definitely make an offer. I do wish your parents a continued long life though. I mean seriously that whole area is very nice.

I like to visit snow. Weather is best when its optional. It's second best when there's public service amenities to move weather aside when I regrettably need to accomplish things on the surface of the prime material plane. Y'know, like Switzerland. :hehe:

So I'm used to just driving through Everett. It has a reputation for meth among the people I'm used to hearing about it from. But as someone who eventually wants to get back into boating that's a nice little area between the San Juans and south Puget Sound.

Am I being mislead about crime levels in Everett?

I don't know any actual crime numbers. What I can say from personal observation is that there are bits of Broadway that seemed a bit sketchy, but the area where my parents live, which is a few blocks further west, consists of a bunch of lovely, well-maintained homes and friendly people. Living in Chicago, I'm used to people not from an area focusing solely on the negative aspects of that area. That might be happening with whoever is telling you about Everett.

I have experienced that with people who visit NYC or Los Angeles. Some people just bounce hard off urban areas. San Diego is a beautiful city but I remember a couple Marine Corps buddies from small towns focusing only on the tiny bits of urban blight

I miss going to Little Italy or eating at hole in the wall seafood joints.

2003 was the last year I attended Comicon, it got too big and too crowded.

I haven't noticed this thread at all! But then again I browse this side of the forums only rarely..
I live in Pori, Finland. About 70-80k citizens in a former industrial town, but now it's just dying, bleeding out population quite fast.

Just to geo-spot. I live in the San Francisco/ San Jose Bay Area, CA, USA. (Silicon Valley to use the media point). I live in the south bay/ west valley area in Los Gatos/ Saratoga/ Cupertino/ segment of San Jose area. I am up the hills on the way to Santa Cruz.
