Dragonbane is the fantasy RPG I've been looking for

Best Selling RPGs - Available Now @ DriveThruRPG.com
Instead of percentile roll under is d20 roll under (like Pendragon). Parries, dodges, card drawn initiative, pushing and conditions, really everything I'm looking for. Not just humans, dwarves, elves, and halflings but also mallards and wolfkin as well. And the Kickstarter price is unreasonablely reasonable (even the later normal price is usually quite affordable).

DUCK FROM ABOVE!!!

Just backed this too. Love the artwork I've seen so far. Will need to sell something when it lands as don't have the shelf space for it without doing so but I can't resist it as looks like a lot of fun.

Yep, been talking about this for a while over on the BRP thread. Not sure if I'll back this, but I'll definitely end up buying the Swedish version. Drakar och Demoner was the second rpg I ever played. From interviews and statements from Free League they're looking to keep to the core of the Swedish BRP fork, with some new elements added to the rules.

I know some people are completely burned out on Kickstarter. And Free League sells bundles through normal channels. But the stretch goals are so good it seems unbelievable, but Free League has fulfilled multiple kickstarters. For less than 40 bucks there's a box set with a poster map but now also there will be cards, dice, standees, battlemaps and who knows what else. Even for a slightly higher price when it starts selling normally, I think Dragonbane is going to be a steal. Like a starter box but with the entire game line in it.

I also like the idea of Treasure cards. It isn't just a gimmick. By using cards, traps can be hidden in the deck. That is great design. Sure, you can just roll on a chart. But having a player draw one randomly has a nice physical weight to it.

I think the artist is the one that did Vaesan. I really like the art as well.
I like the art style too, but it looks like a lot of white space, wide margins and little text, again.

Do we know how many pages are in the Core Book? I couldn't find it on the KS page.

If I hadn't already just invested in Mythras, Against the Darkmaster and Old School Essentials, I would be all over this.

I have to be realistic! This looks phenomenal, but I can't rationalize it.

Ducks... I won't rest until every fantasy rpg has them as playable races!

PS But fuck pigeons, that's just silly.
Drakar och Demoner has had ducks since the early 80s, one of the things they took from RuneQuest (the rest was, as mentioned, mostly Magic World, but ducks have always been a part of DoD).

Always better than 'Gäss och Galgar'

Edit: Or "Gäss och Giljotin". Tell me that's Swedish for hatstand

Hmm if the geese are going to the gallows then I support it 100%
Oh, maybe he did mean gallows. Galgar means that, but also clothes hangers, and that's the first thing I though of. You hang things from both I guess.

I will freely admit I am not a huge fan of ducks...but that assassin's creed duck attack art is the awesome.

It looks great. Liked the free QuickStart. My experience with Free League Kickstarter fulfillment has been outstanding. And damnit I do not have the money for this.

Gotta look over my household budget and see if I can carve closer to the bone to free up the funds for it.

(Get's out 10-key calc, sharpens pencil...)

I’d really like to know what monsters the book will contain. If there’s one area that I feel FL falls short on, it’s providing monsters. And fantasy games live and die by their monsters to me.

Looks like traditional fantasy. Not sure if that is what you're looking for or not. But monsters auto hit but on a random chart and no attacks are the same in a row. Which I've never seen before.

Spoilers for the Lady and her Knight:

Yeah those are from the adventure. I’m more wondering what will be in the final book, and how many.

Just curious on what you're looking for. They did a whole monster book right?

I've been thinking about implementing a similar mechanic for boss fights in an rpg-lite wargame, with the caveat that it would be using cards and that the boss's next attack would be drawn first thing in the turn so that player characters can prepare countermeasures — but otherwise the attacks would be very powerful.

There are only 20 monsters included.
Maybe Strech Goals can alter that <fingers crossed>

It looks great and I have pretty much backed every other FL RPG released in English other than Into the Odd. However, I will be passing on this. I have plenty of fantasy RPGs and I have no nostalgia attaching to Drakar Och Demoner nor BRP. Every session I play of Dragonbane would be one session I wouldn't be playing of Dragon Warriors or B/X D&D (or Symbaroum, WFRP or Forbidden Lands for modern equivalents).

I may pick it up down the line once they have released more books and have a decent number of adventures/campaigns available.

How does this compare to Forbidden Lands? Both seem osr like fantasy games, and both coming in a box set.
Forbidden Lands makes use of Free League's house system, from Mutant Year Zero, where you roll a handful of d6's to obtain success. It is more similar to Tales from the Loop, Vaesen, and other games with that base mechanic.

Drakar och Demoner is based off of the d100 system of Basic Role Playing from the early 80's, only redone to use a d20 instead of a d100, so it should be compatible with a lot of the BRP-style games out there. (CoC, Pendragon, Stormbringer, etc.) I'm not sure if any of the other BRP-style games have been redone with d20 rolls, but apparently DoD did this a number of years ago and folks have liked the change.

In FL, "pushing your roll" is vital to success. The game's ethos is that you must risk injury to achieve great rewards, and that's coded pretty heavily into the rules. Just roll the dice and you might get a single success; you really need to be rerolling and risking damage to achieve any more

Similarly, backgrounds for the playable races have some hidden secrets and nasty twists. It's intended to be a harsh and unforgiving world.

FL is explicitly into hexcrawling and basebuilding with light resource management. The focus is rediscovering and resettling a lost kingdom after all. There are great rules for exploring, wilderness travel and establishing a settlement, as well as some really deeply explained adventure/base sites. It says a lot that there are tables for generating myths and legends as much as treasure.

Tonally, DB feels lighter at first glance. Pushing rolls is in the rules, but seems less vital than in FL. Feels like a more traditional "fantasy adventure" game, but obviously we'll see.

Yeah, that's a new one to me. For those with experience with the original game, was it typically more about confronting the monster vs. a monster? If so, I heartily approve. Mowing down hordes of creatures that would otherwise be nothing but nightmare fuel in any folk tale, legend or novel has always been a little deflating in most of the fantasy RPGs I've read, run or played.
