Kickstarters Thread

Best Selling RPGs - Available Now @ DriveThruRPG.com
Sure there are a ton of cheaper games but $80-90 for a gaming book isn't unheard of these days. It is about the same price as the book and pdf pledge for 5E Adventures in Oz kick starter (2 books total of 500 pages for $89).
Yeah, there are. My point was "numerous cheaper and better alternatives make this a no-go" (for me:thumbsup:).

They are also including a bunch of tech with the game. Voice actors, music and some kind of online gaming support. The inclusion of 3d printer files also adds that they are after a tech savvy player base.
Sure, but I still don't see myself joining. Again, I'd follow it with interest, because many people obviously have different preferences (the gall those people have:grin:)!

I don't really follow 5E so don't know their history if any and I'm not interested in this, but I bet they have a target market (probably Critical Role watchers) that wants this stuff.
Probably. Understanding this is exactly why I'm going to follow it:shade:!

Anybody here going for this one?

I had backed this, but ultimately decided to cancel. Not because of the quality and content, but because of the timing.

The estimated delivery date is September 2023. A year (plus up to half a year in typical KS delays). I love KS campaigns but I’ve learned that I frequently want the product NOW because of current interest.

In a year and a half away, will I still even want to run this? I had the same dilemma with other KS campaigns. Immediate consumption needs vs the 1-2 years (or more) wait time.

I actually think that my time with KS is over. Will I even be alive in a year?

I ended up doing the same thing for the same reason. We're really pushing hard to find a new house to buy and I'm hoping to be in a new place by the start of summer at the very latest. I don't want to be in the middle of that with Kickstarters shipping and have started realizing I need to cut out Kickstarter for the next year.

As it is I'll be dealing with the Delta Green Kickstarter for another two to three years and I'm worried about losing items to that one. (mutter)

It really depends. Some things I know I'll want. But I'm definitely starting to pay attention to that more, especially after I've received a few things and gone "huh"?

Yeah that's started to hit me recently too. I actually asked for a refund on Urban Shadows 2e, which they were kind enough to give. I'd totally lost interested in it and didn't see the point in getting it anymore. I wonder if it's an age thing? I turn 49 in a few months and there's definitely an awareness that my remaining gaming time is finite, while I already have a ton of things I want to get to.

I didn't discontinue when we moved, and I had no problems changing my addresses and getting everything.

They are building a neighborhood across the street from me if you are staying in the area. It’s just a bit further up from the place we met. Maybe 2 miles.

Fuckin' 'ell mate, lets hope you are!

I'm in the same boat though. I look at how many RPGs, boardgames, video games, books and films I have that have even been completely unused, hardly used or just skimmed through and I literally don't need any more stuff. Kickstarter especially. I often forget I've backed them they take so long to arrive and in the last couple of years I reckon about 50% of purchases have just gone straight onto ebay. I still have loads to be delivered but I'm getting better not making the situation worse - I've still added some RPGs but no boardgames in the past 6 months (and nor will I) and certainly no video games.

POD is still a bane for me though; just can't bloody resist it.

Maybe we're all going through and end of season malaise. Australians are dusting the snow off their Emu's. European staring down a winter without heat. The US is heading into election season with 24/7 ads for things we can eat, buy, wear or play with.

I think what we all need is a good midlife crisis. Buy a hot wheels sports car if your favorite car. Put a Barbie or Ken next to it and chuck it all in the fire pit.

* This is not a Kickstarter per say but still it's an upcoming RPG so I thought I'd share it here for the RPGPUB denizens.

The folks behind the 'Art of the Genre' OSR'ish books full of great old style and new style D&D Artwork are soon releasing their own RPG called 'FAST Core'.

Wow shipping in November 2022!?

I'm still not clear if this is an update of Adventures in Middle Earth or a whole new thing. I assume Shire Adventures will be a translation to 5e of the material in the TOR 2e starter box.
Its a whole new thing as they don't hold rights to AIME. However, it sounds like there is a lot of similarities as they can use both the underlying 5e base and TOR on which AIME was built.

From RPGnet:
Very similar to the AIME version but with less abilities because they cap at level 10.

The Captain is the kind of paladin who use his charisma to boost his allies and have aura powers. One subclass allow you to challenge a monster and prevent it to attack your allies and have the polearm master feat integrated in the subclass, The other subclass give you a guiding bolt kind of power.

The Champion is the fighter class in its most boring form. One subclass make you good at ranged attacks with a kind of sharpshooter feat replicate. the other one transform you into a mini barbarian.

Treasure-Hunter: I need to check my version of AIME but I am pretty sure the two version are the same or very similar.

Messenger: The Warden of AIME without bardic inspiration or song of rest but with sneak attack and uncanny dodge like the treasure-hunter and some social abilities

the Warden: It is the AIME wanderer with the known lands and favored enemy class feature. You gain a damage bonus against your favored enemies.

The Scholar: It give barding inspiration and help heal during rests like a Bard. It also gain access to spell like abilities called craft. I forget to mention that all the other class can take a craft instead of a virtue (feat) The scholar just get more of them. Same subclass as the AIME version.

On the flip side of them not having the rights to AIME, it looks like Cubicle 7, without any lotr rights is taking parts of AIME and expanding on it for a new product:

It looks like it includes the Journey rules, with names changed.
I haven't backed as $30 is a tad high given that I have AIME and have a few wilderness related products.

If I'm reading this correctly at the FL site, this is going to be simply a pre-order vs a kickstarter campaign. FL seems to enjoy good success with KS so kind of interesting to see them go a more traditional route here.

I'm sure this will find its way onto my shelves. I like TOR, but a 5E based version ultimately seems more playable to me.

I'm curious how AiME without Tolkien will work. From the description this kind of sounds like a book of rules and ideas for long travel rather than a stand alone setting.

Doesn't Kickstarter now limit the number of outstanding campaigns a creator can have before adding new ones? I think that's the reason they've gone this pre-order route instead of another Kickstarter.

No more than they did before. You just can't have two running at the same time. Other than that, you have to complete your first campaign before you start another. That's it.

As a more established business too, FL have been moving more and more releases over to preorder rather than KS.
I think for businesses, there are advantages to not using KS also, i.e. stretch goal mania and such. If they have a good handle on what they want it to be and have the funds, they can more accurately predict with just pre-orders, and keep the scope in check to just the products they want.

That was also my impression from reading about it. It sounds like the whole thing is just the Journeys rules from AiME, but expanded out from 16 pages into an entire book.

Maybe it will provide some further granularity.

From playing and running AiME’s journeying rules, I found that they carried 5e’s curse of class abilities making it incredibly easy to circumvent the most interesting parts of the system.

Needless to say, if you have a Ranger (any variation) journeys reliably became quite dull and uneventful. I found myself more than once thinking “why’d I even work through this mechanical process when the outcome was essentially: nothing happens at all thanks to your ranger and you make it to your destination with inspiration because youre all so fucking talented!”

Yeah, that's what I mean. They have 3 outstanding that haven't started fulfillment at all, and a couple of others that are only partially fulfilled. I *think* that means they can't run another right now. Of course, I'm not that familiar with Kickstarter from the creator side, so I could be way off.

KS generally gives creators with a good track record a pass on the restriction of unfulfilled KS. I am sure FL falls in that camp.

FL has commented on doing more product releases as preorder where it does not believe the hype of KS to be needed. Given that the releases for LotR 5e are contained to just 3 I am sure that’s their chosen approach here.

No... fulfilled isn't the same thing as running. By running I mean you can't be funding two Kickstarters at the same time. That's the only limitation after you've fulfilled your first.

Kickstarter's own help center contradicts this.

We don’t permit running multiple projects at the same time, or launching a second project before fulfilling your first one. Having multiple live projects can confuse backers and split support. Moreover, running a project is a lot of work, and having more than one live project will likely dilute your attention and energy.

We do, however, allow experienced creators in good standing to launch and manage a certain number of projects back to back, within and depending on the category they have experience in on the site. We consider a creator to be “experienced” once they have completely fulfilled at least four projects.

How many projects can I run back to back as an experienced creator in good standing?

Creators in all other categories:

✓: May launch and manage up to 3 unfulfilled projects back to back in their respective categories (e.g., Games, Food, Dance, etc.)
