Barbarian is on Disney+ but is a bit more visceral and even perverse than that suggests. This is no PG-13 horror film. Good set-up, black humour and it goes places you're unlikely to predict. A lot of fun.

Finished watching House of the Dragon, which ended on a "Oh, there's going to be trouble now" cliff-hanger.

Currently watching Cyberpunk an anime show that, surprisingly, is not full of shouty kids. It's pretty good and I should finish it tonight.

Not sure what to watch next, there's a SciFi show on Amazon that is meant to be really good, maybe I'll try that.

I mostly avoided watching horror stuff yesterday, and instead watched episodes of NCIS LA, FBI Most Wanted and FBI International. I did check out the first episode of Cabinet of Curiosities, which I liked (but obviously thought the protagonist was an idiot who deserved his fate)

We always watch at least one horror movie on Halloween (often times I will watch a bunch but I only had time for one this year). Last might my wife wanted to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas, but it wasn't streaming for free so we ended up watching Edward Scissor Hands, which I had not seen in a long, long, long time. Completely forgot that Alan Arkin was in it (and how funny his character was). One thing I didn't notice before was how odd the behavior of the town's people was at the end after the bully gets killed by Edward. They basically hear Winona Ryder's explanation (where she tries to protect Edward by saying they both killed each other, using one of his spare scissor hands as proof), and someone shrugs and says "well I'm going home". This is a small, small community. I think it might even just be a single culdesac, so as bad as the Anthony Michael Hall character was supposed to be, it is still a crime scene, and he's like one of their neighbor's children (his parents might even have been in the crowd that decided to go home to bed for all I know because I don't believe we even see them: possible I am wrong here).

Either way, better than I remembered it being (only saw it once or twice). I like the Vincent Price cameo, and I enjoyed the fairy tale take on Frankenstein. One of the best parts of the movie I think is how the townsfolk initially all respond as if there is nothing too unusual about Edward when they meet him (besides some initial vaguely nervous curiosity, and the church lady, no one seems phased by this man created in a lab).

In another "What insane musical instrument will youtube recommend me today?"
The Commodordion:

Watched the newest Gabriel Iglesias (Fluffy) special on Netflix. It's the same material he did when I saw him live earlier this year, but it's still funny as hell. Now back to watching The Flash. After the crap fest at the start of the season, things got somewhat better with Deathstorm, though this subplot about Iris and some "time sickness" feels like a waste of screen time so far.

He does put on a good show; I saw him live earlier this year as well at a nearby casino amphitheatre.

Netflix:

Watched Exception, an 8-episode animated sci-fi mystery. The story and pacing were decent. I wasn't thrilled with the acting or the animation style. The end left me underwhelmed.

Not sure if it was worth watching. Am I ever going to watch it again? Nope. Do I regret watching it? Nope. Am I gonna recommend it? Nope.

I think "Meh" sums it up pretty well.

I just finished the fifth season of Cobra Kai on Netflix. While I enjoyed the season, it kind of feels like they are running out of ideas and are retreading the same ground as previous seasons. Plus it has started getting a bit fanficish IMO, with bringing in almost every character who appeared in the movies, and a lot of "What if this character fought this character" situations. But I will still watch the next season.

Watched the first episode of the second season of Mike White's HBO satire The White Lotus. The first season sometimes was a bit too on the nose, here it feels less didactic but just as caustic. Great cast too.

Any fans of "See" on Apple TV+?

It's a decent post-apocalypse action series starring Jason Momoma. It's one of those post-apoc settings where things went so badly we're back to medieval tech. Partly because the apocalypse killed off most of the population. Partly because the few survivors were sightless.

It starts with the birth of two seeing twins, the adopted son and daughter of Jason Momoa's character Babba Voss. Babba Voss and his family are then hunted by the delightfully insane Queen Kane (Sylvia Hoeks) and her Witcfinders.

The character Babba Voss is death incarnate with a blade (and with pretty much anything else to be fair) and the fight scenes, which predominately are the blind fighting the blind, are excellent. The lore is cool too, and it's a tight three season complete story. If you haven't seen See (sorry), it's worth the time if you like that sort of thing.

Netflix

The Bastard Son and The Devil Himself

I'm only on the third episode, but there's a wow factor in every one so far. Acting is solid. Characters are fully three-dimensional. Story moves along extremely well, and the scenes that are glossed over are truly not necessary or a result of deliberate editing. World building feels a bit shallow, but that's likely because we're following a narrow perspective. There's potential for it to open up a bit.

HIGHLY recommended. Will update as I get through more.

I just watched this simple first episode of solo roleplaying Mörk Borg. This guy is going to try and end each episode with a self-made metal song about the episode. The first one is hilarious. It starts at 39:02.

Watched a few episodes of NCIS tonight. Didn't watch much else as I had other things going on today

Finished. Overall nicely done, with many great moments. Some of the character building was sacrificed in favor of wrapping the story in the last two episodes. The ending was decent, yet still managed to feel forced.

Definitely worth watching over many other shows, and I'm looking forward to a season 2.

Finished watching Cyberpunk, which started well, without any shouty kids, then got into shouty kid mode, finishing with "My implant is better than yours mode" and a frankly ridiculous set of fight scenes. I enjoyed most of it until the last few episodes. Why does anime have shouty kids?

Also finished The Bastard Son and The Devil Himself, which was an excellent urban horror series and left things open for Season 2. I enjoyed this all the way through.

Currently watching Vampires, a French series, which I might have seen before but cannot remember anything about it. It is pretty good so far.

then got into shouty kid mode
What's shouty kid mode? There aren't even any kids in there, other than perhaps one, so I'm having a hard time understanding it.

Finished Ms. Marvel which was pretty good, and She-Hulk, which was good until the last episode- didn't stick the landing for me, and was a bit of a cop-out.

Also watched Tom Swift, which though it was cringe in some areas, I enjoyed.

Started watching The Professionals with Brendan Frasier and Tom Welling - some bad writing and questionable dialog, but I'm enjoying it.

Watched Day Shift with my wife, I found it an amusing comedy horror flick, a bit like a low powered Blade with some Men in Black aspects. Very gameable.

I treat this movie essentially as a fairy tale, and people in fairy tales typically don't tend to ask a lot of questions. Nobody questions a witch using Ginger bread as a roofing material, or where all those evil step parents came from.

That's why the witch lives deep in the forest. City inspectors put their foot down on her questionable building techniques.

And that is a completely fair point. I was prodding at details one isn't really meant to prod at in a movie like this (after all even the town looks storybook).

The three of us watched Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons, the 49th(!) DCAU movie. It runs about 80 minutes.

We all enjoyed it. The interplay between Jonathan and Damian really makes this movie stand out from other DCAU fare. The animation style is very similar to a comic book leaping off the page compared to some of their other recent offerings. I personally think it’s the best DC animated movie in about ten years. 85/100.

Looks interesting- have to try it!

It was one of the inspirations for my rpg Hunter$. It's not a great film, but for what it is, it entertains. I liked how it presented vampires as not all being the same, but not in a WoD sort of way.

Started watching the new season of Equalizer on the way to work this morning, then dove into this film during the first half of my shift:

It's another one of these mainland China fantasy films. Less action, a bit of romance, and ok special effects.

What's shouty kid mode? There aren't even any kids in there, other than perhaps one, so I'm having a hard time understanding it.
Almost every anime I have seen has sone kids who just shout all the time. I have had to stop watching some because of that.

Rebecca, Pilar's sister, become progressively shouty to be point where the becomes really annoying in the last but one, or last but two episodes.

At least, she annoyed me.

Caught up on Equalize yesterday and started on the lasted Law & Order episode on the train to work.

Today's Chinese fantasy film is Master So Dragon Subduing Palms 2

She's not really that big a part, so I was able to overlook that- and because she's sort of sorting her own stuff, it just became understandable to me why she put on the facade.

Netflix

Just watched The Bad Guys and Hellhole.
Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum.

The Bad Guys (animated) is one of those movies that is both completely predictable and still enjoyable.

Hellhole is a horror mood piece. Definitely not for the faint of sensibility. Not really plot driven, in the conventional way.

The common thread for both would be, "it's about the journey, not the destination." Both recommended, but I'm curious to see how long Hellhole stays with me... whether it rises close to the status of The Ninth Gate, or if it stays just a decent horror flick.

Just saw Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. I enjoyed it. Very strong Walk Hard vibes, but in a way that is tailored to Weird Al. I don't know how the humor is going to land for others. It wasn't exactly what I was anticipating when I first saw the trailer, and the only real example my mind could go to for comparison was UHF (which it is nothing like). I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say I liked where they went with Madonna and there are quite a few bizarre cameos that were oddly satisfying.

TubiTV

Killer Rack is an udder-worldly tale sure to peak your interest if you like b-movies, Lovecraft and ta-ta-titillating comedy part-time musicals. With a doctor Cate Thulhu and horrendously hilarious fx and puns-a-poppin, it's made to fill you with good mammaries.

Though the two boob shots in the entire movie are fake, the entire experience is quite the bag of fun. Well, two bags, really.

Recommended if your sensibilities run this direction.
