The TV show (certainly the early seasons) was similar to most network shows and as such had to reset to the Status Quo by the end of each episode so they could show them out of order. It wasn't till Buffy (late 90's) that the networks seemed to started trusting their audiences to follow along with longer story arcs.

Even Buffy's first season has a lot of monster of the week. I think first seasons have to make sure it is easy for someone to come in after the start and get caught up.

Streaming on demand has changed that since now it's easier to go back to episode 1. Wasn't as true back then.

Sometimes I miss the days when file sizes were in the kb and saving didn’t take quite as long.

Yeah, I'd put Buffy and Highlander on par actually - started out with a lot of "Immortal of the week" oneshots, then transitioned into longform stories over seasons. I mean, neither show was exactly Exo-Squad.

I can't believe people remember in that level of detail. For me the past is just a big bucket of stuff that happened. I once forgot an entire year of my life and never missed it.
Yeah might be able to tell you the decade. Maybe a couple years but exact year it's going to have to be associated with something pretty damn strongly for me to be sure.

It's all about linkage to milestones. Got the cd player and car kit for my birthday in my senior year of highschool. I graduated in 1996, my birthday is September, so 1995.

I measure everything pre-highschool by proximity to 2nd grade, which I started in 1985. Because that's the summer I got waaaaay into Transformers and got both Optimus Prime and Megatron for my 8th birthday. It says something about childhood in the 80's that most of the defining ticks on my timeline in that era revolve around what cartoon toyline started to dominate my imagination at the time.

Not everything, though. When I saw the 'what people think/what the 80's really looked like' post above, I could smell the two decades of old cigarette smoke leeched into that wood-paneled hallway.

Wasn’t $153 like all the money in the world in 1983?

(Or maybe it just seemed like that to me in my early teens living way the hell below the poverty line.)
It was a lot of money, yes. My mother was pretty indulgent but even she wouldn’t spend that much on me on a whim. For comparison, NES games were birthday and Christmas treats, not “be good for the nurses who have to take blood” treats.
