It sounds like the Rogue One people wanted to make a show about all the talking, political bits in A New Hope and the Prequels.

And I’m fine with this. Anything is better than the insipid stupidity of Rise of Skywalker.

The writing is lights years better than that, the political bits are also actually quite tense because of the stakes and characterization.

If you're the kind of Star Wars fan that doesn't care about anything beyond the pew pew and boom boom you probably won't like Andor.

edit* I'm gonna add that you probably don't read the text in comic books either.

The people who say it “doesn’t feel like Star Wars” are right - it really doesn’t. To me that’s a good thing, I think it’s better than normal Star Wars, but I can understand why people who are bigger fans of the franchise than me - who watch all the animated series and read the novels and comics and play the video games and who think the prequel movies are underrated, wouldn’t feel that way. I’ve heard people say this series feels more like Blade Runner than Star Wars and I can see that.
Back when I first saw Star Wars circa 1977, I thought it was interesting how the rebellion was depicted in the movie. I enjoyed a lot of what came since but I felt that rebellion aspect never really got explored in a way consistent with the first movie until Rogue One came along. And now Andor is fleshing it out even more. I wouldn't like all my Star Wars like that but I am glad they doing and looking forward to Season Two.

I can’t wait to watch this show with my son. He loved Rogue One.
All of the Padmé and Anakin scenes were so awkward and confusing. She’s like: “No way guy, I’m not interested, stop being so clingy and weird”, while arranging couples’ outings to the most romantic places in the Galaxy (wearing super gorgeous, revealing gowns). Jesus Christ, mixed signals anyone?! Poor virgin monk Anakin.

Rogue One was a consistently good movie throughout but I think the highs of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi are better than anything that it has to offer.

Yay, Andor Season Finale stuck the landing!
There was a reckoning.

My name is Maara Carassi Andor. I’m honored to stand before you. I’m honored to be a Daughter of Ferrix, and honored to be worthy of the stone. Strange, I… feel as if I could see it. I was six, I think, first time I touched a funerary stone. Heard our music, felt our history. Holding my sister’s hand as we walked all the way from Fountain Square.

Where you stand now, I’ve been more times than I can remember. I always wanted to be lifted. I was always eager, always waiting to be inspired. I remember every time it happened, every time the dead lifted me… with their truth. And now I’m dead. And I yearn to lift you. Not because I want to shine or even be remembered. It’s because I want you to go on. I want Ferrix to continue. In my waning hours, that’s what comforts me most.

But I fear for you. We’ve been sleeping. We’ve had each other, and Ferrix, our work, our days. We had each other and they left us alone. We kept the trade lanes open, and they left us alone. We took their money and ignored them, we kept their engines churning, and the moment they pulled away, we forgot them. Because we had each other. We had Ferrix.

But we were sleeping. I’ve been sleeping. And I’ve been turning away from the truth I wanted not to face. There is a wound that won’t heal at the center of the galaxy. There is a darkness reaching like rust into everything around us. We let it grow, and now it’s here. It’s here and it’s not visiting anymore. It wants to stay. The Empire is a disease that thrives in darkness — it is never more alive than when we sleep. It’s easy for the dead to tell you to fight and maybe it’s true, maybe fighting is useless. Perhaps it’s too late. But I’ll tell you this. If I could do it again, I’d wake up early and be fighting these bastards from the start. Fight the empire!

Fight the Empire Indeed!

Whoooooooo!

Ahem...

Anyway one thing I've really liked is how Evil with a capital E the Empire is here.

Not in a comic book way either, much more drawing on the real historical source of the Empire's visual look: fascism. Torture, chauvinism, genocide, labour camps/prisons, arbitrary arrests, etc.

In the first film Vader and Tarkin blowup an entire planet. Kinda cartoonish but also a more outright cruel and evil than anything we see in the rest of the OG series which keeps it pretty light from there on out.

So thematically as well as others Andor returns to the first film in some ways.

Btw I know some have found the score of Andor by Nicolas Britell 'not SW' enough but I find it appropriately moody and inspiring with a futuristic sheen due to the canny use of electronic textures.

Britell also did the excellent scores for Barry Jenkins' Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk.

At the start of the last episode there's a kid we've hardly seen before building a bomb and we realize that nothing's going to go as planned for anyone. I don't think I've ever seen a conclusion with so many unfulfilled intentions. Maybe No Country For Old Men but that's on a smaller scale. Though, of course this isn't the end of the story, just the first chapter. I suspect they'll end up doing a third season because they'll run out of time to tell the whole story in one season. They might even have to make a movie length sequel to bridge between season three and A New Hope or something.

Such a brilliant show

I think Rogue One started us down this path towards more realistic Evil in the portrayal of the Empire. This was building on that.

And I binged the whole thing in two sittings, and I think I'd have been more frustrated if I'd not watched it in that manner.
