As the title indicates, I've been idly making book covers in the Midjourney AI art generator, and seeing some of them makes me pine for 80s D&D books that never existed in this dimension.

If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of prompts are you using to get these?

These are really cool. AI is getting there. We’re still seeing some weird abstract nonsensical stuff here and there, but it’s looking better and better all of the time.

Just a couple more before I give it a rest. These are starting to look a little more 90s now that I'm adding a few more conditions:

Made with Midjourney but still.

Here's an amazing one: "This is what happens when you ask Ai to create on set pictures of the secret movie that Jim Henson and HR Giger created in an imaginary 1984."

It's not just one image, though.

This one could be (and may become inspiration for) what a certain goblin queen looks like in one of my game-world nations I have in mind:

The other ones imply something different to me - some sci-fi setting where alien ambassadors communicate with translation devices:

Other images from the set here:

I refuse to believe AI generated this!

Interesting, thanks!

Is this a player-facing map? Would you use it during play? Would you limit what parts the players could see during action, other than the "under construction" parts?
Those are awesome pics. Which ai did you use?

The map is totally player facing this time because the pcs start as employees. Specifcally the ship is secretly captained by a rogue modron who employs exalts as troubleshooters. Rogue psychers and dark mechanus are reserved for the team of juicer werewolves in power armor with big laser cannons. Pcs, as starter characters, are mostly just issued all the cheap red plastic armor and laser pistols they want and beamed down to planets on away team missions.

They could stick around and I'll get more mileage out of the map, but I anticipate they'll grab their own ship and set out to doom more of the setting to mutation, slavery, or death. Then I'll just snag random bits if I need a luxury resort (remove exterior walls), big chunk of generic machinery map (use engineering), part of a moon dome settlement or military base, etc.

Turns out Midjourney is pretty good at churning out large amounts of character portraits as long as you don't mind the occasional hideous mutant in the lineup. Here, have a few I've been brewing, no charge:

I like Ben Stiller from Dodgeball gone fantasy.

There's some serious '80s vibes going on, there.

"80s fantasy art" is part of the prompt for those.

By the way, the secret sauce for getting multiple characters or portraits in one go is the word "lineup" in the prompt.

So the prompt "a lineup of fantasy character portraits..." plus whatever art-style you want will net you things like the sets I posted above.

How tha hell is AI able to make this? :trigger: Illustrators are gonna be out of work now!

The problem with this is that AI capable of image generation has been out for only a few years and it can already create almost seamless, photorealistic images. Having difficulty with hands is just a bump on the road that's going to be fixed in the next couple of years.

50-50 because the heart of these new models is sophisticated pattern matching and random table generation. They don’t understand any else other than associations. You can see the main issue with the left and right side of the portraits. Earrings don’t match, shoulder armor pieces don’t match, hair doesn’t break the same way on both sides of the head.

Doesn’t mean it isn’t a useful tool but my experience with machine learning leads to my opinion that their ultimate use will be two fold. people will use them for good enough application where all you need is the general gist of the subject. Artists will use them as a starting point for a image they will finish.

I think application to watch out for is textual generation. Not as a replacement for authors but to take random generation for RPGs to the next level. You could create a setting, create some setting elements, locales, characters, etc. Then train the model on your samples and have it “roll” additional entries in the same style. Then you would edit the the results. That would speed up a lot of what I do considerably.

Prompt:

secret 1984 collaboration movie between Jim Henson Studios and HR Giger, --v 4 --q 1** -<@1041044173211566153> (relaxed)

Into website dream.ai (dream at wombo site, free and apparently unlimited) with 'realistic' style selected gave

Not as amazing but not terrible. I've managed to use the site for pics I'll be using for icons for a dragon council and cocain wizard guild.

Yeah, it probably won't drive all artists out of work, specially if someone is looking for something very specific. But I foresee a future—probably within my lifetime—where most art is gonna be done by AI, particularly for people who don't have money to pay an artist, such as small publishers and similar operations. I think we're gonna start seeing a lot of RPG products using a lot of AI generated art very soon.

Yeah, I have a feeling it will be a matter of a professionally done cover and AI interior art.

Just like using art programs, I can see most artists transitioning to learning how to write good prompts for AI, while others use it to get a better idea what their client wants before commiting to a project and how to best make a piece their own.

I've been using a free ap on my iphone that does black and white line drawings better than most of the art in published games that use that style, like almost every OSR title. What anamalies do show up I can fix in MS Paint. We are already past the point that I would pay an artist for this type of work.

Which app?

Playing around I've found that if you can get an AI to produce something close to what you want, take thst pic and feed it back in as a template. Took some trials but I got blank_tradingcard (1).jpg
