Movie Recommendation Thread

Just saw CAPTAIN MARVEL. I thought it was good but not great, about in the middle of the pack of the Marvel movies. Brie Larson makes a great CM, but the plot dragged a bit, and the humor often fell flat. Good 90s music, though.

I just finished Chasing the Dragon, a Hong Kong crime drama starring Andy Lau and Donnie Yen as the main character. Both characters are based on real people, and are sort of tied to Lau's Lee Rock films from 1991 (he plays the same character here). Yen doesn't do a lot of his typical action here, because his character gets crippled part way through the film, so it's more of a dramatic turn from him. Really good movie, and all the Brit police are portrayed as some real bastards (as all of the ones shown are corrupt)

Watched The Highwaymen last night, a Netflix movie about the pursuit of Bonnie and Clyde focusing on two retired Texas Rangers. The title comes from the two ex-Rangers being appointed special agents of the Texas Highway patrol for the duration of the assignment. Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson play the two lawmen.

I quite enjoyed it, seems to take a few liberties with the timeline and events, but overall it fits with what I've read. The recollections of those involved often conflict, so it would be pretty hard to have a definitive true account. Bonnie & Clyde are shown as quite ruthless unlike the 1960s Warren Beatty / Faye Dunnaway movie.

While a serious movie there was a fair bit of humor, primarily between Costener and Harrelson playing two capable but past their prime investigators.

I've never gotten the Kevin Costner hate, liking most of his movies. I would compare this one favorably with Wyatt Earp or the Untouchables (which I consider classics).

I give it three thumbs up

Hey, I watched that last night too!

Kathy Bates was really good as "Ma" as well, wish she got more screen time

Yeah, I thought the movie had solid casting across the board. First it was TV, now the movie studios are going to need to step it up to compete with some of the "direct to video" stuff getting made these days.

We had family movie night last night and again tonight. Yestreen we watched the original theatrical version of Star Wars and tonight we watched The Empire Strikes Back. The latter ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I really feel this film series may have a big future.

Doesn't ring a bell.

Trailer for new Joker film...

I honestly thought it was an April Fool's joke until I watched the trailer. I'm pretty hardwired against prequels these days, but as said, Phoenix is so good that it'll be worth seeing him in this role even if it had nothing to do with the comics.

Hopefully wash that Jared Ledo taste right out of my brain.

I suspect that the reason I was unaware of this movie is that every time I came even close to the news that there was an origin story movie about the Joker coming out, I immediately recoiled and put it out of my mind.

FWIW, I read somewhere last week that both Joker and The Batman (the new Batman movie) will be the "darkest DC movies yet."

I can handle that for the Batverse, as much as I'd prefer a Denny O'Neill "World's Greatest Detective" version to make it's way to the screen.

I just wish they'd realize that the only way to do Superman right is to embrace the sillyness and his his character archetype of a "Sun God". His movies should be bright (in both colour scheme and story), and full of cheesy optimism, hope, and kindness mixed with tongue in cheek wink-wink humour.

The Superman film I'd make is a 60s period piece that focuses on the romantic rivalry between Lois Lane, Lana Lang, and Lorolei, with Superman's crime-fighting in the background. Break up the romantic farce with some elaborate fight scenes with cameo supervillians, but largely play it as the "Pillow Talk" genre of film that happens to involve a superhero (and a mermaid). Get the person who did "Down With Love" to direct, or Bryan Fuller.

Picturing Hudsucker Proxy-era Jennifer Jason Leigh as Lois (I guess now a younger modern equivalent)

Jennifer Ehle as Lana Lang

Everyone would probably hate it.

Thing is I doubt anyone can top Donner and Lester's respective takes on Superman. Together those films hit a lot of the targets you propose.

Yeah, I wouldn't really try to surpass the original film (the sequel....maybe), nor can anyone fill Christopher Reeve's shoes, but I'd just want something light and entertaining. Even lighter than Shazam! but with a more subtle form of comedy

I have yet to see a Batman done better than the 1990s Batman the animated series. Also as far as I know the only Batman that gave any recognition to Adam West (as the Grey Ghost).

Yep, it was pure adaption distillation. And even if the Dark Knight is one of my favourite films, Mask of the Phantasm is IMO the best film about Batman.

We watched Mom & Dad with Nic Cage and Selma Blair a few nights ago. It's violent, darkly humorous and all kinds of messed up. My wife & I both loved it, but it's not a movie for everyone.

Saw Jordan Peele's Us tonight. I liked Get Out but consider this significantly better. Less humour than Get Out but some very vivid imagery, more in-your-face gore (although most of the violence is edited to avoid the worse) and surreal horror. Good score and use of pop songs. Very nice twist at the end.

Trailer for new Joker film...

Finally seen it. That looks both like (1) a movie that will have very little to do with the comics (or the DCEU) and (2) a good movie. I’ll definitely see it.

Yeah, this one looks amazing. Never did get around to seeing Get Out, though.

I'm almost finished with Paskal, which revolves around a Malaysian special forces unit. It starts off really good, with a take down of Somali pirates on a freighter they are trying to hijack in the straight of Aden.

By the same token, my favourite version of Superman is from the animated Justice League, with good intentions balanced by heavy responsibities. The episodes in which he is "out nice guyed" by Captain Marvel and doesn't know how to handle it are priceless. Those were good times.

I liked THE HIGHWAYMEN, which was just a western transplanted into the Great Depression.

Also liked THE SILENCE, but I have not seen A QUIET PLACE yet — I have it sitting around the house on DVD, so it is my fault. I am now reading the book, which is much more violent than the flick.

Fuck you Giganotosaurus Giganotosaurus for making me do this again but it’s stronger than me.

I was a Highwayman
along the coach roads I did ride
with sword and pistol by my side

Many a young girl lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the Spring of ‘25
But I am still alive...

Just watched Prospect, which is the most "Traveller" movie I've seen since Outland...

Watched Upgrade which is a gem of near future cyberpunkish world building.

Storywise it is a revenge action thriller with some humour and gore thrown in. Well acted by the guy from the underrated TV series Quarry.

Upgrade is awesome. I consider it a perfect supervillain origin story

This is an older one I missed, but just in case anyone else did as well, highest recommendation for Black Mountain Side, currently on Prime.

Best horror film I've seen since The Witch, similar in tone to John Carpenter's The Thing.

It's a slow burn, but pulls it off really well.

That Joker movie has a sort of Batman: The Killing Joke vibe that I’m picking up. I wonder if they used it for inspiration.

I think all the Jokers we’ve got in film have been influenced heavily by The Killing Joke and The Dark Knight.
