I hate geese. A free roaming thread.

I was showing a home to a couple today, which backed onto a lake. It was a house that met all the their needs, and they loved it. Then a flock of geese landed in the backyard, and the woman's disgust for geese soured her on the house entirely.
Did you invite her to the forum? Roleplaying is easy enough to pick up or just bluff your way around, but if you’re a goose fan, we’ll see straight through you.

Did it have a fence? After I put a fence up they decided my lawn was not nearly as cool.
It did not.

No, somehow bringing up that I moderate an Internet forum that centers on geese hatred (with occasional side discussions of RPGs) didn't seem a great way to build on that level of trust that people look for when buying a house.

It's also possible that after years of slingshotting them with ice balls they have learned this is not the tasty yard it appears to be.

What? You didn't have a fence and complained because geese kept coming into your yard? Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Put up the fence and then complain if they get over, through it.

We were on a bike ride today at the time share we are staying at. The geese populating the golf course nearby wouldn’t move for my son. “No one likes geese except geese lovers and geese fanboys!”

Agreed! I remember watching that when I was young. Wasn't the actual goose hit on camera too though? Or am I remembering it wrong?

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

Admit it: you secretly love geese but were spurned by one and this is how you cope.

What is that? Some kind of pro-goose memorial for all the"poor dead geese"? or a stark reminder of the winged menace: Cliff Rac- Geese.

The aussies even have better eagles - meet the Australian Wedge tailed eagle. These have a habit of stuffing themselves on roadkill and then taking off to about windscreen height as vehicles approach.

They're responsible for more deaths than any other eagle species.

New Zealand has a great line in extinct bird species. Meet the South Island Giant Moa. That's a 10' tall flightless bird. Not even prehistoric but hunted to extinction by Maori some 500 years ago.

NZ's impressive lineup of recently extinct bird species includes an even bigger eagle. This was a giant eagle that preyed on Moas. Extinct ca. 1400 due to its natural prey being killed off by humans.

I have never loved geese. They just suck more when you live near water. They're just noisy flying shit factories.

Well, if we are going to bring more Australian birds into it, there is always the adorable butcherbird. It impales animals on branches, building a "larder" to show its status.

Needless to say, they really love barbwire.

The sound of butcherbirds is something that always makes me instantly homesick. I'm re-watching Farscape at the moment, and butcherbirds were singing in the background of an episode, and it just gave me a wave of nostalgia.

Not to mention the innumerable species of venomous jellyfish, spiders and snakes indigenous to Australia. Of course, we do have snakes here in the UK but they tend to be employed in middle management.

New Zealand spent millions of years in splendid isolation and developed a fabulous island ecosystem of bird life, most of which didn't survive outside evolutionary pressures such as being hunted to extinction by either (a) Polynesian settlers, (b) exotic species introduced by the ever-prescient Victorians (c) a lighthouse keeper's cat.

Here's the Kakapo, one of nature's evolutionary dead ends. This one is trying to hump the cameraman making a documentary of it.

On the other hand, we have the Kea, also known as the South Island Alpine Psycho Parrot. The Kea's diet primarily consists of sheep, car windscreen liners and anything it can steal from tourists.

I once opened my home office door to see a deer six feet in front of me. We both just looked shocked at each other until I backed up into the office and shut the door.

Sounds like you had a nice office location.
Or there was a large amount of bold deer in the downtown area of the metropolis you live in.

Does this hatred extend to ducks?

Because if so, Alan Moore (of all people) has your back:

I live on an island. We have some large parks and still have large lot sizes on much of the island. The deer are small for deer. No one hunts them. Mostly they just wander through the yard. If I was a Gardner I would be pissed because they eat lots of the flowers and plants. I'm not.

No oddly enough I really like ducks. They don't mess with me and I don't mess with them
