Man I've been reading Mythras. There is a lot to love there. My *problem* is... my group. It took a momumental effort to get these cannibals to move over from d20 D&D to anything else for fantasy.

Mythras is one of those systems that passed me by without me giving it a worthy look. Even though I own a lot of it's antecedents/relatives (Stormbringer, early Runquest etc.) I simply never ran it for whatever reason. That said, doing Al-Qadim IN Mythras would be one way to get them to potentially give it a whirl... maybe.

Right now they're (we) are in deep in Savage Worlds. Al-Qadim(ish) settings would go really well with SW. What I could do is when I start writing it up, I'll make it "system-neutral" for the fluff. And keep the sections for crunch segregated? Dunno if that would work.

Al-Qadim is one of those settings that I feel every D&D player should have their characters visit - even if it's just for a one-shot.

well, the obvious choice is for you, AsenRG AsenRG , T The Butcher , Simlasa Simlasa , and a couple others to move to my area so we can have a group. Simple! ;)

I personally have used a good many books just for the setting. Primeval Thule from Sasquatch Studios did that and put out the book for pathfinder, 4e, 13th age, and finally 5e. I used a bunch of fate of the norns to run a 13th age game. Most of us do this I think.

Well, once you have made them look at another system, it should be easier to pry that rift wider open...

Do it! You know you want to...
Or else, run it with Savage Worlds:smile:.

I'm no longer, strictly speaking, "D&D player", but maybe I should look into it, too. What does it do that Tekumel doesn't:wink:?
(Admittedly, regardless of the answer, it's unlikely to withstand the concurrence for the next spot when the current campaign folds. I've located locally a printed copy of the Dune RPG which I might buy*, I've purchased The Witcher and am considering** obtaining it in print, too, I've got a KS copy of Vital Hearts, the isekai game, I've got an idea for running an S&S game with Cepheus Engine (before or after the Sword of Cepheus lands, if it's before, I'm going to mix Cepheus Faster Than Light with Mercator), and I'm almost definitely going to purchase Maelstrom Rome in print. And did I mention Aquelarre seems tempting? It does:grin:!
And all that's a few months away, because my current campaign*** is still going strong.

*Though I suspect it was printed on a home printer, which is probably why it's not over at Ebay:tongue:.
**The part where you cut through armour is grating at me. But I like basically everything else.
***In the Legends of Steel setting...which started with the BASH system, switched on to Flashing Blades, and now might or might not switch to Tales and Legends (the players that requested the change are now having an unexpectedly hard time dealing with the conversion, and since I didn't request that change, I'm not helping:evil:). I'd guess that now I'm officially part of the "System matters, but setting matters way more" group?

If you build it, they will come. Pitch a Mythras one-session "break" from your regular game with pregens and plenty of limb-hacking combat. (Let them know about lethality beforehand!) If you've managed to get them to try SW, you're halfway there.

SW has the Land of Fire books (a Near East-inspired Hellfrost spin-off). Haven't read them but if they're anything like Hellfrost, they should be pretty damn good.

Sounds great! Where do you live again?

Or, you know, we could get a game going on the Pub chat. Or via Zoom.

TBH, I think about doing this far more often than I do it.

Move to the greater Seattle area. Once a month we can all meet somewhere just over the mountains to game for several hours.

Southeastern Washington state. Richland-kennewick-Pasco. Another Mythras guy is 2 hours away near Pullman.
Meet in ellensburg?

Someday I'm going to get the right Internet/camera/speaker/whatever set-up at home and offer to run a game via Skype or whatever is best these days...just a matter of having the disposable $ and figuring out what I need. Most likely it'd be Fridays around 8 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Save the date! :clown:

I think pretty much any USB cam will work. Start by trying roll20. If you end up using one of the rulesets well supported by Fantasy Grounds then I'd switch and buy an ultimate license for that.

I've felt that Arabian Nights settings were under-used in RPGs, as there are truckloads of folk tales and other literature from the era, plus a lot of classical literature preserved in Arabic translations made during the caliphates.

At one point I had occasion to read most of the Conan stories, and felt that there was a slight 1001 Nights vibe to many of them; I wouldn't be surprised to find that it had some influence on Howard's work. It's a setting that I could imagine DM-ing something in, and would certainly be up for playing that setting.

Arabian Nights type settings come with a ton of modern day baggage. I mean, Sinbad was based out of Baghdad for many of his adventures. And Syria is a major player in a lot of tales from that region. I'm sure you can see the reason why they're out of fashion these days...

nice! hello fellow washingtonian! I think it's better than Spokomptonite ;)

good population of us here.

Add another citizen of WAAAAA! to the list.

And another fan of Al-Qadim. I had the boxed set for years and then lucked into a massive lot of AQ on eBay years ago. I've never done much with it, but it sure is purty!

Someday I will write a Fantasy Persia game....
I hear there is another guy in this thread who is looking to do something in that space.

I would LOVE a fantasy Persian game.

While SoUT is inspired by Sumer and Akkad, which admittedly were situated on the same territory, it was in a different time period. Consequently, SoUT, of which you can see I'm a backer, is inspired way more by Gilgamesh than by Shahname:smile:.
Or at least that's how I'd run it, the setting info is admittedly kinda sparse, and there's indeed some overlap:wink:!

Never read it, just brought it up because it billed itself as inspired by “Persian mythology”.

It's an element of a lot of early sword and sorcery and fantasy (And even Sword and Planet for that matter - look at how many paintings of sword and planet covers have buildings that look like minarets).

Just look at the background to this cover.

It's the legacy of a lot of nineteenth century adventures and colonial tales. Kipling. Richard Burton, etc.
That's one of the reason why Conan generally doesn't spend all that much time in any kind of fantasy Europe equivalent. That's not where the adventure was!

At some point fantasy became all Northern European and Tolkienish and was the lesser for it.

Never fear! Islamic law allows for multiple wives! There is room aboard my dhow for both Farah and Margiana!

I downloaded and printed it out for use someday!
It allows for four. Choose wisely.

On topic: I've always wanted to get into Al-Qadim, but I was never able to get the box set or the books.

And I'm too damn poor to spend money on a setting I'll likely never use...

Vile villain? Check!
Dashing hero? Check!
Beauteous damsel? Check!
Horrible monsters? Check!
Ocean voyages? Check!
Exotic locales? Check!
Thrilling sword fights? Check!
Wondrous treasures? Check!
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad may be my favorite fantasy film. I think I may have to put it on tomorrow to watch while doing laundry.

Interesting. Written by the same chap who did The Professionals and The Avengers.

I’ve always liked Al-Qadim, but I won’t wait for an official WotC 5e release.

I’m sure that I’d prefer the tone and nostalgic artwork of the originals. I think I’ll score the pdfs and convert to 5e on the fly.
