Published railroad scenarios in D&D didn’t really start until Dragonlance, so that’s not exactly true.
As to what the term OSR even means now, I’m not entirely sure? Early on it was just a loose community of people that coalesced around the notion of playing earlier versions of D&D and a...
There's a lot of settings I really like (Moorcock's Young Kingdoms is right up there, and Jack Vance's Lyonesse), but ultimately I settled on Dolmenwood (OSR). Just the perfect blend of fairytale weirdness and gameable stuff.
Aside from the gap in my early to mid twenties when I was more interested in getting laid and going to clubs/bars, it's 36 years . . . Am I officially old?
I feel you. I grew up in the country, so if I missed that bus, it was 5 miles on a BMX to elementary school, or a 15 mile ride on my ten-speed to junior high and high school. Let's just say I was in great shape as someone who liked to sleep in.
Yeah . . . well 12 year-olds were a lot more mature back then. Most of them were chimney sweeps, loggers, farm hands, and were required to walk ten miles one-way to school every day and lived off of scrounged up wood grubs, and handmade their own clothes . . . or at least that's the way it was...
The people I play with are all super chill and open to playing all sorts of rulesets ( and we don’t play D&D) but in the past when I was a player unhappy with whatever flavor of D&D someone was running, I’d just keep my mouth shut or shuffle off to find another game.
If anybody is so entitled...
I think World Anvil is a little over the top, but I guess if you like complexity and need its features it certainly works. I used it and Obsidian Portal for awhile, but finally settled on https://rolescape.io/ which has just enough of what I want and not a lot of cruft. I've also been using...
The words "Basic" and "Advanced" also had a huge impact on me and my friends when were were 12. Basic implied, "it's for babies" and Advanced promised a more mature and sophisticated game. Maybe things are different now, but back then, nobody I know at 12 wanted to be thought of as a child or a...
Is BECMI some huge nostalgia trip somewhere that I don't know about? I'm pretty middle of the road GenX and while the Redbox Mentzer set was my first exposure to D&D/RPGs, and I was instantly drawn in by the awesome Elmore box art and all of the interior illustrations, that's about where I see...
As time permits (between work and renovating my house) I've been having a great time with the game and have treated my first play-though as a sort of experiment with the mechanics and all of the classes, respeccing my main character and companions like crazy just to see how D&D 5e really works...
