As pretty much always, I think the thing to do is to roll when it makes sense that there is a chance of an uncertain significant result.
And, it's also vital to have the roll be appropriate to the situation, taking into account the fullness of the situation, including the abilities of the...
GM: "Ok, so you all try to climb over that wall?"
George: "Yup."
Paul: "Mhmm . . ." [rolls dice]
Dave: "There is no try!"
GM: "George and Dave easily make it over. Paul, you were nervous about making it over or not, so let's check that roll to see if your nerves messed up your attempt . . ."...
Depends on the system and its focus. (What I meant was, in the situation supposedly represented in the game, when someone has a weapon that would, if the situation were real, have some chance of hitting and killing the PC.)
I am pretty happy with TFT's version on this, where a strong hit with a...
As a player, I don't know nor suspect that a GM is rolling for no reason.
As a player, I love it when the GM seems to be taking the game situation seriously, and that there are complex situations and mechanics in play, many of which would call for the GM to make lots of hidden rolls. (e.g. Do...
Well maybe . . . but it seems like they just went along with whatever madness the GM offered. I tended to sense it coming and would do things to avoid it. They kept making new characters and joining the GM's later campaigns, so I don't think they were trying to escape the campaigns.
I think that both death-during-chargen, and unbalanced random stats/traits, can make sense and be a lot of fun, if it's framed, as @A Fiery Flying Roll just mentioned, as a mini-game, which can be done is several ways.
The missing ingredient (both in D&D and in Classic Traveller IIRC) is some...
I'm very anti-fudge. I think more often than not, the GM who thinks they're improving a game by fudging, isn't as wise about that as they think they are, and that it tends to deeply undermine a game when the GM is messing with die rolls for such reasons.
However . . . there is a version of @T...
Thanks for the detailed explanation, @ffilz!
Yes. One friend of mine got pretty excited about the idea of making a computer game that would prevent players from playing another character after their character died.
And there are of course quite a few players who have decided to stop playing a...
Huh? I'm even more confused why you too seem to think it makes sense to repeat the obviously-true and seemingly irrelevant distraction about the distinction between obviously non-existent danger to players and to PCs. Is this #1 (a joke that won't end), or #2 (a point that I still don't see)?
I...
I'm really confused by this. Is this just a joke, or do you have a point, or do you not understand what I was saying?
Well that's A set of questions. The answers have been pretty clear to me and most of the people I've enjoyed playing with:
* Lots of things make a game fun, but one of the main...
