‘Let’s discuss this in private,’ I say.

"Sure", Volodimir nodded and rose. "Let's find a place. Bai Zhiyi, are you coming?"

"Sure", Volodimir nodded and rose. "Let's find a place. Bai Zhiyi, are you coming?"
"For now," she says. "I don't have a lot of options at the moment. If you want privacy, you can rent a small lounge pretty cheap on the lower decks."

"Good. Let's rent one, and congregate quickly, so we could return with answers to Captain Gershon in a timely manner".

Once we're out of earshot and settled I say. 'Nils and I have another option which while crazy sounding at least sounds more legal. Which considering our issues on the last planet I think is the better option.'

"It's also right up our alley Commander, boarding a drifting hulk for decent enough pay per day"

"I'm not married to unlawful plans, people! In fact, I'd much rather avoid them...but that's the only offer we found. However, if you've got a better one, I'm all ears - I'd just need to inform Gershon not to count on us. Because that's the polite thing to do, after all - and someday he might have a better offer for us. He seems like an infobroker."

Trip adds "I'm not going to turn down illegal work. We need to be careful not burn any extra legal contacts if we get more heat. But I still would prefer to do legal work."

Volodimir nods.
"Glad to see we two are on the same page, Trip. Now, what is the counter-offer?"

Before you discuss your options, Bai Zhiyi leads you back to the elevator and takes you down to a lower level, down a corridor, and to a row of doors with credit slots and credit-reading sensors built into the wall beside them. Per the instructional placard, if one of you swipes your credit stick or deposits 10 credits, you can rent the lounge for an hour. Through a transparent pane you can see the lounge is Spartan but sufficient for your needs. The placard also guarantees no electronic monitoring occurs within the lounges.

OOC: You mean "before", not "while".

Nils pays for the room with a swipe of his credit stick.

"Alright, give us the details of your job first" he says to Trip and Volodimir as he sits down.

"According to Captain Gerson, a certain painting was taken as spoils of war a few years past and the original owner wants it retrieved without having to resort to lawyers and courts that could take decades. The owner, presumably the noble we heard mentioned, offered to pay two million credits and ask no questions - though the 2 milions would be split 8-ways, as you heard. Again, Gershon says it's reported to be en route to this station, so he's trying to find the right crew - one that could hijack the ship it's on, or perhaps simply get aboard and recover the painting", Volodimir explains.
"Also, divulging such information to the authorities would result in prices being offered for our heads, so accept or deny, I insist we should remain silent. No authorities are likely to be friendly now, anyway."

"Impressive money..." Nils muses "...and dangerous in equal measure. Our offer was 500Crs a day to go out and investigate a drifting hulk, with..." he pauses and laughs lightly "...alien tech on board. Specifically the crew were studying a cylindrical alien starship"

"5000 cr each, or for all of us?", Volodimir inquires.

"Whatever the number is, the question doesn't change", Volodimir shrugs.

'Should we vote or leave the decision to our brave leader?' I say with a wry smile.

Nils pauses with a cheesy grin.

"...well now that you mention it he did say just 500Cr a day. Probably we'll have to split that. We should double check.

It's a safer job, but since there probably isn't an alien vessel there it's far less money. What's the time limit on your one? Any chance we could check out this space hulk and return in time to snag that painting?"

"Well, I got the impression that he's leery of sharing that kind of info until and unless we have agreed. But I think it's a short-term job, so we should probably choose...and I vote for the safer one. If it's all expenses paid."

"Agreed" Nils says flatly, hiding his internal excitement at a possible alien vessel.

'Agreed,' I say. 'Should we jet and meet the old man?'

"Yes. We just have to send a message to Captain Gershon...Bai, is there a courrier service on the station? And are you joining for this job?"

"Alien ship sounds like the kind of change I could go for. Hopefully this doesn't piss off Captain Gershon. " Trip says a bit relieved to be doing something legal.

"Well, I never promised we'd accept. But of course we'll guarantee our discreetness", Volodimir says calmly.

"Yes. We just have to send a message to Captain Gershon...Bai, is there a courrier service on the station? And are you joining for this job?"
"I'll try my luck signing on with Captain Gershon. I'll tell him you've passed on his offer."

Volodimir looks her over, brows raised.
"I can't stop you...but didn't you want to avoid illegal actions? Either way, if you insist, that would work. Please, also assure him none of us would spill the beans. Right, guys?"

"I'll take illegal over insane," responds Bai Zhiyi. "I'll let the captain know you'll uphold thieves' honor."

Nils looks to Eloise.

"Yeah let's head"

He nods at Bai.

"Good luck out there"

"I'll take illegal over insane," responds Bai Zhiyi. "I'll let the captain know you'll uphold thieves' honor."
"Wait. They say it's 'simple walk in the space', you say 'madness'. Do you happen to know anything about this aliens-hunt?", Volodimir asks.

"Every schoolchild knows there are no extraterrestrial sophonts extant in the galaxy," Bai Zhiyi replies, rolling her eyes at the very notion.

'I hope you'd come with, Bai,' I say. 'With no real aliens the job is even safer!'

"Indeed. But what's wrong with being bored to get paid?"

"Boredom sounds good to me. We could use a break." Trip comments

"Indeed", Volodimir nods. "Unless the station has some kind of daily tax or the like...but then we wouldn't pay it while at this job, right?"

'I hope you'd come with, Bai,' I say. 'With no real aliens the job is even safer!'
"I don't know about that, you guys haven't given me any money and all you've done for me so far is shoot me," Bai Zhiyi replies, nodding at Trip. "Almost anything seems safer than being around you trigger-happy Marines."

I laugh. 'True enough I guess.'

'So what's the decision boys?'

"Oh yes...the money", Volodimir slaps his forehead, before he hands Bai 500 credits.
"You introduced them to Gershon, we didn't take the job...so it's 500, right? Oh, and just so you know...me and Nils are the Marines. He's also former military", he nods at Trip, "but not Marine...and sole representative of his branch in our group. So you weren't, in fact, shot by a trigger-happy Marine. Again, I'm sorry for that incident. I wish I'd reacted in time to prevent it...but what happened, happened. There's also other bullets I wish I could take back, but if wishes were fishes, I'd never have to work for food in my life..."
He shrugs, smiling, and hands her his hand.
"Good bye. And good luck."

Then he turns towards Eloise.
"It seems most of us, our leader included, favour the hunting of made-up aliens, paid per the day...I haven't heard you voicing a firm preference, but unless you have any objections, I'd recommend going there and taking the offer before someone else does."

"Yep. It's a bug hunt".
"You wish!"
