You’re a sick man! :-)
University students are far too clever to need advice from the likes of me, obviously. But if they were willing to listen, this is what I'd tell them:

"Until now you've been in an environment where almost every adult you met was invested in your success, to a greater or lesser degree. Now you're in an environment where every adult is invested in their own success and want you to contribute something to them."

Just spent the day spring-cleaning, even though it's October. Nearly 5pm and haven't eaten yet, also ache a bit.

Peel towers were set up at the Northern borders. After being largely abandoned in the late Middle Ages, they were said to be home to a certain malicious type of Goblin called a Redcap, as they would dye their hats red by soaking it in the blood of their victims

Southern borders, thank you

They stayed in use until Elizabethan-Stuart times, when the Border Marches became the "Middle Marches". Very few people bothered to drag a cannon across the hills to capture one, so they stayed in use as homes longer than many bigger castles.

You may also want to look up "bastle house", a type of fortified farmhouse in use at the same time.

Why yes, I am a Border Scot!

We occasionally get university students in for work experience. I watch them closely in the hope I can witness the moment their spirit breaks and their hopes and expectations wither like untended roses.

I love Pitchshifter's As Seen on TV

Specifically this part in the opening
and the jobs you get once you graduate are stupid, boring, meaningless, and a dead end to insanity.
It sounds as though you live to see the moment these young people realize the truth of that. Song came out in 2001 and is still just as relevant today.

I wonder if he ever got the diodes in his left leg taken care of.

Marvin's perseverance in spite of tremendous pessimism made him a role model to me. Mr Moore's voice captured the spirit of Marvin perfectly.

Life, don't talk to me about life.

RIP

Although I live in Chicago, I grew up in Seattle and am a big fan of the Seattle Seahawks football team. Yesterday, I was trying to watch the game via NFL Sunday Ticket on my PS3 & it stopped working about 2 minutes into the game . Tried a few fixes, but nothing worked. Finally, at halftime, I decided to head to the one bar I knew would have the game on. Got there right as Russell Wilson worked some Russell Wilson magic & made an amazing touchdown pass. The place went nuts! Eventually someone left & there was actually a spot for me to sit down & watch the rest of the game. My team won, everyone was having a great time, strangers gave me high fives when the Seahawks made great plays, etc. I'm really glad I went. I had been feeling a bit sad and lonely before I went out, but the event definitely lifted my spirits.

I thought only Exalted cause so much collateral damage?
Because the victims of this fight would number in the thousands.

It was a set-up by Luthor. He had just finished building a new community as a gift to Metropolis, so it hadn’t been occupied yet. Superman thought that he was pulling his old tricks and that there was a bomb below it because he could see strange devices below it with his X-Ray vision. The fight seen above proceeds as Capt Marvel, being the naive superhero, thinks Lex is being good this time. It ends up that Superman doesn’t find any bomb and has to apologize to Luthor. Cut to later and we see Luthor laughing about the whole charade as Superman was seen on national TV destroying his gift.

It was run by Kryptonite though--which is why Superman reacted. (Though I'm very tired of them forgetting Cap has the Wisdom of Solomon to back him up.)

Anyway, I've had to reframe my superhero story, which is frustrating but I can save most of it with the reframe and rewrite. Though it hits much harder at the beginning, more so than I want, but it is unavoidable eventually. It does allow me to build up both heroes who are the focus better this way.

I think JLU would have been better if it had added a few iconics to the big 7, like the great job they did with Captain Marvel and Green Arrow. I think going to full on mega-league diluted the chance to properly develop some characters.

Still a great show.

A little over a year ago, my right eye got seriously fucked up. If I had waited one day longer to go to the doctor, I wouldn't have a right eye anymore. Was temporarily legally blind in that eye, missed work for almost a month, etc.

I've recovered to a drastic degree, although my vision is still significantly worse than it was prior to the injury. BUT- I went to the eye doctor yesterday, and my eye has finally stabilized enough that he was able to give me a new glasses prescription!! So excited!!! I will be shopping for glasses on Friday.

(If anyone is curious about the details, bacterial infection-> corneal ulcer-> scarring on eyeball. The most common cause of this sort of bacterial infection is wearing dirty contact lenses, but I was meticulous about taking care of my contact lenses, so I'll never know for sure what actually caused it. But I'm never wearing contact lenses again!!)

Got this in my mailbox...I feel I've been racially profiled...

As someone who keeps getting automated emails about Saint Patrick's Day events at several of the bars and restaurants in Roanoke every March, you have my sympathy. I know it's not quite the same, but still.

You win one drinking contest over at The Coffee Pot and suddenly you're on the mailing lists of every bar in the Roanoke Valley forever...I didn't even know bars had promotional emails until then.

Although I'd personally go just for the free hot chocolate, racial profiling be damned....

LOL i.e. the world outside of childhood and academia.

It is sad how true that is. I always tried to advance the careers of my subordinates. It used to annoy the crap out of other supervisors that my employees actually liked working for me. They couldn't figure out it was just because I didn't treat my employees like disposable cogs.

We went for a hike in National Park Veluwezoom yesterday.

According to my wife, who studied mycology, there's at least five different species of mushroom growing on this stump. Can you spot them?

A big and a small fly agaric.

It has been raining a lot recently. The place was wet and teeming with mushrooms.

In a healthy employment relationship both parties are trying to advance the other understanding it's best for both of them.

My coffee roaster is not roasting. But the test-cycle fires off and it goes through every system without a hitch... ARRRGHHH...

It's like having raw unprocessed Ryll spice... and the assholes on Tatooine that's supposed to be doing the processing are on strike. And I'm over here taking CRITS because I needs my Sarlacc Juice. CRITS I tell you!!!

The sad part... one of our current interns is my son...

But that means I *should* bite him because it shows I'm not really doing the nepotism thing. But then at the same time I have this family loyalty thing. Decisions decisions...

They don't caffinate enough. It's too dilute.

There is truth in this. I should be cutting back anyhow...

.... oh who the hell am I kidding? I had 6 double-espressos last night...

It's my day off today and I mostly need to spend it doing boring-but-necessary #adulting.

But for a bit of fun, I picked up the GRAmel Savage Worlds bundle on drivethrurpg. Although I'm pretty low on spending money at the moment, nearly $400 of rpg pdfs for $20 was a deal I could not resist.

lol, that's the ball used by trainers to capture wild Pokemon...

So now you really should shove your son in a ball
