And that's better narratively than a lot of what they've put on the screen, and just as tense. The only thing that bugs me is the saber resting on the body at the end.

I'll admit I didn't' want a lot of movies released in the time period, but there had to be a better scifi movie that qualified.

The previous award for Best Science-Fiction Movie went to Ready Player One, so it doesn't seem like the Saturn Awards are a gold standard of quality.

I've seen all of those films except for Gemini Man and my favourite is Lucy in the Sky by Noah Hawley. It isn't perfect but it is interesting.

But it shows how silly these kind of awards can be as Lucy is essentially a realistic, character-based drama. Comparing it to Tenet or Terminator: Dark Fate (both of which are fun but flawed in their own ways) makes as much sense as comparing The Elephant Man to Die Hard.

I watched The Rise of Skywalker again a couple nights ago after reading this because I wanted to torture myself again. There’s some genuinely “Star Wars” stuff in the movie, but it all just falls apart the more you think about it, which really doesn’t need to be more than a few seconds.

I think what really gets my goat are two things: one, they made Rey somebody instead of the nobody she was in the last movie and two, Anakin Fucking Skywalker should have had more than a couple of voice-over lines. Disney is trying to make up for their mistake by bringing back Christensen in pretty much everything now, but the damage was done.

The damage was done the day Christensen was hired in the first place.

I don’t believe that. He is a competent actor. Lucas should have hired somebody else to direct. Natalie Portman can act and those were some of her worst performances ever. Sam Jackson had some of the worst line readings ever in RotS.

Here are the other nominees that Rise of Skywalker was up against for comparisons sake.

  • Ad Astra
  • Gemini Man
  • Lucy in the Sky
  • Tenet
  • Terminator: Dark Fate
I haven't seen any of them, so I have no real opinion here.
Think I might have given it to Tenet of those listed.

Edit: Voros Voros Very much agree about "Lucy in the Sky" really not the same kinda movie as the others.

I didn't know that Noah Hawley had done a movie. I'm going to make that a priority. Even a flawed move from him should be worth a look.

I rather liked Gemini Man, and would have probably given that one the nod. But that's damning with faint praise, in all honesty.

Christensen was not the problem. Look at him in other works, and he's a lot better. The problem was firmly in the director's chair, IMO.

The only actor who somehow put up a good performance in the prequel trilogies was Ewan McGregor. Like, there is still awkwardness here and there, but for the most part his young Obi-wan was enjoyable.

I wasn't going to say anything about Portman because we saw what happens when she phones it in (see Thor). I mean, she had Kenneth Branagh directing, and that was the best she could do?

Yeah but the MCU films tend to flatten the character of the individual directors, there was nothing of Branagh in the rather middling Thor imo.

I saw him in Asgard. His signature was all over that. And even if they do flatten the character of the director, that still doesn't excuse Portman when everyone else came off a lot better.

On the subject of actors having to try to carry garbage: The sequel trilogy also has it's fair share of actually great actors. Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Domnhall Gleeson are all fantastic in other movies.

(I actually like Adam Driver for the most part as Kylo Ren, his acting is great throughout... even if what he is given to work with is not).

They were like tasty crackers floating in a river of shit. Those crackers still taste like shit when you eat them, better to just let them float past and feel ok about things.

Because this thread should not just be about memes...something to look forward to.

Just wish this was coming out in November rather than having to wait a few months...

I always thought of Boba as overrated, probably because of the way he was portrayed in the OT. It’s stuck there.

I always enjoyed the Sarlacc Pit belching him up in the Marvel comic.

The only one of these I've seen is Dark Fate, which was both criminally underrated and hands-down better than TROS on every conceivable front save "being a Star Wars movie".

The Boba Fett hype always baffled me.

Successes = Figured out that Han hid the 'Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back. Was given Han as a freebie by 'Vadar.
Failures = Everything else. Didn't catch his own bounty, didn't spot Leia as an imposter, didn't detect the conspiracy against Jabba, didn't stop any of the escapees, got eaten by a pit.

How did this guy become the wet dream of fanboys everywhere despite being an utter failure? Cool helmet...
Same for Darth Maul. He sucked too. Cool tattoos...

I'm all for Boba Fett in The Book of Boba Fett (stupid name for a show by the way) being a completely different character in every way that matters. He was cool in the Mandalorian and I'm happy to see that portrayal continue.

The thing about Boba is he could have attempted to shoot Luke from the top of the barge since he’s probably one of the best shots in the galaxy but decides to take him on at close range, which is like a gift to any Jedi, and Luke is no average Jedi even in his youth. From that point on, it’s like a comedy routine.
