Age of Decadence is not in space, but your character can't advance much and if they're not combat oriented you have to avoid fights and so on.

But few CRPGs are not zero to hero fantasy games. I've found people who play only them and D&D (in a way inspired by them) often cannot imagine anything else being an RPG.

I am okay with advancement — I’d totally add a slow advancement system to CT, MgT1 or Cepheus — but it’s the “have starship, will travel” ethos I’d like to indulge. (Bonus if it’s multiplayer)

No game like that I think
I should have been clearer above, I've no problem myself with advancement but I feel many people only have experience of games where advancement itself is a minigame and half the point of playing. Basically there's a lot of people who play fantasy CRPGs and Pathfinder and actually have a hard time with games where advancement isn't the focus.

The Outer Wilds is one of the best video games I've played in years and captures the sandbox and sense of wonder of OG Traveller I think.

The premise sounds amazing but I’m sure I’d call it “Travelleresque” in the sense I’m thinking of. Maybe EVE Online or Elite: Dangerous are closer to what I’m thinking of, though I’d rather they weren’t MMOs. No Man’s Sky, maybe?
