  • Who here is from the Philippines? Or elsewhere in Southeast Asia? I want recommendations of authentic music!
To clarify with an example, it's way too easy to find "folk" music that carries the country's name, but the natives immediately recognize as not authentic. (I found some such examples of Bulgarian music recently).

Thanks, Voros Voros but while I've found examples of Gamelan music, I'm kinda at a loss which ones would be considered "authentic" by a native. And since you've mentioned your wife is from the region, I figured you might be able to help:thumbsup:.

Gamelon is definitely 'authentic.' Most of the Phillipino music we listen to is rock, lol.

No, I meant which specific performances would rate as authentic. For example, I found recently something named "Bulgarian Folk Music" which...wasn't.
Now, I'm all for an artist using our music for inspiration - the only problem is that it wasn't announced as such. Thus, a foreigner might come to the wrong conclusion about Bulgarian music.
So I want to avoid those videos.

Pushed rolls in CoC7e, example.Me: "I play the piano to impress the ladies at the gathering".

    Dice: "You fail, sucker!"

Me: "I see I'm failing, and I try to improvise something to cover it up". (Fully possible according to my piano experience).

GM: "It's a pushed roll - if you fail, you're going to have to suffer some negative social consequences".

    Me: "Pass me those dice".

Same thing would apply for combat, I imagine. "I try to take him down, hard, osotogarying the fuck out of him". "You fail to unbalance him backwards, and he prevents you from putting his leg behind his". "I use his resistance to switch to a sacrificial throw, like sumi-gaeshi". "If you fail, you're going to end up under him, with him in a prime position to batter you". "I know. I still do".
"Have you ever been in shape?" - rando elder woman visiting the same fitness as me. She has no issues with the stretching parts, herself, for which I kinda envy her...but not for running out of gas on the strength parts of the workout.
"Yes, I have been - earlier. Besides I'm in an ideal shape now as well: a round one, an ideal form in geometry" - me, not paying much attention (other than being surprised).

    Compare and contrast...
"Don't worry about not being able to do more than 6 push-ups. I was in a similar shape when I joined the gym...and you've got better stretching than me already." - me, also today, at the BJJ academy "Open Mat", towards an woman younger than me. I don't know her name, either, and I think I've seen her twice before (unlike the one in the main post, which I'd never seen before IIRC).

And now I'm wondering: what is it about martial arts that makes people (relatively) more considerate towards physical limitations?

Is it the concept that you must strive to improve your whole life? The concept that everyone is walking his or her own Way? The fact that you can substitute skill in other areas to compensate for physical weaknesses?

For now, I'm going to bet on "the higher odds of getting your behind kicked if you behave improperly", though:angel:.

Mind you, my coach is finding it funny that I'm still struggling with some relatively simple (even for newbies) exercises. But he probably also finds it funny that I can and do roll despite that.
"Because we are experiencing an accumulation of at least four crises..."- Sharan Burrow, General Secretary of the ITUC.
    Me: "Exalted, anyone?"
Today (technically yesterday) was Saint George's Day here, a national holiday...and personally for me, one of the greatest days I've had:angel:. Especially lately.
    I needed that:thumbsup:!
    From Westlands: "Equipment
This chapter describes common tools, weapons, and other items used by adventurers, sorcerers, barbarians, and plucky Earthlings trapped underneath alien skies".
    Best chapter description ever!
I just had to edit out the name of a French official. Why? Well, because part of it is the same as a word that means "cock"...and not as a birdie.
Now I'm wondering what my name means in Swahili, Japanese and a few other languages:devil:.
I think me, CRKrueger CRKrueger and Raleel Raleel should make an official welcoming ceremony for Necrozius Necrozius for his joining of the Cult of Mythras. Loz Loz could give us some suggestions, maybe.
Preferably stuff that doesn't involve killing bulls. It's hard to arrange over Internet.

Admittedly, I had to make the Fir Bolg and the Tuatha de Dannan two different pre-Gaelic civilisations which both retreated from the world in different ways...but I hope you wouldn't mind:shade:?
As of today, me and all the kids* in the family are training BJJ together:devil:!

*The ones below 18, at least:shade:!
Today was a great day. First Son went to BJJ and liked it! He even behaved well.
Second Son declared he wants to go where Big Brother and Big Sister are going.
Then we had grappling night before going to sleep.
    I felt weird today.
I saw a group of obvious schoolchildren (definitely below 14 yo). They were trying to be offensive to each other... using the so-called "N-word"...
I mean, WTF? None of them was black. Odds are they've never seen anyone black IRL (it's Bulgaria here).

I expect Odysee to have a bigger following in Bulgaria, and possibly in Serbia and North Macedonia...
Why? Because in Bulglish, Serblish and Northmacedonglish, "Ody See" clearly means "Go See". If local internet users don't find that hilarious...well, then I know neither my compatriotes, nor our neighbours:shade:!

I'm not going to tell you you should. I'm going to tell you it's an incredibly rich language, and hey, it's got no cases these days:wink:!

I've been doing a bit of reading and it's rated similarly to Greek for an English speaker, so definitely hard but not Arabic or Chinese level hard. I ordered Colloquial Bulgarian, since it seemed to get the best ratings as an introduction. Linguistically it's the most dialect rich Slavic language apparently.
Interesting note: the BJJ butterfly guard is present in some silat and capoeira applications. What if one starts switching from one to the other:devil:?
Tonight, I have work to do for my job. So of course, I just have to start by testing my lifepath chargen for Fight!: the Fighting Game RPG 2e:grin:!

Bottom line: I did most of the work...on the following day. And the lifepath chargen took a couple days longer.
I blame "the latest dumpster fire thread"...and really need to stop participating in those:shade:.
I'm just sooo tired of scandals with the family!
How tired? Well, tired enough that I'm at the point where I have been considering dropping RPGs altogether. I mean, we tend to play together, adults in the family are part of my group, but lately this just leads to more screaming and nagging.
And I really can use a break from that!
But honestly, if the scandals continue, one of us would have to go. Regardless of RPGs.
I just read the description of the "Queen of Martian Catacombs" and the changes made to the original story to turn it into "The Secret of Sinharat". Still torn which one I like better...but they also show well the two different approaches to RPG Refereeing.
    AsenRG
    AsenRG
    What are the differences?
"Queen of the Martian Catacombs" has the more romantic, one would almost say "narrative", ending... it is also the better story, IMO. That editor knew his job.
"The Secret of Sinharat" is much more believable and overall, what I strive for in an RPG.

Bottom line? Earth-shaking conclusions? Nope. Nothing of the sorts! I just like Leigh Brackett, that's all:grin:!

It's amazing to watch the reaction to the nuT$R expressing some opinions held by the majority of people in my country.
But this ain't about the opinions themselves, thanks to Rule 0. I'm just wandering what a native Tekumelian would feel like listening to the talk in a pub in Golarion or the Forgotten Realms!

    Exalted using 2d6:
-Choose Caste. This should give you the equivalent of 2 skills (skills shall be more broadly defined than Exalted proper).
    -Choose Hobby (more narrowly applicable)
    -Choose Talents.
-Choose 1-3 Traits. Yes, the number is rolled.
Resolution: roll 2d6. For every single of the above that applies, add +3 if you're Celestial, +2 for Terrestrial/God-blooded? and +1 for Heroic Mortals.

Yeah. Gaming forums are full of people who would be mortally offended if they were told something was wrong with them because of the type of music they liked, the sports they preferred to follow, the foods they found tasty or the pets they preferred (or not) to keep ... but have ZERO problem with raining hate down onto others for the exact ways they differ playing make-pretend games.
