  • Sunday, Game Day at Diligence club: I am going to be running a BoL game...set in Batubatan.
    I should start a thread.
Second Son sent his mother to hospital (after possibly breaking one of my teeth the day before). I'm not sure whether she shares my joy that he is obviously my own flesh and blood:grin:!

Neither sounds like a happy occasion, to be honest

Well, what can I say? Let me quote a smart man.
"Weird, crazy shit is going to happen. You can either laugh or cry. It hurts less to laugh". - @Gronan of Simmerya
Currently moving some RPG files to an external hard drive in order to free some modest 30 GB of HDD space.
And that's less than half of my RPGs. And I'm not moving the ones that I'm currently using.
    I just like many games.
    "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown!"
"No. It's never Chinatown while I can breath!"
Something I just want to say in a game, sometime:smile:.
"Fans of classless systems are a majority on forums, but a minority in RL games". I've heard this so much I've come to doubt it:smile:.
More like, "fans of class systems are focused on the same class system, fans of classless systems have more diverse tastes", I suspect.
    Happy Rooster's Day, guys:grin:!
(It's considered "Man's day" here...though in later years, it's become pejoratively known as "gay day", because "manly love", obviously. Our holidays are complicated!)
I just LOVE Traveller... more than some of my exes, now that I think of it!

It's not even close to being my first, nor tenth for that matter. But still...
Today I started showing the Bigger Son pictures of fighting techniques. I wonder how long before I can try to get him to play, too!
Mine is a family where people over a certain age having their personal blades for everyday carry is simply a fact of life.
Kerambits are quite popular (and this type of blade actually has a few Bulgarian names, since it's been in use here for millennia). But balisongs are just nice!
I just realised something...if you use the rules for Randomly determining opposition in CT, the rules actually work pretty much like Usagi Yojimbo/Urban Jungle/Vital Hearts by Sanguine. Except CT has less crunch mostly (when it comes to equipment, CT has more).
    Huh, interesting.
    AsenRG
    AsenRG
I found some more similarities between those two and then thought, "OK, so Sanguine guys have probably played Traveller...oh wait, Aslan, Vargr and K'Kree. Of course they have!"
    Case solved, moving on!
For the record, I really like the wounds mechanic of Iconclaw/Usagi Yojimbo, as well as their Counterattack/Dodge/Parry mechanic (except for the part where shields don't help to counter, which is gamist).

    How about

    “The Martial Arts Thread”

Works for me. But it's likely to be a very different thread depending on which forum it's in;)!

And on re-reading the thread we started, now we know why I had my doubts about starting it... I mean, Shawn Thompkins (MMA trainer), Fedor Emelianenko and Anderson Silva say in their instructional books that due to the small gloves used in MMA, covering sucks as a defense, but a random user on an RPG forum is sure that it's the only defence that works up-close with no gloves.
Right. I'll stick to my statuses.
"The highest form of flattery is not imitation; but taking the seed of inspiration and cultivate your own garden." - Leo T. Fong
    Last few days are fun!
My 2yo son used a kerambit for the first time. (It was a folder and I allowed him to use the handle's spike to break the ice - literally - on the kid's slide).
I'm playing Sleeping Dogs, taking notes for RPG campaigns. I *love* that game almost as much as Fallout, now, and might end up liking it even more!
Also, training Wing Chun/JKD, and liking it more than I expected (revisiting sambo soon).

A friend from BJJ teaches Wing Chun virtually next door to work. How do you like it?

Which one, BJJ or Wing Chun (that style really has an unfortunate abbreviation)?
BJJ is great fun, great exercise, and teaches you skills that might be potentially useful in a self-defense situation.
Wing Chun is, for me, a style best approached with meticulousness and attention to structure, angles, opposing lines, and working by touch. It should also enable you to apply more of your BJJ-derived skills in standing.

Many people would say that Wing Chun is very simple. You attack forward, without turning sideways to prevent someone from getting a favourable position. If you meet opposing limbs, you clear them away and keep blasting.
Developing the abilities required to do that is what takes all the training time.
...or those people might not know the whole picture. It's hard to say, because I sure don't know it, either:smile:!
Next time you hear about preserving a tradition, any tradition, remember this quote:
"You must surpass me. If the student does not surpass the teacher, then the art begins to die." —Wang Kiu
It's a full traditional quote - by a traditional master (google the name and Ip Man together...)!
I just deleted most of my OSR folder, because I don't expect to use it at the table. As it turns out, there were over 4 GB of games in there!

All kind of systems...but they really hate the "you hit him with your axe, he loses X HP, and he's fine - he can take Y more hits, in fact". I guess it's something about the dissonance between "you hit him with an AXE", and "he's fine to go", and especially "can take Y more hits". OTOH, highly lethal systems where nobody gets a pass barring magic, are usually welcome.

Play hit points as written — abstract measure of combat fitness that combines physical integrity, stamina, avoidance, dumb luck and divine favor. Also encourage combat stunts and mobility.

Do you really think I haven't thought of that? Or that I haven't tried?
It doesn't work for them, and for that matter, I don't really like it, either.
Reading Bob Breen's book on fighting. His background story seemed...curiously familiar.
I just disagree with some stuff, but it's a good thing. It means he's inviting me for dialogue.
Thinking how to combine silat, wing chun, HEMA Ringen, and Bulgarian folk wrestling. They actually fit almost frighteningly well together!

The more interesting part is that I've barely studied Wing Chun. And my only Silat is self-taught.
LMAO...I just can't remember how many times I was told by kick-boxers that trapping doesn't work. And yet...

@Johnny Blade : Oh, that - of course! Getting up might well require skill, not just being in good enough shape to change from horizontal to vertical position! Though the lack of rules gives YOU options, too!
    Also, thanks for the reminder.

My point was just that this is the kind of skill you fall back on. So it makes sense to study it once you have the rest more or less in place...and keep in mind that ground-and-pound should not be used in front of witnesses:tongue:!
Working on Bartertown. I've got vampire cults, lizardmen mutants, apocalyptic cults, slavery, drugs...and that's in the first block!

Sounds like a ton of fun! And don’t overthink the system, use whatever you like (that’s not too much work).

It's not about "whatever I like", it's about "what can I legally publish it for". Is Atomic Highway free to use, for example? I've got no idea...yet.
But no worries, once I pick a system, statting it up should be easy.
Ok, now I can blame Sergei Lavrov for not getting to reply to any games tonight:grin:!
Finally: stopped throwing up, and updated my signature.

I don't have such strong feelings towards poor artwork. In fact, I can draw EVEN UGLIER!
    That was a legitimate flu.
I was just going to note that I'm no longer playing any d20 games in PbP. But I joined the OD&D campaign that @Dumarest just started!
