Swords & Wizardry has been out for 15 years and still going strong. Frog God Games have a real winner with their World of the Lost Lands campaign setting. S&W has the best all-in-one complete box set for OSR beginners.
I am also really looking forward to OpenQuest Dungeons. Converting 5e adventures to OpenQuest looks to be a snap and I really prefer d100 based magic systems over DnD Vancian Casting as is the having HP be a fixed value rather than escalating per level.
The only thing really holding me back...
That is really cool and really creepy. I should read this "Hater" series. It sounds like David Moody is basing these creatures off the behavior of online mobs.
As far as Goblins and Orcs, this should come to no surprise but I am a big fan of dark fantasy manga like Berserk or Goblin Slayer!. I...
I really feel like this is where AD&D started losing the plot. The transition from B/X to AD&D is where D&D lost a lot of the simplicity, accessibility and modularity that make the early editions so good.
2nd edition AD&D is not Old School? News to me. :shade:
I jest, but the more I read OSR games especially B/X based games, the more playable I find them. B/X's design is very abstract but it's very elegant in its simplicity. Most NPCs don't have ability scores. All you really need to know...
I feel like I'm weird because I'm the only person I know who actually prefers the old TSR Saving throws and Descending Armor Class/THAC0. I prefer it because I can see the logic underpinning these systems. They are very abstract but they don't try to pretend to be simulationist.
Not effective at all. You would be better served bludgeoning the other person with the engine portion of a chainsaw than trying to hit them with the blade.
This. I thought better of and deleted several replies before this. Let's not fight over what OBS may or may not do. I don't think it's worth it. Only time will tell if this policy gets abused. I don't think it will based on OBS track record so far. Even if it is abused it will just trigger a...
I think this bears repeating. In an internet landscape where members of the in-group on other services can dox people, SWAT people and THREATEN TO KILL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS without consequence (Yes, this is happening. Look it up), while out-group members are banned for being slightly rude, OBS...
Again I think the panic is overblown. OBS new policy seems specifically aimed at getting Venger to stop bad-mouthing DTRPG to market his games. If they were planning to declare certain content "Political" and ban it, why have none of Pundits books been pulled?
If you are concerned, follow the...
OBS do have a de-facto monopoly. When a private entity or group of entities collude to prevent works of art they disapprove of from being published, that is is still Censorship. Period, end of discussion. Both the Hayes Code and the Comics Code Authority are considered historical examples of...
I know, I just think he could go about it better. There's definitely demand for "Too Hot for DTRPG" material. Having his own site would allow him to monetize that stuff more easily instead of just giving it away or making people jump through hoops to send him money.
Again? Really?
You should talk to Grim Jim. James is able to run his own website complete with an online store he owns from which his stuff can't be pulled.
I tend to ignore the Demons vs Devils conflict when I run B/X. To me, it smacks of an attempt to formalize the Law-Chaos, Good-Evil Alignment system into the lore.
I think the B/X Alignment system works better IMHO because it isn't about how your character personally acts and more about where...
Maybe I'm a hipster but I have always preferred the original Terminator. The story it tells is a perfectly functional closed loop. T2, as enjoyable as it was, just feels unnecessary.
While I have no interest in the Age of Sigmar setting per se, I always have interest in non-DnD based Fantasy RPGs.
How is the Age of Sigmar RPG? Is it amenable to running in a custom setting?
Yup. This is one of the major issues that stop me from enjoying 5e. I don't hate the system. 5e has a lot to recommend it. It's very modular and hackable compared to 3.5. Unfortunately, most of the material published for it is very, very sanitized and safe. Most of the really exciting...
I am well aware of all of the above. I would think that, for a modern person, the revelation that there really is something out there would come as a relief. As it is, the reality we are currently facing is that we are alone in a dead universe. That is, IMHO far more existentially terrifying...
