Marketing. Defining the OSR isn't meaningful for your home games, but if you are trying to sell products, you need a community gathered around a defined concept. That's the value of the OSR brand.

OD&D because I can built whatever I want upon the skeleton. I can tailor campaigns with such ease. I don't play OD&D RAW (never have), but the extremely basic chassis and that pure original energy is what draws me.
