D&D versus D&D: The tabletop versus the movie

I read them in my early 20’s and thought they were fine. A few years ago I read them to my son, and I was taken aback at the low quality of the writing. There are so many things they do that are considered to be real amateur mistakes these days, like wandering viewpoints from sentence to...

    The Star Wars Thread

It depends on what you want to get from a show, what resonates with you. I’ve liked stuff that had mediocre writing because something about it clicked with me, and I’ve disliked stuff that had “good” writing because, for example, I couldn’t bring myself to care about the characters (even though...

What streaming service do you get the most value out of?

We keep thinking the same thing about Netflix and then my wife and I go in and end up adding a bunch of stuff to our list. So far, we’ve been lucky in that about 75% of the stuff we try we find good enough to stick with. Then again, if something doesn’t grab us in the first episode (sometimes...

Any tales of GOOD experiences with meta-plot?

I don’t really mind metaplot when it’s confined to GM facing book only. I could be wrong, but I vaguely remember that being the case with the original WoD. After the Player’s Guide, my players didn’t read any other supplements, and I believe the metaplot was consigned to only the books that I as...

Any tales of GOOD experiences with meta-plot?

I ran two Vampire: The Masquerade campaigns in the 90’s. The first was a narrow campaign set in Chicago using the Chicago By Night book and ignored every plot-related element published after that. It was about the vampires in Chicago being trapped in the city due a ritual (that the PCs...

A few thoughts/gripes about recent game modern game design.

I started a bi-weekly online game of 5E with a bunch of friends who are scattered all around the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) back in May of 2020, and we’re closing in on three years of play. They’ve made it up 8th level (milestone levelling for the win) and it’s getting harder to...

    Discounts and deals on RPGs

I’ve used Campaign Cartographer since the early 2000s. It was a good option early on, especially if you didn’t have access (or skill) to create stuff in Photoshop or Illustrator. These days, while I do have the current CC3+ software, I’m finding that it’s still too fiddly, and still has...

    We won! (OGL)

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Especially since that statement doesn’t square with other stuff that’s been said about the paladin being like a 20th level character who joins up with this mediocre party. Rege-Jean Page was on Colbert last week and said something along the lines of “in...

Chaotic Wooster Remembers the Wildstorm Universe

I unabashedly loved the Wildstorm universe back when they were first being published. WildCATS, Stormwatch, Wetworks and Gen13 kicked it off for me, followed later by The Authority and DV-8. DV-8 was the first, and only, comic book I ever sent a fan letter in for, and it got published. I also...

when have RPGs helped you outside of RPGs?

I didn’t spend all those years playing Dungeons & Dragons and not learn a little something about courage.

    Real Life and What's Happening...

Absolutely. I’ve been trying to lose about 20 lbs, and one of the things I changed was no drinking alcohol during the weekdays. But now it’s the weekend and I can’t even have a drink!

    Real Life and What's Happening...

Yesterday morning I woke with stomach cramps and within 10 minutes my body was ridding itself of everything I had consumed in the past week. Couldn’t even keep a sip of water down, and by 11:00 am I was severely dehydrated and getting dizzy. My wife took me to the hospital, and after blood and...

Tell us about something good that you got recently

Well that’s just cool. And you’re less likely to let some idiot play with it and summon a bunch of hooked chains to grab you if it’s a collector’s item. So, win-win.

Tell us about something good that you got recently

I’m not a superstitious guy by any stretch of the imagination, and I don’t believe in ghosts or any supernatural stuff, but I also know I’d never sleep well knowing that was in my house.

    That's What She Said...

Why do companies keep doing countdowns and big reveals when they don’t have anything actually interesting to announce? It’s always the same old disappointment. “Oh, this thing that we talked about ages ago and that no one outside of our core audience cares about will suddenly get everyone...

She did. That and the Legends of Anglerre book that was the fantasy version of Starblazers Adventures. But yeah, no relation to Star Blazers at all.

If you had the Rights to do Whatever You Wanted with your Favorite Game?

I'd make a big push to make Mythras as newbie-friendly as D&D. The rulebook would be a full-colour treatment, rewritten to make things a lot easier to understand by newer gamers. Also, do a players-only book that just has the player-facing rules for character creation, skills, magic, etc. No GM...

New D&D actual play - Level Quest - first stream Nov 9th.

God, yes. I’ll always prefer a halfway decent written AP over the “best” video of a bunch of strangers playing a game. I’ve never managed to make it more than 15 minutes into any streaming video like that, and rarely even that far.
