Ah I misread the time stamp. You did indeed beat me to this.
Cross-posting my thoughts.
I have long cited Final Fantasy XIV' Eorzea as an excellent, underrated campaign setting. As a world, Eorzea (or Etherys as the planet is OFFICIALLY known) it has everything. Dungeons, scary monsters...
There is not, unfortunately. Online Platforms pretend that they have clear policies and procedures and rule of law but it's a lie. The rules for platforms like YouTube or Twitter/X whatever are all just Calvinball. The rules exist to provide post-hoc justifications for the executives to just...
The hard part with any Utopian society is creating conflict.
Gene Roddenberry really nailed it with Star Trek. The United Federation of Planets might be Utopian, but much of the conflict in Star Trek comes from contact with other societies that are very much *not* Utopias. How do you...
I think WotC may have realized that 3d VTTs really are an inferior product. Creating a 3d environment increases prep time by a factor of 10. A 2d VTT is faster, requires less prep, will run on a potato and doesn't remove the imagination part which is a big part of the appeal for TTRPGS.
I do genuinely want to know what the endgame is with this "Safety" in RPGs. At what point does this become "you are obligated to spoil every plot twist in the adventure or you are a bad person?"
Returning to a real world example, am I obligated to tell the players of my Cyberpunk game what my...
I think movies are salient to this discussion. Movies are the medium that most people are most familiar with and most often the style of storytelling that players seek to ape.
Disagreed that just "Horror" is sufficient warning. Horror movies can run the gamut from very safe fare to horribly...
This is just flat out wrong. Go back and watch the video. You can see him checking the monitors, looking at the other participants. He is looking for the other players to flash the X card or otherwise object and they don't. Adam was using the tool as it was advertised believing it would help...
One of the reasons my hackles tend to get up whenever the topic of sexual violence is brought up in these discussions is how often it is brought up in bad faith. Sexual violence is a highly emotional issue, which makes it very easy to wield as a cudgel to batter down dissent. "Oh you're...
Excellent replies. I would like to thank @Ladybird for giving me an honest answer. You have given me a lot of insight into why you think the way you do on this issue. Thought I still disagree I can understand your position. There's a real tendency when this discussion comes up online to...
I would like to pose an honest question to the X-Card advocates at this particular discussion.
In my many years as a forever DM, one of the most effective storytelling tools to drive player engagement is tragedy. If I can create NPCs who become beloved companions, familiar faces and friends...
It is sadly everywhere online. I read one particularly brain dead article putting Robert Eggers on blast for daring to make The Northman because "if your work doesn't piss off White Nationalists, you're a bad person."
I get the feeling that this article on Substack is very relevant to this discussion.
Quite often in discussions of what content is acceptable, we get sucked into this unspoken assumption that game devs and TTRPG gamers have to tailor their work to the worst players and DMs. It's a microcosm of...
I really think we need to leave this kind of thinking in the Satanic Panic and Jack Thompson. The idea that all fiction should be instructive or necessarily always will be instructive is just utterly toxic. Morally judging people for their tastes in/ reactions to fiction is wrong and...
At the danger of turning this into yet another dreaded Safety Tools thread, I am skeptical of most of them. The problem with safety tools is that they demonstrably do not work as advertised. It's just a poor substitute for having an honest conversation with your DM. It also smacks trying to...
I also miss Astral. I only go to tinker a little bit with it, but I loved being able to import PDF character sheets. Foundry can do something similar but that requires a form fileable sheet. IF there isn't one, creating one is doeable but it's tricky. It's easy to make a mistake and bork the...
