I've always loved the Black Company books. Those I had no problem following. Now, Gene Wolfe's Shadow of the Torturer...it took me three tries, but I kept going back because I enjoyed the writing so much. Finally, I started it again just to enjoy the writing and imagery and didn't worry about...
For the time, it was probably the most complex game out there. Given that this was around 1981 that was fairly unusual. (Far more skills than Runequest, and Rolemaster wasn't out yet.)
(This is all going off of archived memory...I haven't really looked at it in decades.) It also had an...
I've actually seen way less anger about this than I expected. At least in the forums I frequent, the general attitude has been cautious optimism, some indifference, some dislike of specifics...but very little hatred of the entire concept.

I love the setting and backed the Kickstarter. Maybe their implementation of the mechanics will work for me, but it's unlikely. I'll likely use a different set of mechanics. I backed it to support the setting.
Also 1st edition Deities & Demigods. I think this is a first printing...? (Update, second printing, apparently.) I bought it in the summer of 1981, I believe.
