Here’s a decent discussion of HP in D&D and why every blow does some actual damage in AD&D
That said I think the term “trivializing” can be appropriate when discussing mental health or even TBIs but to use it when discussing hit points is pushing sensationalism, at least in my opinion.
I would say higher attributes make quite a difference in AD&D which is why Gygax gives all the variations on rolling up characters, so you don’t end up with “marginal” one with a “short life expectancy “
I didn’t figure you did which is why I put the qualifier, Stay Frosty wears its heart on its sleeve and will either click with or repel the reader very quickly.
I would say some games are actually enhanced by not having a compassionate tone, Stay Frosty for example. To be fair I think what they are going to is obvious from the first page.
Agreed on a good freshly printed table copy as opposed to a vintage copy. The key of course is the quality of the PoD. For example in the case of say Palladium books minus the peeling covers a PoD will be hard pressed to be the equal of 30 year old books.
Is it? I am an atypical consumer in that case. I can’t remember the last new product I bought with resale value in mind. Interestingly enough I do think about resale value when I buy used products :trigger:
I have a number of them and always felt they were a little too thin rules wise but to be fair have never actually played or run one. I will make a point to remedy that so I can give the rules a fair shake.
In fact I consider B/X more playable than OSE as a stand alone product since B/X gives examples and OSE expects you to find play examples online.
Hard disagree on D&D rulesets, I think B/X is totally playable with just the core rules and I even have a combined softcover with both the Basic and Expert rules to make them one book.
Edit to add I agree with AD&D and later editions. RC may be playable from a single book but I much prefer the...
As much as I am a one and done kind of guy I am a big fan of the Slipgate Chokepoint supplement for Stay Frosty. That said I’m tempted to take the PDFs and put them together in one printed book, possibly even removing the adventures to slim it down.
They were debating the right play style from the beginning, go back and read the old Alarums and Excursions zine and you’ll see lots of the same arguments we have today.
The only game I run that really requires more than the main book to run is AD&D. There are a bunch of extra books for Cyberpunk 2020 but you don't need any to run the game. Same with the various Palladium games.
For full disclosure I am in a Pathfinder 1E Wrath of the Righteous game and we are...
That makes sense, yeah I'm happy with Boot Hill as my western. I don't need seperate "spaghetti western" and "Roy Rogers / Lone Ranger" RPGs. I can see the case for setting books, heck I own a bunch, but for the most part I prefer my setting books to be system neutral, like the Marvel Handbook...
