    Real Life and What's Happening...

The bacon refuses to cooperate with the symmetry of my meal. It shall be devoured first as a lesson to future bacon.

    Hidden gems

Dragged this one out of my memory: Hand Head Heart: Hobgoblin Don't think it ever got any real traction, and the author has other more highly rated items, but this one was just presented so tightly. Could even be that it was simply more a matter of impression than content for me...

NoDrift Horror in games. Is there a line?

As I think about it, the Tension system from Dead of Night is a built-in lines-and-veils mechanism. Player and GMs have the ability to manipulate the Tension score, which determines how scenes are described. I'll have to go back and look, but this means if you want more "aloof" or "light"...

Structure of your RPG Books (a Poll!)

To clarify, I feel that the time I spend looking up information during play, regardless of how well it's organized, Is time spent not playing. Obviously this is both a function of my capacity to hold information, as well as the amount of information that must be held ready for play.

Structure of your RPG Books (a Poll!)

I voted one and done. Page count is a huge consideration these days too. I want a play guide, not a reference manual.

    What are you watching?

HBO Max Ten minutes to go in the first episode of The Outsider and I feel like I've watched a complete season. This is how a show should be scripted and paced. Just like this. Acting is subdued and strong. Hope it holds up and keeps me engaged throughout the series.

    RPGs set in Utopias

Huh. I started one of these utopia settings as a book, but abandoned it after getting a quarter of the way through. It's pretty hard to write, and it's necessarily a one-shot (no replayability), but I had a gimmick that allowed otherwise. Someone posted earlier with a definition and a...

    What are you watching?

Hulu Attack the Block Took me awhile to get around to this. And then it took awhile to ramp up. But it's a solid sci-fi comedy. Also, this week's Futurama "All the Way Down" is fantastic. Makes me think it might get another award for the series. Might even be better than the season opener.

NoDrift Horror in games. Is there a line?

I only like it because it fits in my pocket and makes everyone think I'm happy to see them.

NoDrift Horror in games. Is there a line?

Hah! Curse my terrible memory. You're right. Looks like half the graph showed up in just prose. I couldn't say why the other half didn't make it in. I just contributed. Didn't ask for payment or responsibility. It was a hobby project. ... Huh. Younger me did pretty well. I might write a bit...

    What are you watching?

Netflix The Black Book It's the black John Wick with some John Grisham thrown in. I'll finish it, but the shots, editing, and stunts put it firmly in the position of an imitator. Solid background noise. I did quite enjoy the mixing of English and pidgin.

NoDrift Horror in games. Is there a line?

Probably relevance. It wasn't really the focus of the game to define horror.

NoDrift Horror in games. Is there a line?

When I wrote the Dead of Night system, I developed a two-axis system to define/categorize horror that was cut from the book. IIRC, one axis was comedy <> nihilism, and the other was physical (usually gore) <> psychological (usually madness). The scale was more about relative balance between the...

NoDrift Horror in games. Is there a line?

I offer myself as a single point of proof. Safety tools actively censor my behavior. They are an interruptive layer of filtering beyond what I naturally apply as general audience civility based on age and familiarity. Safety tools actively impair my creativity and constantly make me second...

NoDrift Horror in games. Is there a line?

It isn't that such a thing is impossible, but there are consequences. Like even in prison, there are some folks whose crimes are considered bad enough that other prisoners will go after them. Or you're well known as the idiot orc and no one deals with you. Or that you steadily collect enemies...

    What are you watching?

Netflix Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is probably my second favorite "light-hearted" anime. The first is still BOFURI (on Hulu). Anyway, for Zom, the characters are delightful, the plots quirky, and the animation is vibrant. There are a few gloomy parts, but given the theme, the show is...

NoDrift Horror in games. Is there a line?

Maybe not this thread, but the real world has situations in which you cannot operate as a GM on your own terms because of the presumption of iII intent. I had to pull a con event recently because the scenario had the potential to offend people. I wasn't forcing anyone to play, but the con...

    The Dank Memes

I don't mind if they're plain, as long as they were made with a mix-in to start with...bananas, bacon bits, applesauce, cinnamon, chocolate chips. In that case, they're just cookies masquerading as breakfast food and can be eaten any time, as finger food, without additional toppings. But a...
