I kinda get this. TBH, it’s one of my biggest stumbling blocks with running Starfinder. I can accept that magic can do some things in lieu of technology, but like technology, it’s not automatic. Magic can justify som things, but there still needs to be a self-consistent reason.
I'm weirdly two-natured about this.
On one hand, I have an irrational fear of buying something I won't be able to use because I got to busy with the sledgehammer to the designers' world, so I'm usually pretty conservative. When I do make changes, I often make them not immediately sensible to...
I backed this. I like Broken Compass (which is quite an accomplishment considering I loath most die-pool and spiffy-dice in systems), but haven't scrutinized the Outgunned stuff to see what is different.
One thing that didn't work for me in Broken Compass was the slender electronic support...
Day 21: Has being an RPG player ever helped you in an unexpected way outside of RPG play?
Mad Excel skills. For a while when decent fillable character sheets.and character generation tools were thin on the ground, I'd spin together little excel spreadsheets to track and tabulate characters. I'd...
20) How did you get into RPGs?
I as a 12 yo, was already a comics and science fiction fan (to the point of earning derisive nicknames from my classmates, but the success of Star Wars a few years prior kind of vindicated me). I wasn't really a fantasy fan (yet).
One of my hobbies at the time...
And I'm caught up!
19) Have you ever experienced bleed?
My first response to this was "what the hell is bleed?" And my first self-answer was something about dying rules.
After reading a few other responses, I'll answer not in any meaningful way. RPGs are a huge slice of my life, and I...
18) Most memorable Monster/Villain you've confronted in an RPG
I'm sure I could come up with a more nuanced and campaign-impacting villain if I thought about it, but the fact that this one comes to mind kinda makes it the most memorable. Presentation matters!
(This is the Clockwork Reliquary...
16) Do you collect RPGs by a certain designer?
I'm going to say no. There are certain names I give a high accord that makes it more likely I will buy one of their games, but I have to be interested in the game or property first. The name just allays my skepticism.
At one time I would buy most...
14) Favorite object one of your characters has owned
Obviously none was too important, as I can't remember any names, but our Traveller characters had a very nice (rules-breaking/house-ruled) little intelligence/scout ship.
15) Memorable relationship one of your characters had
I played a...
12) Have you designed a dungeon?
Many, though over my time running D&D, I veered away from designing "dungeons" that were essentially "improbably populated cave/tunnel systems" and more site-based encounter locations that were outgrowths of civilizations: forts, encampments, prisons, libraries...
That's kind of where I've settled. If it doesn't seem like I'll run an adventure as-is, I'll revert to "strip it for parts" mode. Maps, NPCs/monsters, cool plot details or locations mired in a mediocre adventure can live a new life as part of my adventure collective.
This applies on a larger...
10) Have you played a journaling game?
I have. Or should I say I tried. I backed Wait for Me on Kickstarter during the height of the pandemic and figured it might make for a nice diversion. Ultimately, I wasn't enjoying the process and after bailing out on multiple questions, I decided it...
8) Favorite RPG for its Art
Traveller 4th Edition. They got my right where they wanted me by using color plates by Chris Foss, who did much of the cool starship art in a wave of art books marketed to young Sci-Fi fans in the post-Star Wars world. Too bad I found the system (much like TNE before...
I often struggle with published adventures, and it takes a bit of courage for me to "color outside the lines" when running one. But that's in large part because if I am using a module, I am doing so to save time and I don't want to become a studied expert in the adventure; I want to run it and...
6) A Favorite RPG character you've played
That's a hard one to narrow down since before my days as a Forever GM I was living my powergamer arc. But as the question says "A" favorite not "The" favorite, I'll pick out Ruzz, my bugbear "Sage" con-artist for a Bookhounds of Waterdeep game run using...
4) First RPG you bought from its creator
During the early days when I actually met creators face-to-face, I was doing a lot of reviews so actually didn't buy a lot of products at that time, but math suggests it was possibly Spycraft or Spirit of the Century.
5) RPG you've played the most...
2/ Day till I catch up
Day 2: Favorite RPG Game World
Planescape has probably captured my imagination more than any gameworld, and I appreciate the depth of Mutants & Mastermind's Earth Prime, I think when it comes to actual settings I have gotten tons of use out of, it's Traveller's Third...
Aright, let's play:
1) Frist Store Where You Bought a TTRPG
Probably Waldenbooks with the Basic D&D boxed set, if one counts boxed sets which happens to include books.
Though beyond that, Waldenbooks was slim pickings for RPGers. My main haunt became a little spot in a strip mall called The...
Two answers here.
First, to the question as intended: Gumshoe. I get it, ideas like "never rolling to find a clue" and "expending stats to get bonuses" are stretches for some folks, but games like Night's Black Agents, Timewatch, and Swords of the Serpentine are really well done, enjoyable...
